It will be one of the very few documentaries on design, and certainly the first about the impact design thinking has on the world.

What's our Project?
Design Thinking was applied as a term and methodology by a design firm in 2008. It was received as a tool to solve every problem, from daily life decisions to business challenges to world hunger problems. Attention and debates followed; some insisted on design education in all K-12 schools, some declared it is just marketing tool for that firm, some hoped it would turn his company into Apple. Some said it’s nothing new, just a new packaging of how creative people do things.
Why do we want to make a film out of this? Three reasons:
1. No one is doing it.
So many great ideas are scattered and bounded only to the design community. We want to document it visually so more people can know this is happening.
2. It is a voice for all the “creative thinking” people.
This is not just about designers. This is a shout out to the left-brain dominated world that intuition, observation, experiments and mistakes are important!
3. It is part of a bigger trend in our world.
Values and priorities are changing in our world. Our film explores the changes, through the specific lens of "design thinking."
Through many interviews, we'll ask questions like: What is design thinking? Does it matter to me? What are the pros and cons? Why is it happening now?
Being visual thinkers, we believe that making a documentary film is the most intimate and interesting way to explore these ideas.
How will we do it?
We are a team of four, two from a media studio with filmmaking expertise, two from a non-profit with first-hand observations in and out of the design community.
We are doing the filming and interviews first, and sit down to cutting the film, find musicians to work out great soundtrack, set time for productions and marketing work, and prepare for screening.
We approach filmmaking by two ways:
One, interviewing important practitioners and visionaries who have strong standpoints on the subject. We want to present conflicting opinions. We also want people from different disciplines sharing their thoughts.
Two, exploring practices and happenings in our world, that demonstrate the philosophy we have behind this film. We want to find stories that inspire. Not necessarily design thinking stories, but those that highlight same values.
After gathering materials, we will sit down to create the story we want to tell. We will find talented musicians to help do so. We will reach out to engage people and organizations to listen to the story, and think about what their own needs are.
This is a film and a movement. Our ambition is global: we start here in the U.S., and will spread it to Asia and Europe. It will have different meaning to these different cultures. There will be digital release and screenings, and we will work very hard for physical releases.
Who are in our movie?
As of June 2011, the interviewees include: Angela Yeh, Bill Moggridge, Dan Formosa, George Beylerian, Paul Pangaro, Richard Grefe, Roger Martin, and Susan Szenasy.
As of August 2011, we also interviewed Cory Smith, Gadi Amit, Jon Pittman, Udaya Patnaik and Zachary Rosen & Matthew Cheney (Mission Bicycle).
How Can You Support Us?
So far we've been working very hard to make everything happen on our own: we've been doing all the producing, directing, cinematography and editing. Being based in SF, we even flown to New York to shoot the interviews.
Even with great determination, we still need your help to get this film done and take it to the next level. Right now 50% of the film has been done out of our own pockets. We believe that with your help this film can really be done and reach more people.
Your funding will help cover traveling, filming, post-production and marketing costs. It will feed our tummies and hire us professionals.
