Being an immigrant, I have met a lot of individuals that have lived far away from their significant others for 5, 10 or even 15 years due to legal matters. I, therefore, have decided to focus on the idea of portraying the real lives of these real individuals in my film.
Departures aims to pinpoint the concept of distance, which might reveal certain issues of trust, faithfulness and loyalty when loved ones are apart from each other for a long time. The film chooses to do this through a journey of a newly arrived immigrant lady in her mid 40s.
Departures is my thesis project for a 1 year filmmaking masters program at the School of Visual Arts. I have started the auditions process and am planning to shoot this film in February 2011.
After ten years of legal red tape, a Turkish woman in her mid-40s finally realizes her dream of migrating to the states and being reunited with her husband. Little does she know that the 12 hour flight is only the beginning of her ordeal as she faces a series of escalating challenges from customs to her ride through the wilds of New Jersey to at last reach her husband.
Just like any art project, making a short film is economically challenging. Hence, I am looking for pledges to take care of expenses for casting, food and location costs.
AFTER THE FILM:
Departures will have its screening in May 2011. Because of its universal concept that deals with distance and faithfulness, I aim to send it to different film festivals around the world and will keep you updated about the progress through kickstarter.
