2017 Q3 Anniversary Update
Wow that last year just zipped right by. A lot has happened over the last year and we still have quite a bit to go but we're definitely in a better situation now than even before.
For the sake of transparency and to briefly summarize the year, while we hit our Kickstarter goal last year, the funding itself wasn't enough to hire anyone full time or really even part time for that matter. That means the team continues to operate on a volunteer basis and the funds went to cover things such as pre-production, equipment & licensing and paying for things that we just couldn't do ourselves.
Being on volunteer hours means the crew is only able to show up once a week on Saturdays which translates to about 40-45 full work days since the campaign ended, so things have been slower than originally anticipated.
With regards to story and script, the script itself is in our 13th or 14th draft but this time around it's a complete overhaul in order to better fit the project scope and our current production capabilities.
On the technical side of things, we finally managed to get a model rigged up to work with the tech we got from Faceware Technologies. This is a huge step forward as the new facial motion capture will definitely improve the quality of animation as well as speed up production. However, as the one year license given to us from Faceware Technologies just expired, we're currently looking at other sources of funding to purchase a license for the software package(most likely will be my credit card).
Unless we somehow land some additional funding to bring in people on a full or part time basis, my estimate for the delivery of the first episode based on the current production speed will most likely be in Q2/Q3 of 2018. However I don't want you to think that we came to the one year anniversary mark empty handed.
To celebrate our one year anniversary we've put together an updated version of our Kickstarter trailer to better show how much progress we've made over to last year and what the final product will be like.
For the most part, the character animations are the exact same that we used a year ago except with some new dynamic systems turned on. All our new animations have improved significantly since then as our new mocap system is better by an order of magnitude. Needless to say, this was the video we should have had for our Kickstarter campaign to begin with.
What I thought was our official Trademark registration a few months ago turned out to be an interim step to see if there was objections to the Trademark. Now that the wait period is over, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office has allowed us to officially register the Abyssian Knights name/logo as an official Trademark for 15 years!!
This doesn't mean much but it is sign of our commitment to make Abyssian Knights a long term IP.
We just submitted everything for review for backerkit and it should be live in a few days. Surveys should be mailed out shortly after the folks at Backerkit give us the ok. Hoping to get some of the rewards fulfilled to free up some more time for production.
For all those who missed out on the opportunity to support the project, our slacker backer system is now live! Rather than implement our own system via paypal, we've decided to go with Indiegogo's Indemand platform instead.
Art & Music Update
After dealing with a handful of character modellers who just didn't quite hit the mark for the look I was looking for, I began talking to some art houses including some that have contributed to many well known film and game projects. It appears that our requirements were beyond what many were comfortable doing and were either unwilling to do it or would just be a bit too costly. So we're now back at looking to get models done in house again.
In terms of music and casting, since we're going through a script overhaul, all talks about music and casting have been pushed until the new year when we have the script locked or close to it.
Health and wellness
As some of you already know, my health took a bit of a nose dive earlier this year. After another trip to the ER not too long ago, my mobility is rather limited right now and I'm now waiting for yet another specialist to see me. Hopefully someone can figure out what's actually wrong with me so I can walk normally again.
As getting to and from the studio is a bit more of a challenge these days, I've taken home one of my workstations so I can work from home during the week. I still show up to the studio every Saturday morning as that's when the team shows up but thankfully I've managed to arrange to get a ride so the trip isn't quite as treacherous.
Speaking of the studio. Many thanks go out to Silvio from Trixter Canada for getting me one of those adjustable desk things for my desk at the studio. It makes the a world of a difference and is honestly one of those things I never even knew I needed!
I know there were are couple of requests for the cosplay kits and I was hoping to get these polished up a bit more but they're ok for now. I don't want to delay these any longer. Hopefully it'll help some of you put together some awesome cosplay because we would love to see them!
That's it for now!
On behalf of everyone here on the Abyssian Knights project, I just wanted to say thank you all once again for your support, we couldn't have gotten this far without you.
