DeskPal was created out of necessity. We were sick of the desk clutter, bits everywhere scattered across our workspaces. If you can't fit it on the DeskPal it's not worth having. Having the Display Dock helps to keep your favourite gadgets together in the one place.
Stretch Goal 1- $15,000
Option for larger display docks to suit chunky cases. (select at survey time)
Stretch Goal 2- $20,000
We will throw in a matching cup rest for your favourite beverage in the same timber as the one you have chosen (this applies for all orders)
We love this statement. Every piece has it's own uniqueness and character. It has a story to tell, a history... something we like to highlight in every piece we create. All our projects are created in our workshop based on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Australia.
Designing the DeskPal was a lot of fun because we knew exactly what we wanted. Something for our desk that had enough room for the essentials plus a Display Dock for our favourite Tablet and Phone. The proportions of the DeskPal Original are just right allowing a tablet and phone to stay upright without tipping the DeskPal up. Measuring in at 390mm x 100mm x 21mm it doesn’t take up a whole lot of space.
We went through many prototypes on how best to construct the DeskPal. We always knew it was going to be made out of solid block of timber, that was the easy part. Designing the pen holder was a challenge, from cast metal inserts to rubber plugs. We then came up with a simple sandwich of wool felt which grips any object tightly.
The age old design debate…. Light verses Dark. We are offering two timber choices to everyone. First option is a light and rich Tasmanian oak. Second option is a warm and blackened Torrified Ash. Both look equally as handsome, its your choice.
The DeskPal has been designed to hold majority of Phones and Tablets and even Phablets on the Market. The tablet slot measures in at 190mm x 13mm and the phone slot at 140mm x 13mm. DeskPal has been tested with most of the leading devices.
Stage 1- Design and Prototyping - Complete
The Design is all done in-house. Starting with a sketch we then transform it into a 3-Dimensional drawing. From there we manipulate the 3D Drawing into a format (GCODE) that our CNC machine reads.
Stage 2- Timber Selection
All our timbers are hand selected from our local supplier. It comes to us rough sawn and we have it dressed to suit our requirements. Once it's dressed we cut it into manageable pieces ready for machining.
Stage 3- Machining
Now this is the cool part. All our prior hard work comes to life utilising our CNC Machine. The timber is loaded up and the DeskPal is programmed into the machine. It’s pretty cool to see a solid block of timber being transformed into our Handsome DeskPal.
We estimate being able to machine around 35 DeskPal's per day.
Stage 4- Finishing
Once the machining process is complete it's taken to be carefully hand sanded and polished. We seal all our products with an oil blend that brings out the beautiful grain in the timber.
Stage 5- Package and Post
It's all done.... well almost. The DeskPal's get folded up inside their snug fitting cardboard packaging. From here it’s off to the post office and then to your door.
All going to plan here is our production schedule.
April 10-16: Calculate and order the required timber to fullfill the rewards
April 16-19: Dress the timber to size and cut into manageable pieces
April 19-27: Machine and Finish all Early Bird Rewards
April 28-30: Post Early Bird orders out to backers
April 30-May 25: Machine and Finish of remaining rewards
May 25-June1: Post all remaining rewards
Risks and challenges
The prototyping stage is complete and because we look after the entire process in-house we are able to control every aspect. All our materials are locally sourced and we don't rely on overseas manufactures to deliver. We hope we get swamped with orders and if thats the case things may take a little longer then planned, but we have good processes and systems in place to ensure we get it to you as quick as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Unfortunately as this is under the "Product Design" category we are only able to offer one reward per pledge as per Kickstarter guidelines. For multiple orders simply change the pledge amount eg 2x, 3x etc.
All multiple pledges on the EarlyBirds will get sent a survey at the end to confirm which timbers you are wanting.
This way if you're outside of Australia you only have to pay the postage once.
