About

Denexa 100% Plastic Playing Cards are the most durable, high-performance plastic playing cards that can possibly be made. With your help, we'd like to make that resiliency available to those that prefer bridge-size cards.

First, a little bit about our cards and what we're trying to do here. Our cards are intended to be played with by serious players! If you're the sort of person who hosts a poker night every week, or you get your friends together for a regular game of Canasta or Spades, or if you're the world's top-ranked 52-Card Pickup player (yes, we know, you have a trophy to prove it and everything), then Denexa 100% Plastic Playing Cards are for you. They're designed to remain in service for thousands of hands—while paper cards tend to get sticky and beat-up over time, plastic cards are easily washable. We select our plastics and inks with care to ensure the cards will not chip or crack and the ink will not scratch off or wear away over time.

Our playing cards are already available in poker size, which is the usual size you see available for sale at the store. However, lots of people would rather play with bridge size cards, which are slightly narrower. Despite what you'd expect from the name, this includes most poker players, as casino poker rooms almost always use bridge-size cards. Bridge-size cards are also perfect for players with smaller hands and for games that require the player to hold a large number of cards, like, well, Bridge, and also Hearts, Spades, and Canasta.

For this project, we are going to produce both standard-index and jumbo-index cards. Standard-index cards will have indices (the numbers/letters in the corners) that are 7.5 mm tall, while jumbo-index cards have will have 14 mm-tall indices.

All of our cards feature indices set in Futura, a typeface specifically selected for its excellent visibility. Our pips are designed to be bold and easily distinguishable. This combination of features, especially on the jumbo-index cards, makes our cards particularly well-suited for players with diminished vision or for those who play games such as Texas Hold'em and Omaha, where players are required to view cards from across the table.

Our court cards have been completely redrawn for this project. The designs have been enhanced with new details to create a fuller, richer look and feel on each card. Design work is approximately 75% complete on this deck at time of writing; inking is complete on all court cards, with vectorization/colorization work yet to be done on seven of them. As such, the designs are not yet finalized and may be revised prior to production.

We're retaining the joker artwork from our poker-size cards. Each joker contains half of an image which, when the two jokers are laid edge-to-edge, depicts Genevieve the jester running away from an angry dragon named Shadow. (He just really hates jesters. We don't know why and at this point we're too scared to ask.) Each deck also includes a 55th card with our defect-replacement guarantee, art credits, and production information.

We are also retaining the Cardinal Directions back design from our poker-size deck, modified to fit the new dimensions. The design is a simple geometric pattern with a white border to protect the edges of the design from wear.

After all Kickstarter rewards are distributed, these cards will be for sale at the Denexa online shop. They will also be available for sale at Loot & XP, a game store and cafe also funded by Kickstarter backers like you, which will be opening this month here in Norman.

Rewards

Enough about the cards, you want to hear about the rewards, right? Well, we decided to keep it simple and just make the cards the rewards! $25 will get you one two-deck set of cards in either standard or jumbo index (you pick). For every $25 on top of that, you'll get another set.

Each set includes one red deck and one blue deck. Additionally, each set sent out as a backer reward will feature Kickstarter-exclusive packaging artwork!

Fulfillment of this project's rewards will be done in-house. We will utilize our existing fulfillment processes that are in place for our online store. Rewards will ship to the United States only, via USPS. Shipping is included in the price of the pledge.

We have an idea in mind for a stretch goal, but let's reach the main goal first...

Risks and challenges

As Kickstarter projects go, ours is a low-risk one. While this is our first Kickstarter, Denexa Games has produced three prior runs of cards, so we're familiar with how the production process works and the approximate costs involved. The main risk, as with all projects of this nature, is of production delays. There is also the risk of cost overruns; however, Denexa is committing a large portion of the capital required for this project and will be able to cover any unexpected expenses.

The primary challenge in this project will be selecting a suitable supplier that will meet our quality standards. If possible, we would like to produce our cards in the United States; if the cost is prohibitive, however, it may be necessary to enlist an overseas supplier.
