Help bring to life secret-agent worthy wrist watches where traditional rotating hands are replaced by horizontally moving cursors.

What is Division Furtive trying to do?

Over the course of the last 18 months, Division Furtive has designed two "secret-agent worthy" wrist watches and now request Kickstarters' help to bring them to production. The first one to hit the market will be Type 40 and the proceeds from the sales will enable the Division to complete the development of Type 46.

And since that world's most famous secret agent was British, the Division is very excited to start this Kickstarter project in British Pounds! If you are not from the UK, you can use this tool to figure out the conversion in your own currency.

The Type 46 -- or the watch a secret agent should wear on a night at the casino.

Type 46 High-Resolution Photo Gallery

Overview -- A dual linear movement electromechanical watch. Build from scratch (movement and casing) the production of this watch is limited to 46 units.

About the watch -- When the watch is in reading mode, meaning in front of the user at and angle of about 45°, the cursors quickly move to show the current time. At this point, the upper cursor shows the hours and the lower cursor, the minutes. The watch sports no buttons: to activate the secondary functions, the user must tap (or double-tap) the front sapphire crystal.

- Production: Limited to 46 units
- Caliber: 6 mm, Swiss-made electric stepper motors with 25 mm helicoidal link
- Case: Sterling silver with black nanoceramic coating
- Diameter: 50 mm
- Thickness: 16 mm
- Dial: Gold plated mat black
- Glass: Sapphire (front) and mineral (back)
- Cursors: Golden with black stripes
- Sensor: 3-axis accelerometer for front crystal tapping detection
- Battery: User-serviceable AAA/IEC FR03
- Power reserve: 365 days (normal usage)
- Band: 24 mm wide padded and sewed leather
- Clasp: Stainless steel with black PVD finish
- Recommended maintenance: First one after one (1) year, every two (2) years after
- Warranty: 2 years

Watch's features -- Day (units on top cursor and tens on bottom cursor), AM/PM (AM or PM on bottom cursor and current hour on top cursor), exact minutes (units on top cursor and tens on bottom cursor), day of the week, time zone, phase of the moon, chronometer, battery life indicator, time until next maintenance (recommended after the first year and every two years after, unless otherwise specified).

More features -- The watch can be set by light signals from your smartphone  / computer display. Programming device must be a recent smartphone or LCD screen (some screen calibration/adjustment may be required -- so far over 20 different iPhone/Android/Blackberry/LCD makes and models have been tested) and must be web-enabled.  Because of this, the watch can support advanced calendar features like moon phases and automatic date change (including leap-year calculation). The watch can also be set by using the third scale on the back of the watch and the tap/double-tap gestures.

Important notes -- If you are susceptible to epilepsy seizure (or similar disease/discomfort) from rapid bright light flashes, this watch is NOT for you. Furthermore, our best efforts are made to make this watch waterproof, but at this moment it still does not have any certification in this regard and should therefore only be considered water resistant.

The Type 40 -- or the watch a secret agent should wear when fighting villains on the top of a speeding truck while avoiding overpasses

Overview -- A dual linear LED-display watch. Based on the Type 46 design and production limited to 1000 units.

About the watch -- Inspired by the Type 46 design but built for action and robustness. The Type 46's metal casing is replaced by an equally-sized, epoxy-filled plastic structure. The mechanical cursors are replaced by bright amber LEDs. This makes for an incredibly durable watch with a nice feel (a hollow watch this size would feel too light). Each Type 40 watch sports a boldly marked serial number on its left side (limited to 1000).

- Production: Limited to 1000 units
- Case: Epoxy-filled plastic
- Diameter: 50 mm
- Thickness: 16 mm
- Dial: Gold plated mat black
- Glass: Mineral
- Cursors: 25 Amber LEDs (12 for hours and 13 for minutes)
- Sensor: 3-axis accelerometer with glass tap detection
- Battery: User-serviceable AAA/IEC FR03
- Power reserve: 365 days (normal usage)
- Band: Rubber
- Warranty: 1 year

Watch's Features -- The Type 40 has all the same features as the Type 46 except is does not need mechanical maintenance (being purely electronic). Only a battery change (AAA battery) is required when the watch no longer lights up (estimated battery life under normal usage: 1 year).

More features -- The watch can only be set by the light from your smartphone or computer display. Programming device must be a recent smartphone or LCD screen (some screen calibration/adjustment may be required (so far tested over 20 different iPhone/Android/Blackberry/LCD makes and models) must and be web-enabled. Because of this, the watch can support advanced calendar features like moon phases and automatic date change (including leap-year calculation).

Can you tell me more about the perks?

Certainly, the perks are:

- Division Furtive t-shirts (unlimited production but designs limited to this Kickstarter funding campaign)
- Division Furtive "Remove Before Flight" keychain (unlimited production)
- Division Furtive "Not Yours" luggage tag (unlimited production)
- Type 40 collector tokens (unlimited production but designs limited to this Kickstarter funding campaign)
- Type 40 watches (only 1000 available, includes Type 40 collector token)
- Type 46 reservation tokens (only 40 available)
- Dinner for you and a friend with Division Furtive's designer in an upscale Montreal restaurant (includes two (2) Type 40 watches).

T-shirts -- No project is complete without its t-shirt! So here are the Division Furtive t-shirts especially designed for this Kickstarter campaign. You can pick any size (S, M, L, XL, 2XL) and any of the four available styles.

Division Furtive T-Shirt Styles

Type 40 -- You can get a Type 40 as described above. All Type 40 watches come with a Type 40 collector token (see below) that you can later use to select a serial number for your Type 40 before production starts (on a first-come-first-served basis), that is, if more than one serial number is available for the selected reward. All Type 40 backers will be simultaneously contacted to inform them when the online serial number selection process begins.

Type 40 Collector Token -- Crystal-clear acrylic token laser-etched with a unique passcode that certifies its authenticity (the passcode can be checked on Division Furtive's website). Type 40 watch buyers can use the passcode to select a serial number for their watch before production starts (on a first-come-first-served basis).

Type 46 -- There is only one perk directly related to the Type 46: the reservation token. Made out of the same glass used for the Type 46 back glasses and laser-etched with a secret passcode. The token is a collector piece that doubles as a means to signify your interest in buying an actual Type 46. Only reservation token owners will be able to buy an actual Type 46 when production starts. At this point, the following restrictions apply:

- Estimated Type 46 price: US$3600/£2450 (approx.).
- All token owners will later simultaneously be contacted by email to associate a Type 46 serial number to their token using the passcode (first-come-first-served basis).
- Reservation token cannot be traded: the Type 46 buyer must be the original token buyer (backer).
- A deposit will later be requested to cover a portion of the watch building cost when production starts.
- Fabrication of a reserved Type 46 may take up to one (1) year depending on demand.
- Token becomes refundable after one (1) year starting on the date the project is funded if watch is not ready (token remains valid if backer decide to wait longer).
- If backer does not settle deposit within 15 days  from the start of production, token is void (not refundable).

How will the Division do it and what is the current state of advancement of the project?

This project is far beyond the back-of-a-napkin stage. Both watches currently exist and are functional. The graphs below show the current state of development.

The Type 46

Overview -- Type 46 being more complex of the two models, more time is required for each of the different development/production stage. The following graph illustrates the Type 46 development timeline. Detailed explanations follow..

Type 46 Development Timeline
Type 46 Development Timeline

Design Validation -- It is estimated that two (2) more months of design tweaks are required to get to the stellar level of reliability that is expected of Division Furtive movements and to be able to and  launch production. This is the biggest unknown because a new electro-mechanical design can be unpredictable. Right now, the movement works but more tweaking is required to ensure 100% reliability in sensing when the cursor reaches one end or  the other. Recently it was discovered that temperature had an effect greater than expected effect on this mechanism: improvements must be made in this regard.

Movement (Mechanical) Production -- The production (including shipping) of the Swiss motors from the third-party vendor takes two (2) months. The production of the other parts takes six (6) weeks (conducted in parallel with motor production). Once all the parts are gathered (including electronics), each movement takes about one (1) to two (2) days to assemble and a few more days to test (final testing procedure not finalized yet).

The Type 46 caliber (uncoated)
The Type 46 caliber (uncoated)

Movement (Electronics) Production -- The electronics (printed circuit boards and assembly) are manufactured and assembled locally. The design is already on its 4th revision and is has therefore matured and improved. Functionality, power and heat have already been analyzed. It is estimated that one last revision will be required to reach production status.

Casing Production -- Production has already started and 14 casings are already being finalized (currently being polished and coated). For the following casings, it takes one (1) month to get the "blanks" from the third-party vendor, two (2) weeks to machine them (local machine shop) and two (2) weeks to polish and coat them (another local shop). It only takes a few minutes to install the front sapphire and back glass on each casing (done in-house). There are currently 20 sapphires in stock and the remainder must be ordered (6-8 weeks delivery time).

Final Assembly - It takes only one (1) minute to install the movement into its designated casing! :)

The Type 40

Overview -- Type 40 requires about another six (6) weeks of design work, design validation and production test runs before actual production can begin. The following graph illustrates the Type 46 development timeline. Detailed explanation follows.

Type 46 Development Timeline
Type 46 Development Timeline

Design Validation -- Most of the watch's functions (time keeping, etc.) are inherited from the Type 46 and are already known to work well. What differs is the way "cursors" are displayed: using electronics instead of mechanics is a great simplification and the designed circuits and software has been working very well since day 1. The plastic casing is watch has been used over 6 months when evaluating the early Type 46 movements (before getting actual metal casings) and this looks to age very well.

Casings Production -- All casings are manufactured using rapid prototyping. This part is outsourced to a reliable vendor that the Division has been working with for two years. The Division bought a Form 1 SLA 3D printer (Backer #17! Yeah!) but the machine will reach us too late to do actual production (and it is unknown when black resin will become available).

Electronics Production -- The electronics (printed circuit boards and assembly) are manufactured and assembled locally. The design is already on its 4th revision and has therefore matured and improved. Functionality, power and heat have already been analyzed. It is estimated that one last revision will be required to reach production status.

Assembly -- Everything is assembled in-house using black epoxy. It is estimated that a dozen of filling trial runs will be necessary to perfect this art. Therefore many "No. 000" casings will be needed during the testing phase!

How the funds will be used?

As you can see, most of the pledges are for the Type 40. Therefore, a good part of the funds will be use to manufacture Type 40 watches and other rewards for backers.

However, in order for the production of the Type 46 to be economically viable (even if only 46 are being made), its core component (a micro stepper motor with custom specs manufactured in Switzerland) has to be purchased in volume. Therefore, for the Type 46 to exist, the Type 40 has to be successful first: the balance of funds will be used to make a volume purchase of motors for the Type 46.

Finally, if the project surpasses its minimum goal, money will be used to cover the remainder of the Type 46 production cost (motors are only one third of the Type 46 cost and buying all the parts in bulk makes the project more economically feasible). Whatever money is left will be used to buy new design software and acquire test equipment (instead of renting it).

Who is behind Division Furtive and what qualifications does this person have to complete this project?

Division Furtive (french for Stealth Division) is the brainchild of designer Gabriel Ménard and project manager Paolo Gatto. Division Furtive collaborates with many other people and corporations, who provide parts, services and advice to materialize its creations.

Gabriel holds a bachelor’s degree in microelectronics and master's degree in image processing from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Since 2003, he has been working as an engineer in the microelectronics (semiconductor designer) and electronics (circuit board designer) industry (Analog Devices, Best Buy, Vizio, Onkyo and Audyssey). During his many trips to China to put products into mass-production, he realized his desire to engage in a smaller scale practice: creation of limited production items. Wrist-watches have been selected has the product of choice because of Gabriel's long time interest in this form of art, market openness towards independent designers and limited production, and the ability to create those watches working in small teams.

Paolo holds a bachelor's degree in computer engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada and a master's degree in advanced computing from Imperial College London in London, United Kingdom. Paolo has been working for prestigious automotive companies such as Ferrari in Italy and McLaren in the United Kingdom. Paolo manages the project and oversees logistics (everything that is not actual watchmaking).

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

General R&C -- Given that all the part manufacturing is outsourced, this is subject to delay from third-party vendors which would delay production of the watches (final assembly is done in-house). Furthermore, if some parts are ordered and a design error is discovered only later, this would have a high financial impact on production because redesigned parts would need to be reordered. This is why a lot of focus is placed on testing the design before production starts. In parallel, when making more than a few units, it can be discovered that "yield" (part that are good vs. parts that are defective) is lower than expected and therefore some redesign is required to make production cost-effective. Conclusion: if too many errors are discovered too late in the game, this can become very expensive (equivalent of making the same unit more than once).

Type 40 specific R&C -- Even if prototypes already exist there are still risks inherent to circuit design and assembly of the mechanical components. It might be discovered after long-term testing that some portion of the circuitry fails or that the epoxy filled construction do not age well (e.g.: repeated temperature changes weakens some portion of the watch, separation occurs between epoxy and plastic shell, etc.). These are variables that are discovered along the way and may imply some redesign. However, the more the prototypes are tested, the fewer the chances of failure can occur. Being already 6 weeks in "every-day life testing" without a single failure gives us the best hope at this regard, especially that there will be even more testing before actual production starts.

Type 46 specific R&C -- Same challenges as the Type 40, plus the added complexity of the Type 46 design. Having some moving parts means that wear must be considered and this takes more time to evaluate. Again, if some failure is discovered late, some redesign could be required and delay the production and/or increase production cost dramatically.

FAQ

  • It simply wouldn't be fair, don't you think? That being said, given that the exact time when the selection process starts will be broadcast in advance, chances of not getting a serial number you like are thin (if give it your best shot).

    Last updated:
  • You can change the AAA battery using the side door of the watch (which you can open using the included hex key).

    Last updated:
  • Certainly, please calculate the cost of everything, pledge that amount, then select the highest reward. It's very important that you select a Type 40 or Type 46 reward to be accounted for in the specified serial number range. In the final survey (once the Kickstarter campaign is over) we will ask you what goodies you would like.

Please note that Kickstarter's guidelines forbids multiple identical item purchase, so please do not pledge higher in the hope to get more than one watch.

Furthermore, because all watches have a unique serial number and are accounted for in the rewards, it is necessary to take the £200 pledge (currently limited to 20) if you want to reserve a Type 46 AND buy a Type 40.

    Last updated:
  • Certainly, let say you want a Type 40 (at £120 reward level) and a luggage tag (£15), pledge £135 and select the "TYPE 40/No.010 to No.049" reward. In the final survey (once the Kickstarter campaign is over) we will ask you to specify exactly what goodies you would like.
