We're a family business, started over 30 years ago by our mom, Barbara. Over the years we've made many changes and a few moves as our customers' needs changed. After 12 years in our last location, and two years of power issues that hit us hard, we sold our building and started looking for a new location. After several months and 3 unsuccessful attempts at finding our new location, we found a great spot that we're excited to move into.
Our new location is larger than our last, and at the moment is under construction to transform the completely empty shell into a new kosher production kitchen, dairy restaurant and specialty food store.
Through our own funds and our bank we raised enough to build out the space as we wanted. Well, that's what we thought. We didn't expect the delays we've experienced which have slowed the construction for half a year. And, we were caught by surprise by new health and safety requirements that we, the contractor, the equipment consultant and the architects didn't know about. So now we find ourselves a little short on funds to complete the build.
We have a list of things we'd like to add to the kitchen and cafe area that can be added down the road, but to get the build done now, we need to upgrade our power, upgrade our HVAC system in the kitchen, and the hood system over our hot line (where we do all the cooking!). We could really use your help to get the extra funds we need to complete our project.
Risks and challenges
We've overcome a number of challenges over the last few years -- the most relevant one being finding a new location for our business. Before we found our new space on King Edward St. we tried renting three other locations and lost all of them. In each of those situations we wanted half of double-unit spaces, but other companies came in and made offers on the whole spaces. So when we found this location we were thrilled. It's in a great spot and it's nice and large -- but not too large.
Our largest challenge now is making sure we have enough funds to complete the project. The delays in building and some unforeseen issues that have come up (new city requirements that none of the building professionals we're working with expected) means we're a little short. That's why we're making this plea. With help from our friends, family, customers and community, we're sure we can get to our goal and continue to serve our community.
We've overcome so many hurdles already. We've secured a fantastic location, gotten approval and permits from the city and are working with really great companies. We are bringing most of the necessary funds to the build ourselves and are using the funds raised from this campaign to get over the final hurdle. And we're offering some great incentives for our supporters to help. So come on and join us as we reach our goals!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
