We are musical children of the Grateful Dead: this means we are fans of a formidable book of original songs, devotees of collective improvisation, and strong believers in the power and magic of live performance. We compose our own music, we interpret songs from a great variety of musical sources, and we allow our performances to construct themselves to the greatest extent possible. We believe in the art of musical conversation, and we conduct that discourse in our own voices as opposed to mimicking the styles and sounds of others.
Fragile Thunder is a collaboration among musical friends who share a love for this great and eclectic American musical form. Stephen played on Anela's album Harpin' on the Dead; David sang harmony and played on the bonus tracks of Cut the Dead Some Slack. We have performed in various pairings in recent years, and we got together in April 2018 at Oakland's Megasonic Sound (with the great Robin Sylvester, formerly of Bob Weir and Ratdog, on bass) to deliver a new and unique acoustic take on the music of the Dead.
We are profoundly pleased with the results! Two very long, exploratory versions of "Dark Star," a 14-minute "St Stephen" with two nice jams, and David's delightful "Jacqueline."
This Kickstarter project is for the purpose of getting the record mastered, packaged, and pressed, and to get the word out about it in the world. We plan to release it in April of 20019, with a performance at the Skull & Roses Festival in Ventura CA (and, if all goes well, a western tour immediately after that).
We'll have a cover painting/poster by William Giese, who did the cover for Anela's Harpin' on the Dead album.
We thank you for your kind attention, and we hope you'll contribute!

Risks and challenges
The music has been recorded and mixed. David has released more than 15 records on his PERFECTIBLE RECORDINGS label, and we have all completed crowdfunded projects in the recent past. We are confident we can deliver this project in full and on time!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
