About this project
The Monster Numbers is a 10-page board book that combines legendary monsters and the numbers 1-10. It's written by Darren J. Gendron, and illustrated by Obsidian Abnormal, the creative team behind http://www.HelloWithCheese.com
UPDATE: Thank you so much for the outpouring of support! We really can't do these crazy ideas without you. For further updates on The Monster Numbers, please go to ScallywagsInternational.com

When I found out I was going to become a father, I wrote The Monster Alphabet. I wanted a book to read to my son that was filled with nerdy delight, and came up with an alphabet based off the monsters of legend.
Now that he's 2, we've been working on teaching him his numbers. So naturally, I wrote The Monster Numbers.
Obsidian Abnormal, my artist partner on Hello With Cheese, was excited to bring back Monster Mondays.
Again, we went with as many cultures as possible. To challenge myself, I decided that each monster or legendary creature would be from a different culture.
And again, I went back to writing in iambic heptameter, the 17th century epic poem-writing technique.
And like Monster Alphabet, the book contains bonus material like a pronunciation guide, an origin and fun facts about the monsters' respective legends.
Want something new for The Monster Numbers? It's also a book about body parts! Instead of counting one Cyclops and seven Balaurs, we have the numbers be the one eye of the Cyclops, and the seven mouths of the Balaur.
We loved how the Monster Alphabet flashcards turned out, so we're bringing those back.
The flashcard set for the Monster Numbers will feature all 26 of the original Monster Alphabet flashcards, plus 10 new double-sided Monster Number flashcards. On one side, they'll have the numbers 1-10. On the other side, they'll have the letters C, J, S, Y, Q, T, B, S, K and R.
Something that I've always been a fan of is trading pins. We'll be designing and making metal and enamel pins of the monsters, starting with the Yong, the Tarasque, the Sanzuwu and the Kyuubi no Kitsune.
Initially, there are only 100 Pin Pal early bird spots. After they sell out, we will open more backer levels at a higher price.
Risks and challenges
Getting a board book printed is incredibly difficult. It's expensive and time-consuming. As with our last project, The Monster Alphabet, we're planning on spending a lot of our own money to get this book done.
But what we've learned since Monster Alphabet is the time it takes to get a board book printed. There's going to be about three weeks of pre-press work as various packages are express delivered around the globe. There's going to be another two weeks of the factory actually printing the book and packing it up. Then that pallet or two of books needs to get to the docks and wait for the next cargo ship to fill up (if we're lucky, that takes a day. If we're not, a week or two).
The boat then takes a slow cruise down through the Panama Canal, then up the East Coast of the USA, then into a US Customs dock, which will admire my pallet of books for a week or two. Then it's trucked on down to the Scallywags International office.
Once it's in my hands, there's one last huge risk - the size of the order. Churning out a thousand or two orders is not easy. But we've learned from past Kickstarters. We've improved our labeling process, our packing materials, and our handling methods. Scallywags International is now very, very capable of shipping out massively-sized reward orders.
