The Freedom Trail® is a 2.5 mile footpath running through Boston, Massachusetts, that highlights 16 nationally significant historic sites that tell the story of the American Revolution and attracts more than 4 million tourists annually.
Through this book I have engineered and brightly illustrated each of these historic sites so that they pop off the page. The first of its kind, this completely original pop up book includes 16 architecturally accurate pop ups, profiles of each of the five historic weathervanes along the trail and written history about landmarks like The U.S.S. Constitution and the Old South Meeting House.
The time has come to print and publish the book and this is where I need your help!
I plan on self-publishing the book and distributing it through boutiques, bookstores, and gift shops along the trail and throughout Massachusetts. The $52,500 goal will fund a limited run of 5,000 books and cover the cost of printing, production, and shipping.
The Backstory of Boston's First Pop Up Book
A little over four years ago I traveled to Boston and was excited to walk The Freedom Trail® for the first time. I became fascinated with Boston’s history, beauty, and the dedication the city has shown in preserving its monuments and landmarks. Toward the end of my trip I searched for a Freedom Trail® pop up book to bring home to add to my collection of souvenir pop up books. When I couldn’t find one, I searched for any Boston pop up book. To my disappointment I found that there were no popup books about Boston at all (only one of Fenway Park, out of print)! So I began to create one.
With encouragement from The Freedom Trail® Foundation and permission to use their medallion and trademark, I developed a succinct written history about the trail and its landmarks and created full color illustrations and architecturally accurate pop ups. The book is truly a one of a kind memento perfect for history lovers, educators, art enthusiasts, and of course, children.
What's in the book?
There are 16 pop ups in the book as well as a selection of movable pieces and full color illustrations. All painstakingly detailed to echo the architectural splendor of the historically significant buildings of Boston.
- Detail pop ups of a full color rendering of The Freedom Trail® Foundation Medallion and the Frog Pond building on Boston Common
- Fully three dimensional, two page pop ups of The Massachusetts State House, Old State House, U.S.S. Constitution, King's Chapel, Old North Church steeple and Faneuil Hall
- Old Corner Bookstore Illustration with moveable sign 1717 to 1826
- A pop up of my artistic interpretation of Paul Revere's [actually Henry Pelam's] etching of the Boston Massacre
- And more!
If I am funded, I will be able to obtain the final color dummy book from the assembly house. After any edits are completed, the book will go to press. Once printed, the book will be hand assembled, piece by piece, and glued together. When the inside is complete, it will be mounted into the hard cover binding, boxed and shipped to Boston. Then, after the Kickstarter Rewards are sent I will work to distribute and promote the book. With the help of The Freedom Trail® Foundation, their five approved stores for merchandise purchase, the famous Cheers Bar & Restaurant and other local shops that express interest in carrying the book for sale The Freedom Trail® Pop Up book will be available to the public.
We have had some requests to see the weathervane card. Here it is! (Of course, your cards won't have the watermark on them :-)
Risks and challenges
This campaign will fund printing, production, and shipping for a limited run of 5,000 copies of this historic book.
The greatest challenge for me was engineering and illustrating the book, then sourcing the best place to manufacture it. Now, that is all done and all that is left is the printing.
But, creating a pop up book is costly! They are all hand produced and assembled and are considered risky investments by traditional publishers at such a small run and limited geographic scope. One of the benefits of crowdfunding this project is that I will be able to make the book available to the general public by removing the risk associated with making one large investment.
As with all projects, setbacks occur every now and then. I will do my best to send your chosen reward to you at the estimated time, but can't promise it will arrive right on time. If there are delays in production we will promptly inform you.
This book represents four years of research, engineering, illustration, and love and I hope to include you in the publication and success of Boston's first pop-up book!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
