Because this is a truly independent documentary (not funded by a studio or network), we have been responsible for raising all the money we need to complete the film.
Now, we are releasing it ourselves. There are tremendous costs to releasing a film, which are usually absorbed by the film's distributor. Because we are self-releasing BURN, those costs are ours: Booking, theater rental, marketing, advertising, outreach … Distributors spend millions of dollars releasing films as small as ours. But, because we have such a strong network of fans, we can do it with less. It's simple: The more we raise, the more cities we'll be able to get to.
BURN is an action-packed documentary, told through the eyes of Detroit firefighters, men and women who are charged with the thankless task of saving a city that many have written off. Faced with the highest arson rate in the country, and a lack of resources that leaves them ill-equipped for the job, Detroit firefighters risk injury, disablement, illness, death on each and every shift. But still they come back, day after day, resolved they can make a difference. And they do it with camaraderie and a remarkable sense of humor. BURN takes you closer than you’ve ever been — into the fires and into the lives of the men who fight them, exploring human struggles, hope, and personal courage in the face of overwhelming odds.
BURN isn’t just about Detroit firefighters. It’s about all national first responders, whose budgets are on the chopping block. It’s about the people you hope will make it to YOUR house when there’s a fire.
BURN is not fully funded for release. With your help, we can get BURN finished and in front of a wide audience, who can change the conversation for this country’s first responders.
If you agree this important story needs to be seen by a wide audience, pledge now!
Produced & Directed by Tom Putnam & Brenna Sanchez. Executive Producers Denis Leary & Jim Serpico (Apostle, "Rescue Me.")
BURN has been a long, challenging and unique filmmaking experience, every step of the way. Our industry (the film industry) told us there was no audience for a firefighter documentary. Ha! (That's what we said.) And you agreed with us. With the support of fans like you, we have overcome tremendous hurdles. Distributors can spend millions of dollars marketing and releasing a film as small as ours, and no one will ever see it. But because we're directly connected with our audience — YOU! — we feel we can get BURN out in a meaningful way for much, much less. With the support of MSA, we're currently doing test screenings to refine the process for renting theaters, advertising, and getting butts in seats. This self release is a pioneering model, but we're working diligently to ensure it goes well!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Denis Leary and Jim Serpico ("Rescue Me," Apostle Films) are executive producers of the film. They have come on to help fundraise and promote the film, so we can raise the money we need! While they are generous with their time and efforts, they are not taking a fee, and not making a profit. In fact, a percentage of any profits from the film will go to the Leary Firefighters Foundation, specifically to buy gear for the Detroit Fire Department.
The Leary Firefighters Foundation was established in 2000 in response to a tragic fire in Worcester, Massachusetts that claimed the lives of Denis’ cousin, a childhood friend, and four other firefighters. The Leary Firefighters Foundation’s mission is to provide funding and resources for Fire Departments to obtain the best available equipment, technology and training.
