**Haven't heard Mockingbird? Download it here**
Man, you really never know what's around the next corner. Whether it surprises you with joy or grief, sometimes a thing happens, a circumstance, a moment, a piece of work that changes everything, forever.
For me, 10 years ago, the Mockingbird album was waiting around one of those corners. It was my third record, but in many ways it felt like my first. Its production and sound were radically simple and focused, its songs were surprisingly political, and deeply personal, and its content got me into deeper and trickier waters than I had ever been in before.
Later, by way of the ‘Free Derek Webb’ campaign, Mockingbird lit the fuse that led my founding NoiseTrade.
So, it only seemed fitting to take the opportunity of Mockingbird’s 10th birthday to do a little celebrating.
For starters, I will be pressing a limited number of Mockingbird on vinyl.
But as my primary interest is always more in the future than the past, I’m curious what Mockingbird might sound like if I was making it here in 2015. So, I’m taking all of the vocals from the original Mockingbird recordings and re-imagining and re-building the rest from scratch, remix style.
Last but not least, I want to come and play the entire Mockingbird album live in your living room. I’m planning about a dozen Mockingbird house shows, a few of them up for grabs here on Kickstarter.
To close out the Mockingbird shows, there will be one full-band performance of the album here in Nashville, TN. Because seats will be limited, we’ll also be recording and filming the show for those of you who can’t join us in person.
As an artist, I'm always so grateful when an album seems to really connect. And most of the time, I'm just as surprised as anyone at what comes out in these records and songs, when and why those moments of resonance happen. If Mockingbird was one of those moments for you, or maybe you’re just discovering it now, I hope you’ll support this campaign. This is something I would love to do along with you, and I cannot do without you.
Kickstarter gives artists a unique opportunity to bring patrons into the creative process. Because Mockingbird was one of those albums that resonated with so many people, I thought it only fitting to bring everyone together to celebrate this anniversary. The money from this campaign is going to pay for the pressing of the vinyl, the remix album, and the live recording.
Risks and challenges
I have built in plenty of time for the pressing of the vinyl, the production of the remix album, and the recording of the live album, but timelines can always shift during production. I will be sure to communicate any changes along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
