About this project

The first officially licensed Wet Hot American Summer game!

Put on your cut-off shorts, wail on your acoustic guitar, and make sure you've got your 20-sided die. We turned the cult classic film Wet Hot American Summer into an old school pen-and-paper roleplaying game, so you can have your own steamy and insane Camp Firewood adventures.

TIP: Before you start playing, you might want to go into town for some...

Wet Hot American Summer: Fantasy Camp lets you play as a camper, counselor or staffer at Camp Firewood. You can pick a favorite character like Beth, Coop or Gene, or a new character you design. Every game takes place over one magical day at camp, where you might become a hero, get some action, or end up at a secret pizza party! (Uh-oh.)

Fantasy Camp is designed to be easy-to-play with less math than traditional RPGs and more emphasis on storytelling and party game craziness. Psycho fans (like us) will rejoice in never-before-seen material from Wet Hot American Summer cast members Joe Lo Truglio (Neil), Marguerite Moreau (Katie), Michael Ian Black (McKinley) and co-writer / director David Wain.

Fantasy Camp is “The Ultimate” game. It’ll cast a level 5 charm spell over you, Alexa.

Whenever we make a stretch goal, the can fills up a bit and a new stretch goal is revealed. This is a war we *can* win, campers!

$15,000 – Get McKinley Played – We’ll double the number of pre-made characters in the Fantasy Camp manual from 15 to 30! While the manual includes Firewood All-Stars like Coop, Katie, Beth and Gene, we’ll make sure beloved campers like McKinley, Lindsay, and Can of Mixed Vegetables don’t get left out in the cold.

The Devastator is the only all-humor press in America. Wet Hot American Summer is pretty much every Devastator author's favorite movie. We remember seeing the film in its original run in New York, going to midnight screenings, and quoting the film to our confused "normal" friends. We have this hanging on our office wall...

As a publisher, we've quested into the gaming realm before (cough cough nerds), like with the weird and funny Wizards of Cockblock Forest role-playing game by Geoffrey Golden. One of our authors, Lee Keeler, a veteran producer of live comedy shows in LA, had the idea to make a Wet Hot American Summer RPG and reached out to David Wain. Several weeks later, to all of our surprise, we actually got permission to make it.

We spent many months designing the game we wanted to play as fans, and a manual that felt like it was part of the Wet Hot universe we love so much. So, how does this story end? Hopefully, with an amazing game in your hands, ready to play with friends!

Why is this roleplaying game different from all other roleplaying games? (Besides all the playable characters being Jewish...)

  • Play as Wet Hot Heroes: The manual includes so many playable characters, like lovelorn Coop, top dog Beth, or a surprisingly nimble Can of Vegetables.
  • Create Your Own Custom Character: Whip together a character in minutes with our simple character sheet template. Choose your rank – camper, counselor, or camp staff – their personality, and their special powers. Even the lamest campers have special powers!
  • Explore Camp Firewood: Take the jet ski for a spin. Dominate the Capture the Flag field. Score big in the sports equipment shed. Firewood is yours for the camping!
  • Design Your Own Camp: Take your game higher and higher by designing your own custom camp. Wanna liberate an oppressive fat camp or go astro-nuts at space camp? The possibilities are endless.
  • Activities Galore: Do long RPG sessions give you MCB (Moist Chair Butt)? Fantasy Camp integrates activities as varied as singing, dancing, scavenger hunts, walking outside (gasp!), and arts & crafts – okay, arts & farts & crafts – to create a more immersive camp experience, and because it’s funny.
  • Collect Firewood Treasures: Wanna sneak a peak at Andy's gernal? Looking for a sweatband to help your New Way training? Need some lube… for your pussy? Camp Firewood has tons of items to discover that will assist your character.
  • Roll the Dice of Fate: When your character gets in a major jam, they’ll roll the Dice of Fate. They may discover bug juice with regenerative powers… or fall off a cliff and get struck by lightning. Whatever happens, you cannot sue the camp.
  • Evolve Your Camper: You can play your characters for one ridiculous game and throw ‘em out, or play multiple games with the same characters for a bigger story. The more games you play as your character, the more your character evolves and changes – like Pokemon who get sexier.
  • Wet Hot Bonus Content: The book includes a foreword by David Wain and game tip interviews with cast members on how to kick butt playing as their characters.

Fantasy Camp combines the unlimited imagination of classic pen-and-paper RPGs with absurd challenges themed around camp activities. You don’t have to be a crowned class B Dungeon Master to play Fantasy Camp. Here are highlights from a recent play test...

Your Camp Director tells the story of one insane day at camp. Lives will be saved. Treasures will be discovered. Fridges will be humped. If you want to win, you must survive the day and achieve your Big Camp Dream, so you can level up next summer!

Geoffrey Golden is the co-designer of Fantasy Camp. There are two parts to the Fantasy Camp manual. They come together like penis and vagina.

Part I: The Rulebook

Learn the basics of playing the game, creating a character sheet, and designing your own camp. This part was written by The Indoor Kids in 1981, the night after they saved the camp from a renegade piece of Skylab. (How would you possibly go to bed after that?)

Players

  • Quick Play – Explains how to get started fast, so you’re not spending too much time nerding around.
  • Character Sheets – How do you fill out a character sheet? This step-by-step guide takes you through the process quickly, like a rafting trip on Devil’s Canyon Rapids.

Camp Directors

  • Rules – Who goes first? How do turns work? Will my characters be attacked by bees? These are the basics for Camp Directors. (“It was in 1908 that the first American summer camps were founded in the Catskills…”)
  • Designing a Camp – For a summer camp experience like no other, design your own camp! You begin with your camp’s theme, then go to town with maps, mystery items, a schedule of activities to delight and/or torture your friends, and a big event to cap off your day.
  • Typical Gameplay – We give you a 1-page snapshot of how the game is played, so you’re mentally prepared to direct your camp like a champ.
  • Camp Checklist – A handy checklist of supplies you’ll need for a successful day of camp. Don’t forget the snacks! The snacks are the most important part!
  • Blank Character Sheet – Use our handy template to make your own campers, counselors, and weirdos. Er, camp staffers.
  • Blank Schedule Template – Keep track of where you assigned your players to be, so you can bust them when they ditch their activities for a make-out sesh.
  • List of Special Moves – Your character’s Rad Traits give them special abilities, like being cut from marble or fondling sweaters. What powers will your campers have?

Part II: Last Day of Camp Module

We’re bundling in the "Last Day of Camp" adventure so you can easily set-up a game at Camp Firewood and play as your favorite Wet Hotties. The module includes three customizable story-paths: Save the Camp, Superstardom, and Bonfire Boinking.

  • Camp Theme – An introduction to Camp Firewood and its staff of caring, attentive counselors who just wanna get laid 'n' paid
  • Morning Announcement – Kick the day off right with a little intro from Artie Solomon, alias “The Beekeeper,” to set-up the evening’s big conclusion. “Seize the day, Camp Firewood, because it’s your last.”
  • Map – This handy top down map of Camp Firewood gives you the lay of the land, and where to get laid in the land. High five!
  • Locations – We break down each location on the map, including what characters, items and surprises players will find in all of Camp Firewood’s nooks and crannies. Especially the crannies.
  • Items – Hoard these items to give your character bonuses and extra abilities. Beware: Some of these items are contraband, like nudie mags, beer and funny cigarettes, which will get you busted with Beth.
  • Activities – What do you want to do on your last day of camp? Audition for Susie and Ben’s big talent show? Take an intense science workshop with Associate Professor Newman? Escape from Coop’s climactic softball game? Your Camp Director has a big day planned for you!
  • Tasks – Counselors and Camp Staff have chores to do, like showing campers inappropriate movies on the Betamax, finding contraband in kids’ bunks (and getting bribed to turn a blind eye), and best of all, cleaning up goat shit. However, the real adventure may begin when you ditch these lame tasks…
  • Big Conclusions – A crazy event will cap off your last day at camp, like a hot and steamy bonfire, a plague of mutant locusts, or a talent show with a Broadway talent scout in the crowd!
  • Pre-Made Characters – Coop, Katie, Andy, Beth, Gene, and Keith are playable characters, along with many more. But the more we fundraise, the more characters we’ll add to the manual.

Here are the goodies you'll get in your care package when you go to Fantasy Camp. Every tier gets previous tier rewards. For example, if you get the print book, you'll also get the digital book and postcard.

Note: Dick cream doesn't ship internationally. That's why the dicks are so dry in Spain!

Here's how the budget breaks down. For more on roleplaying game budgets, visit the Roleplaying Game Budgets section of your local library.

  • Talent – It takes many creative, neurotic people to make a roleplaying game, like the game designers, illustrators, layout artists, editors, and more, plus the creators of the original film.
  • Printing – We’re killing trees to create a game where you pretend to play in nature!
  • Marketing – If a roleplaying game is released on Kickstarter and nobody knows, is it ever played?
  • Kickstarter – There are fees, taxes, rewards, production equipment, packing materials, and incidental expenses of fulfilling pledges.

Risks and challenges

The Devastator is an OG when it comes to Kickstarter – our first campaign was in 2010! We’ve also helped out behind the scenes on other campaigns.

Because we produce 12 comedy titles per year on very tight deadlines independently, we have exhaustive experience in getting high quality goof books and games to readers on time and as promised.

The manual is written and the game has been tested extensively – Fantasy Camp is now in layout. Once the campaign ends, we will make final adjustments and additions to the game manual and module according the stretch goal we achieve. Then it goes to print!

The biggest challenge we anticipate is shipping volume, and for that reason we have a fulfillment company in mind if this gets too big to fulfill from our humble Devastator HQ. Other than that, we’re just stoked to get this game finished and in your hands this November (or earlier, if you choose the early release reward). Have a nice summer!
