About

The most damnable of creatures from the 6th Plane of Existence (also known as The Spirit Plane) were somehow manifesting in the hologram called Earth. By the year 2030 these evil spirits had gained complete control and began a tyrannical take-over of the planet. It was met with a formidable resistance called The Core. The Core fought heroically for 10 years against the Federal Police Force drones and eventually dethroned the warmonger puppet masters called “Field Marshals”... but the Tyranny continued. Desperate and motivated, The Core went unconventional. They found anomalies in the hologram and by reverse engineering revealed a portal to the 6th Plane... the real war was about to begin. But Evil was prepared. They setup a defense, a morphing maze connected by portals and filled with the darkest spiritual abominations. In the Multiverse it is called an impenetrable defense, soul crushing mayhem and Evils greatest construct. But to the Heroes who fight there for our very existence, it is known as... The HECTICON.

WHAT IS THE HECTICON?

The HECTICON is Portal Defense, Capture the Portal and Exterminate 'Em All. Like Chess, The Hecticon is extremely easy to play. The Mechanics were purposely kept very, very simple. There are basic movement and attack rules but the challenge and fun comes in the strategy and reacting to the all-out-mayhem going on around you. Just imagine the pressure flow as the 30 baddies begin to close down on you as you try to protect the center portal, then all of the sudden a new portal appears and the whole flow viscously  switches towards that portal.
Like Portal Defence games, your Heroes portal-in at the centre of the HECTICON and they need to defend that portal from the onslaught of 30+ of Evils finest. If one of the Board Runners reaches the centre, game over. You must reset and try again.
Like Capture the Portal (after the first two rounds) at the end of a round a portal can open behind one of the tiles around the HECTICON. Now it's a race to capture that portal. If one of your Heroes makes it to the portal first your entire party goes to the next level. If not, game over. Reset and try again.
And just like any Exterminate 'Em All game The HECTICON delivers but in an insane way.

THE HECTICON GAME BOARD
The HECTICON board makes your experience even more unpredictable and exciting. It holds countless configurations because each tile around The HECTICON holds a built-in blocker in a different position, making each tile unique. Plus, your party can lay down 1 more blocker per tile before starting each level. Board Runners have to go around blockers so blockers slow them down. Each blocker has a directional arrow to show which way the Board Runner has to go around. Your Heroes have to go around the blockers as well but you can choose which way.
After completing a level, the tile side that the portal appeared behind is "dead" and cannot be used again. You must take the tile or tiles on the dead side of the HECTICON and stack it/them above another "live" tile side. How you stack them is up to you and can play a major role in your success of reaching the boss.

LEVELS
Each Boss has it's own Board Runners for levels (1-6) and elite Board Runners for the Boss levels.
Your party must battle the bosses in order: Skrib, Rottam, Sirok, Rokassa and Goros.

MOVEMENT AND RANGE
Board Runners
Screechers can move 4 spaces per turn. Their attack range is 1 space which means they have to be right next to you.

Haters can move 3 spaces and their attack range is 3 spaces.

Red Bulls can move 2 spaces and their attack range is 4 spaces.

Board Runners will run right through Heroes if one is standing in their way. If a board runner runs through you you take 1 damage and if they are still in range after they move you get attacked as well. Stay out of their path.
The only difference in movement between Board Runners and Boss Level Board Runners is Boss Level Board Runners are coming after you, not a portal. Boss Level Board Runners will attack the closest hero.

Mini Bosses
Mini-Bosses can move 4 spaces and their attack range is 5 spaces. The only difference between Mini-Bosses and Boss-Level Mini-Bosses is Boss Level Mini-Bosses are coming for you and they go after the closest Hero.

Bosses
Bosses do not move. They stay in the centre protecting the portal beneath them. The whole board is in their attack range.

Heroes
Heroes can move 3 spaces per turn and attack twice. Their range is 4 spaces but they have the ability to increase range permanently and temporarily through +chips on their player card and effect cards. Heroes always move first then attack. The hero does have to move if they don't want to.
Heroes can shoot and move across the sides of the square tiles. So if your Hero is on one side and a Board Runner is in range across the other side you can hit him. None of your enemies can move across or shoot across the sides of tiles.

ATTACKING
Board Runners
Any Board Runners main goal is to reach a portal. They always move first, then attack. So you can be in range before they move be but out of range after and therefore not be attacked.

Mini-Bosses
Mini-Bosses attack the same way as Board Runners.

Bosses
Bosses attack using a Rage Combat System. Each Boss has 5 levels of attacks and 6 attacks options per level. Each level the attacks are stronger. The attacks consist of single target, multi-target and area effect damage. The Boss's first attack is one of the six in level 1. Next is one of the six in level 2. Next is one of the six in level 3. Next is one of the six in level 4. Next is one of the six in level 5. After the Boss makes it through levels 1-5 they start over but they drop level 1. After they go through levels 2-5 the Boss starts over but they drop level 2. After the Boss goes through levels 3-5 they start over but they drop level 3. After the Boss goes through levels 4-5 they start over but they drop level 4. At that point the Boss is in Rage Mode and only using it's most powerful level 5 attacks.

Heroes
Heroes can attack twice in one turn. Heroes attack by playing an Effect Card first. Then they can add their attack power damage to the Effect Card Damage (if it's an immediate damage card) or they can add it to the upcoming weapon damage. Weapon damage depends on the weapon and what range they are at, plus Heroes have a crit roll (19 or 20 on a D20). Heroes can boost their crit chance by getting +1 Crit chips for their player card.

CARDS
Deck Building Cards
Each Hero has a different class. Each class has a starting deck of Effect Cards. Some cards are unique to the class and others shared. Heroes can collect more cards by defeating Mini-Bosses, Bosses, Mini-Challenges, the Blood Moon Missions and obtaining treasure cards.

Board Runner Cards
Each Boss has it's own Screechers, Haters, Red Bulls and Mini-Bosses. So when you are going after a certain Boss use the Board Runner stats attributed to that Boss. They are clearly marked on the Board Runner cards. For the actual Boss fight there are different Screechers, Haters, Red Bulls and their stats are on the main Board Runner cards as well.

Mini-Boss Cards
Mini-Boss stats are charted all on the main Mini-Boss card

Boss Cards
Each Boss has it's own card

Board Runner Effect Cards
When it's the Board Runners turn to move you must play a Board Runner Effect Card. This card will tell you whether the Board Runners get a special effect for that turn only. Do not pull a card for each individual Board Runner, the effect is applied to all Board Runners for that turn only. These cards can make the Board Runners use one of their movement spaces to move one space left or right first, increase their damage, increase the number of spaces they can move or a host of other special effects.

Treasure Cards
These cards drop drop off Mini-Bosses and Bosses. They hold a vast amount of treasures like weapons, +chips and Hero deck building cards. Treasure cards can also be found in Mini-Challenges and the Blood Moon Missions XPAC.

Weapon Cards
Every Hero has a dedicated weapon card. You can obtain weapon cards by defeating bosses, completing mini-challenges, completing the Blood Moon Missions XPAC and through treasure cards.

+Chips
These chips are added to the slots on your hero interface. They boost just about everything and add levels of customization for players to add their flare of play. You can acquire +chips through treasure cads, Mini-Bosses, Bosses, mini-challenges and The Blood Moon Missions XPAC.

Selecting Board Runners For Each Tile
Simply toss the Board Runner Tokens in the bag and shake it up. Blindly pull 5 tokens out of the bag for each tile and place the baddies at the back of the tile. Then replace the tokens with the corresponding miniatures.

Here are some more game play details.

A Note From the Game Designer
Hey it's Desmond, thanks for visiting our Kickstarter.
Wow what a journey to get here. When we originally sat down to discuss our flagship board game it was decided our main keyword would be "fun". Any design element was judged ultimately on whether it made the game experience entertaining. We started off with a single player assassin game but realized about two months in that we weren't passionate about making a fun assassin game. But we loved the main hero so we kept her. We then completely shifted tracks and direction by moving to an Epic RPG. It was so intriguing to develop that game. We spent three months sculpting that but stopped abruptly because this is what we learned. In epic board games there are huge behemoths like theme, storyline, mechanics, fighting system, etc. Sometimes elements like the fighting system (for example) just over-power everything else and all other elements had to fight to be noticed. Players can feel the grind of those elements especially over-time and if it's not done well, over-all it's not a good experience. As we then turned back and looked at all the games we played in the past with this perspective, we saw game designers in a whole different way. We scrapped the Epic RPG because although it was looking like a great game, it wasn't the platform for what we were looking to create. But the theme ended up being the setup story for The HECTICON. Doug, our Head of Game Testing, is a big Rahdo Runs through fan and he asked me to look at few reviews. Doug thought Rahdo, whether it was conscious or not, was trying to push the board game industry forward. I watched the two reviews and I did feel there was a tremendous energy behind the reviews that wanted to push designers and I agreed with that energy.

So here we were, 5-6 months in and we had a philosophy developed but didn't have a platform in which to build on. I had a feeling we were close and we just needed to keep pushing on. As I was researching game play I kept seeing a common element, the hexagon.  Common not only in board design but in graphic design as well.  I research at a very fast pace so the hexagon must of entered my subconscious, so much so, one day I opened Illustrator and created a hexagon. I stared at it for about 30 seconds, then added 6 square tiles to each side. Immediately after adding the last square  I saw baddies all around the backs of each square and 4 heroes in the middle. The first thing I thought was "Wow, this is hectic. Welcome to the Hecticon". Then I started moving squares on top of others and my mind exploded. That's how The Hecticon was born. I sat down and designed the board. I don't think I've ever had so much fun designing anything. I wanted to print the board and mock it up. When I picked up the print at the printer there were a few staff members looking at it. One asked, "What is this?". When I told them it was a board for a board game they got really engaged and couldn't stop asking questions. I knew we were on to something.

We are in the final tweaking stages of the board mechanics right now as well as initial game play testing. Even with army men and post-it notes this game is so much fun we rarely sit down.
We still have content and a lot of art to complete and that's one of the reasons why were here on KS. But we are also looking for your feedback on the game. To me, there is no better audience then you to garner comments from. I know we will get amazing observations that will improve this game immensely.

We are no kickstarter experts by any means. We looked at what other KS board games have done and we tried to give you a real good feel of the game and enough detail to help you pledge to support it.

Thank you so much for your time.
Desmond.

Risks and challenges

We are partnering with Panda Game Manufacturing for the manufacturing of the game and we are using one of their preferred shipping partners so we have immense confidence that the game will be completed and shipped. The miniature phase of the manufacturing does posses some approvals that have built in variance in terms of timing. This phase may add up to 4-6 weeks to the delivery date but because the mini's are so integral to the game experience we strongly believe any time that needs to be added to the miniature phase is well worth it.
Plus, of course with shipping there are circumstances that arise that are out of our control but we will make you aware of any issues with the timing of shipping.
