About this project
Who remembers the 1991 game “D/Generation” by Robert Cook? For those who don’t, it was a popular arcade-adventure computer game published for the PC, Amiga and Atari ST by Mindscape in 1991. We at West Coast are remastering this brilliant game, to bring it back to the 21st century with a refreshing HD look and feel.
Plot: D/Generation centres on a courier who has been sent to deliver a package to a biological weapons company, Genoq. However, upon arrival it’s evident that the building’s security system has gone haywire, leaving deadly organic weapons called neogens wreaking havoc. Using brains and brawn, the player must navigate the courier through different interconnected maze-like rooms that contain many obstacles and challenges. The goal is to overcome the absorbing mix of puzzles and action in order to reach the head scientist, Derrida, on the 90th floor. He needs that package and you must get it to him, fast.
Not only do we have the support of the original maker, Robert Cook, but we also have John Jones-Steele (one of the game's original programmers) on board helping. As well as this, we have the original musician, Mark 'TDK' Knight, working on new music for the game. Together the old team are back, bringing with them more experience and a larger production team to create something special.
To date, we have worked to enhance D/Generation with all new HD graphics and sound. We’ve redesigned every element from the walls to the office decor and included new sound effects and music. What’s more, we’ve incorporated unlockable achievements and online leader boards to make the game more rewarding.
Our main goal has been to update this classic game and bring it forward to modern gamers. However, we’ve remained conscious that the original D/Generation has a large following and so we have listened intently to feedback with this project. As a result, we have kept the distinguishable features that made the game so popular in the 1990s, such as the quirky story-line, the isometric view and the grid based movements. Essentially, the gameplay itself has not been changed, but it's been enhanced considerably. Robert Cook himself has played an updated version of the game and commented: “This is tremendous. It feels like the same, fun game that I originally made, but with more scary opponents and fantastic graphics”.
The neogens perhaps exhibit the greatest makeovers as we have completely redesigned them to make them more frightening. We have the A/Gen who eats you alive, the B/Gen who crushes you from above, the C/Gen that can morph into any object before taking a life when you get close, and the dreaded D/Gen that causes unshakable hallucinations that render you powerless. In addition, we've redesigned the grenade-launching turret, turning it into a monstrous worm with great big teeth.
D/Generation HD is being developed for Xbox One, PS4, PC & Mac. If successful, we aim to develop the game for Wii U, PS3, PS Vita and Xbox 360.
Our pledged goal will ensure that we are able to finish this game to a high standard. We are nearly there, but we need to improve in many areas before release. We absolutely welcome any feedback that you have in regards to improvements. Please see below the gameplay to the newest version that we have developed so far.
We do have further visions for this game, which will be included in our stretch goals. When D/Generation HD is complete, we would love to create a 3D version where you play from a first-person perspective. Whilst we have dabbled with the idea and developed a very basic model, we need sufficient support to make this happen.
The Original D/Generation (1991):
D/Generation was very successful and received a high amount of praise in the 1990s. In fact, Amiga Power ranked D/Generation the 40th best game of all time in 1996. We encourage you to watch the original gameplay in order to grasp just how we have revitalised the game for a new generation.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our project. We really do hope you back us. We have a range of incentives starting from our eternal gratitude, to a 3D scan of yourself to be placed in the game as a character. Please check out our "rewards" page for further details.

Risks and challenges
With the original D/Generation being so successful (it was voted one of the top games of its time for five years), we are faced with the challenge of making it stand the test of time. We are confident in our ability to enhance the game whilst maintaining the exciting features that made it so popular in the 90s and we are confident in our ability to bring this classic game up-to-date with modern platforms for new audiences in 2015/2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
