Desu box is a UK based monthly subscription box for Japanese sweets, snacks and drinks. We pack our box with as many goodies as we can, so we can offer the best value Japanese snack box in the UK! With delivery also available worldwide*!
Thank you to everyone who has pledged to help us Kickstart!
Please visit our website for all of your Japanese snacks in the future! ^-^
The above images are an example of what a Desu box can contain, the items will be a surprise each month, however we want to work towards filling the box with even more treats than shown!
A subscription box is an effortless way to try new and exciting things, with a regular stash of treats to enjoy; with Desu box you get a delivery of Japanese confectionery for every month you have subscribed.
There are 4 simple steps to how our subscription box works;
1. Choose a subscription and box size. We have one, three or six month subscriptions available, and two boxes to choose from.
2. Relax while we fill your Desu box full of sweets, which change each month.
3. We mail the box direct to your door, with free postage to the UK!
4. Receive your Desu box, and munch your way through all the Japanese snacky goodness.
There are two of us in the Desu box team who love exploring Japanese culture - It’s just so different to our own, and their crazy varieties of snacks is something we really enjoy. We want to share the experience with you, so we created Desu box!
We were disappointed with how difficult it is to find Japanese sweets here in the UK, even with the thousands available in Japan they rarely find their way abroad. We mostly found our snacks at conventions, but it's expensive to attend more than a couple of events per year. Buying online was no walk in the park either, with sites being out of stock and delivery costs making purchases just not worth the money :(
This is something we had to change!
We know that to create the best value box, we would need to include the most snacks for the best price: the first Desu box idea was born around this.
We decided to put together a large box of sweets, but we didn't want to exclude those of you who wanted to try snacks on a smaller budget or who live outside the UK. So we created two box sizes for you to choose from; the larger “Biggu Desu box” and the kawaii sized “Mini Desu box”, so more of our fans have the chance to enjoy our treats!
The Biggu Desu box is our main event! This box will feature at least 8 snacks, plus a thirst quenching drink. A great variety of treats will be included such as; chocolate, sweets, DIY candy, savoury snacks and gum to name just a few. We will always try to include a great variety so you never get bored! As our costs decrease, we hope to be able to include far more sweets!
The Mini Desu box is great for our fans with smaller budgets or those abroad! This box will feature at least 5 yummy treats from the same categories as before, but will not feature a drink. As our costs decrease we would love to be able to double the size of this box!
Why you’ll love Desu box
We've already received lots of support from over 2,500 fans on social media, so we know you're going to love Desu box; here's some of the main reasons why you'll love our box!;
• Try crazy and weird new snacks – we love trying strange Japanese snacks and we know you will too! Every month is a new surprise with wacky new flavours and snacks!
• The biggest and best in the UK – we put together some examples of the Biggu Desu box, which were about 1.5kg; many competing boxes are 2lbs which is only 907g! The weight will change monthly depending on the snacks, but we always aim high!
• Free UK delivery – don’t pay extra for something you won’t enjoy! International delivery is £7-£12/Mini box, which is the lowest we can go – in the future we may be able to lower this as we gain business rates with delivery providers.
• The best value around – as our subscriber base grows our cost per item decreases, allowing us to put more into the boxes, so you get more for your money!
• Subscribe and save – we’ll lower our per-box price if you want to pay for more upfront! Other boxes drop their price by a large amount if you buy 3 or 6 months up front, whereas we can only lower it slightly – but that’s only because we don’t believe in over-charging for one box in the first place!
“Why is the goal so low?” – 50 of each item is about the minimum that we can order from some wholesalers. At this volume the project will be part time for us, allowing us to invest in creating bigger and better boxes rather than taking profits.
However, if we can get more than our goal then we can negotiate lower wholesale prices, which should allow us to increase the number of items in the boxes without increasing the price.
“How many items are in each box?” – We originally decided on 8-12 for the Biggu Desu box, however as our costs per item get smaller we’ll include more items – we want the box to get better as it grows!
The Biggu Desu box in the example photos weighs 1.5kg (3.3lbs), which makes it the heaviest Japanese snack subscription box that we know of!
The Biggu Desu box will contain at least 9 items and the Mini Desu box will contain at least 5 items – the more we grow, the more we will put into the box! Some months we will send out larger items and you’ll get fewer (but bigger) treats and other months we’ll send out more small treats, but you’ll normally get a good selection of both!
“What snacks are included in the Biggu Desu box?” – We don’t say exactly what’s in the box until we’re sure most of you have received it, because we don’t want to spoil the surprise!
Every month the Biggu Desu box will contain an absolute minimum of 8+ snacks and one drink.
The snacks will include a mix of sweet and savoury treats which could include sugary candy, biscuits, chocolate, crisps or crackers.
Some months we will also include DIY kits or a pudding/cake mix for you to make! The drinks could include tea, flavoured waters, juice or carbonated sodas.
“What’s included in the Mini Desu box?” – We still won’t say exactly what’s in the box! Mini Desu box will include at least 5 treats in the same categories as above, but won’t include a drink - in the future this may change (but no guarantees!).
“How do you plan on making Desu box better?” – As our subscriber-base grows we will need to purchase in more bulk, which will allow us to move to wholesalers who have a higher minimum order quantity.
Buying in higher quantities will allow us to negotiate better prices per item, meaning that we will be able to afford to put more in each box and run special promotions.
This should allow Desu box to get better over time – we don’t intend to be one of those boxes that start out good and then slowly disappear, but we need your help to continually improve the box!
“Is Desu box Vegetarian / Vegan, or does it account for allergies?” – We would love to accommodate for these and it really disappoints us that some fans won’t be able to enjoy everything we offer, but we can’t currently account for this.
Although there are vegan and all-allergy-free snacks out there, we would effectively need to create another box and Kickstart that, so we can establish a minimum subscriber base – because of how Kickstarter works, we cannot offer these in this project.
We’re really disappointed about this, but we want everyone to be able to join in, so we are looking into how we can make this happen.
We sadly need to recommend that if you have allergies or a special diet that you do not purchase Desu box, however if you do then ingredients will be clearly labelled on each item.
“Why is UK delivery free but international delivery so expensive?” –
We want to make delivery as painless as possible, so it’s free for the UK because the cost is minimal, but international delivery is very expensive.
Because the Mini box is smaller, the international delivery cost is more affordable. Once we have established business discounts with the delivery provider we will reduce this cost further.
We do hope that once we have business discounts with Royal Mail, that we will be able to offer Biggu Desu box internationally.
“I can buy these snacks at conventions!” – Some of our snacks will be available at conventions, but if you’re like us then you can only attend a couple of events per year and even then, the snacks are really expensive!
With Desu box you can enjoy a variety of Japanese treats every month, cheaper than you can buy at conventions or online!
"Why limit the number of subscriptions available after the Kickstarter?" - This will simply protect us from overselling our boxes.
To get the best prices means the need to buy in large bulk - large orders will need to be shipped from Japan which can take a long time; far longer than the two weeks between us taking payment and posting the boxes (which is how we will go forward after the first boxes have been delivered).
This means that we may be working a month or two in hand, which could mean placing an order in January for stock that will be delivered between February-March. If we place an order for 200 of each item, we will need to limit the available orders to a maximum of 200. However, if there is demand for Desu box then we will make sure we place large enough orders that this will not be a problem.
In reality this is unlikely to happen unless we are placing incredibly large orders for food, but it is worth mentioning!
“What payment methods will you accept once the website goes live?” - We will be accepting online payments through PayPal and Stripe. You can use whichever you prefer, however you can use PayPal for credit/debit card payments even if you don’t have an account.
We unfortunately won’t be able to take payment through the post or over the phone.
“Are payments auto-renewed at the end of my subscription?”
- Yes and no;
This will not happen once the boxes you have pledged for have all been delivered, however if you then join our website to re-subscribe, then once your subscription has ended it will be automatically renewed unless you cancel.
Cancelling will not be a difficult process and should be as simple as logging into your account then clicking a cancel button, or disabling the subscription in PayPal or Stripe.

Risks and challenges
The main risk for this campaign is that international delivery of stock from Japan to the UK could encounter delays.
To overcome this we have a multi-pronged approach to safeguard against any issues;
First, we are planning to send out the first Desu boxes in November, which will give us roughly 90 days from the project's end date in order to have stock delivered to us, which is more than enough time.
Second, we have established a long list of wholesalers, both within the UK and in Japan, which will allow us multiple options when it comes to delivery speed.
Our UK suppliers can supply us with one or two day delivery, while in Japan we have several suppliers who can offer freight shipments which could take up to two months to be delivered, and several who offer smaller deliveries that could just take a couple of weeks.
With multi-month subscriptions, we can place orders for stock that will last two to three months of boxes at a time, which will ensure that stock is always on hand to deliver, reducing the risk of delays. To go with this, we already have an established freight forwarder who can ship and deliver cargo from Japan within six weeks.
Once we open our website to enable subscriptions after this project has been completed, we will limit the number of available subscriptions to ensure that the number of people subscribed is never more than the amount of stock we have ordered, which will prevent stock shortages if we have a sudden surge in interest – our backers will have first priority on re-subscribing.
The limit will be set above the number of boxes pledged for, so that everyone who backs our project can then re-subscribe before anyone else. For example, if we get 50 boxes pledged for, then we will have 100 boxes available once the website opens, so that everyone has the chance to join!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
