Show me your Colours! Devon Sproule and her Austin / Toronto crew are making a new record.
It's pronounced SPROULE …like rock 'n ROLL
My name is Devon Sproule. I live in Austin, Texas. I wouldn't live in Austin if I hadn't lived at an eco-village in Virginia. And I wouldn't have lived at an eco-village if I hadn't been born to some hippies in Canada. And without being born to those hippies, and without the support of people like you, I doubt I'd have ever been brave enough to become a professional musician. So thank you! May I tell you about my new project?
THE LIGHTHOUSE WORKS
In November, I was granted a writing fellowship with a program called The Lighthouse Works. I got to go to a tiny island and write a bunch of songs. Writing songs is nothing new -- that's what I do! -- but because I was on a tiny island, and because I didn't have to pretend I knew how to cook, I wrote songs waaaaay faster than usual. And now I'm making them into a record.
The working title of the record is Colours. It was co-written with the fantastically talented Mike O'Neill, who I met remotely when he contributed to a project of mine called Low-Key Karaoke. Mike has a moustache and lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and we're meeting in Ontario (where we were both born) to record it.
WHY KICKSTARTER, DEVON?
I'm using Kickstarter because it's a two-in-one: it allows folks to pre-order the record, which enables me to finance it without loading up my credit cards. But it also lets people know about the album, how it's progressing, etc., which helps to build momentum for its release. It's been a long time since I've done something as community oriented and open as this, and I'm really, really excited.
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
In my decade+ doing this, I've learned that nothing is guaranteed in the music business. Most of us do it because we love it, not because we expect to make a bucketful. This is especially true of making records. I've worked to set reasonable goals for this project, and I plan to meet those goals. Most importantly, I plan to maintain good communication with collaborators and backers as the project unfolds -- not just to build momentum and enthusiasm, but also to maintain confidence and accountability.
The Kickstarter kicker: if I don't meet my goal, I get nothin'. But I think I can do it! I think WE can do it!
Thanks especially to Raina and Drew for their help and advice with Kickstarter, and to Paul for making the video. Oh, and thanks to Windmill Bicycles for the sweet ride on that sick 'cycle!
