Ships, ships and more ships. oh my!

We’re going to talk about ships! Those of you who were with us during the Kickstarter might remember that giving ships an upgrade path with tech trees and stuff was part of our initial plan. We had always intended to add new player ships that you could unlock after fully upgrading your current ships, too.
For instance, something like a next-generation Typhoon ("Hurricane?") once you unlocked all the Typhoon's tech tree items. During our early access playtesting though, we realized that we weren't doing a good enough job teaching new players the fundamentals of the game. Even with a tutorial mission and "Meet The Ships", there was just too steep of a learning curve right out of the gate. To address this, we added ships of earlier generations that are unlocked before the current ships. This lets new players focus just on flying and shooting basic weapons before worrying about more advanced stuff like tools, gadgets, and team roles.
With our new matchmaking system, we'll also be better able to match players based not just on skill, but where they are in that learning process- based on what they’ve unlocked. Of course, if you have specific ships as rewards from the Kickstarter or crowdfunding, you'll be able to unlock your reward ships right away.
