About

What we want to do is offer affordable film processing to everyone. Most classic camera stores and photo-processing kiosks are out of business. Big box stores aren’t processing anymore either. Many of those that remain are expensive, which limits the amount of film developing people can do.  We want to change that.

DEXTER’S HISTORY:

Dexter’s Camera opened in Downtown Ventura in 1960. It was the first place in town to purchase cameras, film and offer film developing. Throughout the years, and with the introduction of digital cameras, business took a turn and the shop nearly closed about a year and a half ago. We used to try to carry as many digital cameras and accessories as we could, but the mark up on it is 3% (not including the 2% credit card cost). This meant stock going out, but not much money coming in. It was not looking good.

Being that the store had been in business for 54 years, we were sad.  We didn’t want to be the reason it failed after all this time. We loved our jobs, so that’s when we decided to change the store into what we had always secretly wanted:  We wanted a place that reflected who we are and what we liked. We would talk about it, but we were afraid that our old customers preferred the lousy dingy pegboard, lack of color and style, iced with years and years of dust and dirt. Yes it had a quirky charm, but working in it, we hated it.

THE TRANSFORMATION:

We took a leap of faith and began cleaning and remodeling.  We organized half a centuries worth of camera odds and ends into around fifty big bins.  We fixed the flickering lights and patched the leaky roof.  We cleaned the place from top to bottom, scraping decades of grime and dirt off the walls and floor. It’s amazing what difference paint can make. And as we moved forward, we noticed the amount of support we got from the photography community. So many people came to help organize, clean, and work for free. Work for free!

During the remodel, we had help from at least twenty different people. When we moved our location, we had fifteen people show up, FIFTEEN!  And that was just some of the people that have helped - there are so many.  The response we got, and have had ever since, can’t really be put into words. The amount of love and gratitude we have for everyone is immeasurable. These people are family; family are the only ones who will come and help work for free.  That’s love, and it’s the best. The awesome part is, all our efforts worked.  We’ve always cared about Dexter’s Camera, but fixing up the store showed everyone that we REALLY did. This Kickstarter is for our Dexter’s family and our family of film photographers.

 WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:

We have a plan, but we need you. We have one processing machine and we have the space, but we require a little extra cash to get our darkroom up and running.  We need your help to raise enough money to:

- Purchase the chemicals to make the machine work

- Pay the company (Noritsu) to show us how to work it

- Get a proper film scanner

- Buy a printer to make 4x6’s in house

- Buy processing envelops, negative sleeves, etc. for packaging

BUDGET:

75% will go toward our film-processing project.

25% will go toward fulfilling our Rewards  (etc).

TIMELINE:

As soon as our processing machines are up and fully functioning, we will get started on fulfilling Rewards to every person that donated. Updates will be posted regularly.

IF WE SURPASS OUR GOAL:

We have many things we’d like to offer. We’d like to teach more pinhole camera classes at K-8 schools. We’d like to be able to afford the space directly next to our shop to expand our darkroom.  We are currently working on a negatively charged sensor cleaner vacuum. We need better sewing equipment for our made-in-house camera straps and money to go directly toward the Dexter’s Brand.

Running and working in a camera store isn’t going to make any of us rich, but inspiring people to artistically express themselves and give them that freedom doesn’t have a dollar value.  Dexter’s isn’t really a camera store, it’s an idea:  The idea of good nature, love, teaching, helping, and having fun.  That’s what life is about.

UPDATE:

our Analog or bust promo trip to San Francisco was a so much fun. It reminded me why I love film so much. Its the process and it really brings people together. The trip also reminded me how awesome our crew here at Dexter's is. here are some shots from our trip Ill have them all up on the website soon. www.dexterscamera.com Thanks for everyones support so far. Please spread the word and help us reach our goal. Thanks to our trip sponsors CineStill Film, Ace Rivington and House Beer.

Risks and challenges

We realize the risk, but it’s worth the challenge. If we don’t make our goal, we will continue to put efforts into trying to find the money to go through with the project. We are dedicated to making this happen!
