Hello! My name's Devadas. I am a singer, a composer, a writer and a producer from Brooklyn, New York. Over the years, I've recorded and collaborated on a crazy array of diverse projects, but I am best known as a singer of kirtan, a type of traditional spiritual music that is native to India.
Over the past several months, I've been wrapping up production on my newest recording, the Grand Street Kirtan Sessions. This is an album containing almost six hours of live temple-style kirtan. That's not a typo. We really recorded almost six hours of live kirtan, just the way we do it when we offer it in temples, studios and homes.
Here's a sneak peek.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, kirtan is a spiritual practice, a type of call and response group singing where the words we’re singing together are considered to be Divine Names… Names that invoke the divinity and inherent happiness that exists within each of us. This is music that draws us into our own hearts.
I learned this practice in the presence of my teacher decades ago, and have been leading kirtans all over the world for many years. It’s a practice that I love to share with people. It’s intimate. It’s profound. It’s healing. It’s ecstatic. It’s fun. And in my travels it’s brought a wealth of experiences and friendships beyond my wildest imaginations.
The intent of The Grand Street Kirtan Sessions was to capture this: that feeling of the live kirtan experience, of sitting in a room in satsang, just singing back and forth with people.
To do this, I brought together a number of great friends, people who I’ve been chanting with, traveling with, recording with, staying up late with, sharing life with over the past several years, and we camped out together in a recording studio on Grand Street in Brooklyn for a couple days last spring, and we sang. Nothing was rehearsed or even planned. And the end result was, we recorded almost six hours of live chanting together.
That’s the story.
I am excited for you to hear these recordings and for the world to hear these recordings. It's really a massive project, a labor of love, and I think you're really going to love it.
Thank you so much for your support, and please share this if you'd like your friends to know about it.
