About this project
The ArCANIS Tarot consists of a full 78 card Tarot deck, complete with its own limited edition, custom designed tuck box. The cards themselves are printed on 3.5"x5.5", high quality, 350gsm card stock with rounded corners, so they're built to last even after you've given your hundreth relationship reading to that one friend of yours that asks every week... you know the one.
There are 22 Major Arcana cards, and 56 Minor Arcana cards, split into 14 cards of 4 different suits - swords, wands, pentacles, and cups.
The Major Arcana are the twenty-two trump cards at the beginning of a tarot deck. Each of these cards bearing a specific name and number carries a significant meaning when pulled during a reading, and are typically considered the most important cards in the deck. They are usually the first things a new tarot user will learn.
The Minor Arcana
The Minor Arcana are the 4 suits, with 14 cards in each, that make up the rest of the 78 card tarot deck. Typically, they are sorted as Swords, Wands, Pentacles, and Cups. They serve to clarify detail and nuances in a person's tarot reading, depending where in the spread they lay. Think of them more as signifying changes or insight into your day-to-day life, whereas the Major Arcana is typically interpreted as having a more significant telling or impact - signaling a larger turning point in your life.
The ArCANIS Tarot Art Book is a 6"x8", 168 page, full color, hardcover book, designed to accompany the deck. Complete with written interpretations and meanings of the cards themselves, as well as popular tarot spreads for multiple types of readings, this book is for both the tarot expert and the newcomer who is just beginning to learn. The book can also act as a stand alone on its own for backers who just want to see the art in collection, who may or may not be interested in receiving an actual deck.
For the $16,000 stretch goal, I'll be able to have the cards foil stamped on both the front and back! The front and back border around the cards, and the silver area of the four suit design on the back of the entire deck will be foil stamped in silver.
For the $17,500 stretch goal, ALL BACKERS who pledged at the Hermit or Magician tier and above (Including the sold out $25 early-backer tiers) will receive a hard enamel pin - where the final design will be voted on in a final poll by backers!
The ArCANIS Tarot combines simple, modern character design with a love of animals. People can be very particular about the deck they use for their own readings, and with this in mind, I found it important to invest in designing a deck I would purchase for myself. I have wanted to illustrate a deck for nearly ten years, but could never find a design aesthetic that felt "right". There were many false starts over the years, but the moment I designed the Devil card for Inktober this past year, I knew I hit what I was looking for.
I created the initial softcover book of the 22 Major Arcana for the CTN Animation Expo in November. The response I received at the Expo was so amazing that it really pushed me to make the full deck! To make things even better... I partnered with CTN's founder, Tina Price, to turn the original illustrations into a full gallery show, opening July 28th, at her amazing Center Stage Gallery in Burbank!
David DePasquale is a Los Angeles based visual development artist in the animation industry. He has done work for Nickelodeon, Disney Television Animation, and is currently employed at Dreamworks, working on a new, super secret show for Netflix!
Originally from New Jersey, David attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC where he earned his BFA degree in Illustration before moving out to the west coast to pursue his childhood dream - designing for animation. Much of his personal work is influenced by modern design and the artwork of animation masters from the mid-century.

My funding goal of $13000 will cover everything from deck and tuck box printing, book printing and binding, non deck/book printing for postcards and prints, shipping costs, and kickstarter fees.
As always, thank you so much for your support and your willingness to help fund this project. This deck has been, far and away, my largest personal artistic undertaking to date. It means a great deal to me, and I hope with your funding, it will mean a great deal to you, too!

Risks and challenges
Although the entire 78 card deck is completely illustrated, there is still a bit of work to do on the book layout. I'm not a graphic designer, so I'm working with the folks at Global PSD to make sure anything I design will print properly and in time. The book is a huge undertaking, and I'm double and triple checking my card interpretations and spread explanations to be absolutely certain I'm not publishing misinformation.
With any project involving publishing, whether it's a deck or a book or both, printing is always a risk. I have tried to do as much research as possible to assure I can get any and every reward out on time, and I would rather over estimate a shipping date than not be able to met my backers' expectations. Transparency and consistent communication are something I promise with this and every project I create in the future, and as I continue hitting goal posts with this project (i.e. receiving Hard Proofs of the book and deck, receiving updates with both printing houses regarding every stage of publishing, shipping updates, and any hiccups along the way) I will absolutely, 100% keep my backers informed.
I am always open for questions... after all, we're on this journey together! I couldn't do with without each and every one of you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
