WE'RE A SUNDANCE AND KICKSTARTER STAFF PICK!
LAST FEW HOURS, HELP US BRING IT HOME --->
MOST SHOWS SUCK. MASA & THE POWER DOES NOT.
MASA & THE POWER is the show WE wanted to watch. Funny, edgy, smart, and full of pendejadas. We wanted something cinematic. We wanted something from the streets. We wanted something EPIC. Most importantly, queriamos TAMALES, guey.
Talking about this lack of quality tamale-filled shows on TV and online, we realized there was only one way we'd get to watch this show: WE HAD TO MAKE IT OURSELVES.
So we put our own time, money and creative energy into creating MASA & THE POWER SEASON 1, centering on a Felipe Fernando Fernandez (aka CHINGO BLING), who arrives from Mexico to the U.S. in 1972 and establishes an illicit tamale empire.
So what happened? People loved it — un chingo! Almost 200K views built on five short episodes. A growing community of 30,000 followers on social media. All in four short months. POR FAVOR BELIEVE IT.
But YOU already know this, because you've probably already seen it, love it and want more. Well, we want to make more. BUT WE NEED YOU TO JOIN THE TEAM to help make SEASON 2.
EIGHT AMAZING NEW EPISODES for SEASON 2.
It's pretty simple. You want Season 2, and we need some cash money to make it. We want to keep it trill and as wild as possible. That means we need independence. That means we need YOU and not some corporate overlords telling us what's right and wrong, cool or not cool. We want this to be YOUR show — the show you want and deserve.
So we are being VERY LEAN and keeping costs to a bare minimum. But some expenses are inevitable, and your money will cover a 10-day shoot plus post-production and editing:
- Travel/hotel for actors/crew (Southwest & Motel 6 all the way, baby).
- Food for the shoot (feeding 10 people for 10 days, 3 meals a day, really adds up). Sorry, we don't accept food stamps.
- Equipment rentals (small expense — we mostly use our own gear).
- Gas & transportation for the shoot (we can't walk everywhere).
- Small stipends for our actors (so annoying).
- Small stipends for our small crew to work on this show 4-6 months, full-time (beaners gotta eat).
We also have some amazing chingaderas (rewards!) for you —
As a TEAM MEMBER, you'll get dope rewards. All of these items are LIMITED EDITION. If you don't get them now, you never will.
And if we don't reach our goal by our Kickstarter deadline, we get nothing. So we need you to PITCH IN and SPREAD THE WORD. Tell all your homies how great this show is. If you don't help a team of independent artists bring you the shows you want, nobody else will. Tell everyone MASA & THE POWER is the shit, that you are badass for helping out, and that they, too, will be baadaaaass if they join the team.
Creator & Showrunner JESUS BELTRAN has been making films for over eight years. He's had projects at Sundance, SXSW, Dallas IFF and over thirty film festivals worldwide. He's a first-generation Mexican-American whose parents came from the states of Morelos & Guerrero in the early 70's. He graduated from Stanford and studied Mechanical Engineering. He loves nachos. Basically, he's just a dude who wants to watch a show set in the 1970's about an illicit tamale dealer — so that's what he made.
Star & Producer CHINGO BLING needs no introduction. He plays our lead character FELIPE FERNANDO FERNANDEZ. He's a rapper, actor, comedian, clothing designer, Tupperware salesman and ladies man. He has over 850,000 social media followers (AND THAT'S NO TYPO). Chingo is a hustler, and he's all about keeping it independent for creative control.
Co-star & Writer SAMUEL MARTINEZ is a gangsta in disguise. He can shoot, edit, write, and much to the surprise of our team, this chameleon can act. As JUAN HIERBAS, Felipe's sidekick, he's harvested the most primo blue corn on the planet, smoked countless fake doobs for the cause, and even lost his virginity to Mother Earth — the hottest MILF of them all.
Co-star JERRY McDANIEL is our token white guy and plays GUEYNE WADE, Felipe's trusted lieutenant. Jerry was the lead in a Sundance feature film a couple years back and also plays forty-seven musical instruments. He's pretty much the coolest white dude we could find.
Executive Producer AMY LO has produced everything from Hollywood 3D movies to Nicaraguan documentaries to maxi pad "branded entertainment." She's been a speaker at SXSW and awarded fellowships from the Sundance Institute and Film Independent. Amy has a dual degree from Stanford and habla Español, so no digas ningunas pendejadas around her thinking she won't get it.
Writer & Editor JP JEANNE hails from the sweltering sands of the Hopi Reservation. JP is our HNIC (Head Native in Charge), keeping everything from writing to post-production on track, and also overseeing all things spiritual — vision quests, sweat lodges, beer and burrito runs, etc. He has an English degree from Stanford and an unhealthy film obsession.
Social Media Strategist & Artist ISABEL ANN CASTRO grew up in San Antonio, TX among the nopales and hoodrats. She got a degree from Texas State in Communication Design but likes to utilize her voice as an ambicultural millenial on social media to raise hell and describe the quality of her breakfast tacos. She makes sure people watch and share our episodes. (Oh wait, you thought we were just gonna make stuff and not make sure people saw it?)
Costume Designer Tiffany Gush, the Queen of EMPIRE VINTAGE CLOTHING, is obsessed with all things retro. A professional costume and vintage fashion stylist for over ten years, she enjoys beehive hairstyles, pit bull dog walking and unicorn t-shirts.
Risks and challenges
We are shooting in the SF Bay Area, so there is a small chance of a massive earthquake during our shoot. We could fall into a crack in the Earth, in which case you would not get Season 2, but you'd read about us in the news, and we'd probably be filming, so you'd get some rad earthquake footage.
But seriously, the only risk here is that your head might explode from the show being so funny. We're a seasoned team of filmmakers and actors with direct distribution to you, and we've built a scrappy but reasonable budget based on this Kickstarter campaign, so if we make our goal, you'll get your Season 2.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
