Documenting the undocumented.

“I gazed out into the quaint midnight colours of the Melville Bay, felt the tremble of insomnia in my muscles and rejoiced in seeing the Human World in distinct ways.”

– Jette Bang, Greenland, 1941

Inuit Now is a long-term photography project aimed at documenting the undocumented; telling stories about modern-day Inuits. In recent years the Arctic region has drawn international attention due to the possible finding of natural resources. But while stories about oil fields, rising sea levels and mines have been plentiful, there has been almost no attention towards the region's most important resource; the Inuits.

Therefore, we (Dennis Lehmann and Lasse Bak Mejlvang) decided to initiate Inuit Now. In 2014, we each went to a different area of Greenland. Lasse went to Sisimiut to photograph the fastest growing city in Greenland with almost 6.000 inhabitants. Here, young people flock to attend higher level education institutions that can not be found in the outskirts, thereby creating a buzzing, metropolitan atmosphere like that of any European city. Dennis, on the other hand, went to Tasiusaq in the district of Upernavik where there are almost no young people left. Instead, their parents, grandparents and younger siblings constitute the small settlement of 248 people living in a harsh archipelago the size of Great Britain. Here, most people are either fishermen or hunters living an isolated life in close contact with nature.

But in today’s media landscape complex stories are difficult to get published. So instead of adapting our story into well-known formats we have decided to publish the work ourselves in collaboration with the small independent publishing company MTHM Books. But we need your support to realize this. Working in Greenland is extremely expensive and getting funding for a project like this has proven to be difficult.

We have the works, the words and the layout of the book ready. All we need right now is 40000 DKK (approximately 6000 USD) to cover the printing expenses. By supporting our debut photobook you will also be supporting the Inuit Now project on a long term. Within the next five years we plan on going back North several times to search for new stories. And with a published photobook we will have a much better chance at receiving the funding needed to produce this kind of work in the future.

To most people Greenland is a place of mythical proportions - and by all means, Greenland is special. An island the size of Europe inhabited by fifty six thousand people is destined to imply certain dreams in the minds of outsiders. People had ideas about the North Pole, about the wilderness of ice masses, before anyone had been there to witness it. But even today, what do we actually know about life on the world’s largest island?

To examine life and identity in the Arctic today, one has to look at the world from multiple angles. That was what photographer Jette Bang understood while sailing, tired and disoriented, across the Melville Bay at midnight in 1941. That Greenland is diverse, and that painting a complete picture of it is an impossibility.

Together, our works combine to create not a single, monolithic vision, but rather a diverse and fragmented portrait of a people that is everything but the simple and often polarised representation in international media. The humble life of the fishermen in the North is juxtaposed and mixed with the flourishing pulse of the youth in Sisimiut, thereby creating a heterogeneous narrative of a paradoxical place that can be difficult to understand.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge with this project has been getting the funding needed to produce this kind of work. We started Inuit Now because we think it is important and because we like it, not to make money. And so far, we have made absolutely no profit on it. On the contrary, we have been financing everything out of our own pockets.

Luckily, we already did take care of the most expensive part of the show; producing the stories and making the exhibition. As mentioned above we already have the print layout made by Hans Munk from MTHM Books. We also have a professional printing house all set for printing, and we have an exhibition during Copenhagen Photo Festival where we plan on launching the book.

So what are the risks and challenges with this specific Kickstarter campaign? If anything, it could be shipping out the rewards on time. We plan on shipping everything immediately after the exhibition opening on June 11, but as you might have noticed we have estimated the delivery time to July 2015. This is a precaution so that we know for sure that we will meet our estimated delivery times.

On this notion we also urge you to contact us with any questions about the rewards. Whether about delivery or the product itself, getting in touch will probably be the best solution. The framed fine art prints for example can only be shipped within Denmark. But if you happen to live somewhere else and still want one of those prints exactly, please don’t hesitate to get in touch so that we can find a solution.

For questions and all other inquiries regarding the project, please leave a comment or send us an email at info@inuit.nu.
