In January of 2017, Density Media was launched, with the goal always being to publish games in zine format, moving away from the expensively produced tomes more common in the tabletop RPG field, not as an FU, but more as brand, messaging, and urgency: streamlining and minimizing the production process to allow for quick creation and turnaround.
As the real-world becomes a shittier place for so many people, we have further focused our game design efforts on moving away from games focusing on violence as a core mechanic of task resolution, and aspire to create games that can be something else: uplifting, violent without violence, thoughtful, satirical, earnest, and often with a Point of View. Since launching, we have released 6 games, their tone and styles varying wildly. We believe in Zine Games.
We have been passionate enough about zines that through previous work we were featured in the show alt.youth.media at the New Museum in NYC. We sell our pdfs for the same amount Marco Rubio accepts from the NRA for the life of every student in the state of Florida: $1.05. The goal is to get people to read them. Print copies are priced so that they generate enough revenue for the next print run. And, if you're a zine publisher, let's swap!
STRINGS is a in idea we have had percolating for some time, and as a concept is designed to be easily integrated into most any RPG campaign or session. The proverbial and literal questions it asks will raise investment in your game.
STRINGS asks not only what keeps a person clinging to life, but also presumes that as any Psych 101 class told us, memory is fallible. Instead of asking what happens to the party when a character dies, it asks what happens when they live.
There is an edge to STRINGS which may put some players outside their comfort zone, so, as with anything, clear communication and expectations prior to integration and implementation is key.
Why did we choose to release a meta-supplement as opposed to a full-fledged game? Given the timeline and front-end investment, we can safely say that this project will be done and easily deliverable. We have numerous other projects in various stages of development (a magical boarding school that is less sanitized than fiction might suggest; a school for supers, without the hero or villain tag; the teen mystery genre; several system-less supers adventure ideas; elaborations and expansions of ideas hinted at in previously published games) but promising them in this format would be less guaranteed.
STRETCH GOAL: $333: SWAG!
If we can reach this goal, we will develop and release with STRINGS some sort of swag, a sticker or pin. Swag will be included with any physical order. UNLOCKED!!!
STRETCH GOAL: $1,000: Hi-Ho!
If we reach $1,000, included with each physical order will be a copy of the micro-LARP experience, Hi-Ho! Hi-Ho! is a one-person LARP experience that is designed to bring more joy into the world. PDF copies will be included as well with any PDF order.
Risks and challenges
The writing and layout have begun, and given our success and output, delivering in the time-frame allotted should not be an issue at all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
