The three micro-roleplaying games in this campaign are ready for a few hours of gaming and are easily expandable to an extended campaign. Each one offers a quick setup to get you into a fast-moving game with very little to no prep time. All you need are 2-5 players, a few decks of standard playing cards, pencils and paper, and an afternoon.
You’re a Citizen of the MegaCity in this cyberpunk game. It’s 20 minutes into the future and the world is a dangerous place. Slap some chrome on, hack the Network, and fight the Man. vs. MIRRORSHADES contains a wealth of locations and opposition forces, plus rules for hacking a global network from your living room in a tight little package.
Set in the Caribbean of our childhood memories, villainous pirates sail the seas. Captain a crew of pirates or defend the good people of Port Victoria from them. Fly your own colors or declare allegiance to one of the Great Powers. vs. PIRATES contains rules for naval combat, a simple generator for towns and targets in the islands, and great feats of derring-do.
Strange things are afoot in your sleepy little town: odd lights in the sky, something unnatural is moving the woods, and the phones have gone out. In vs. MARS, you and your friends are in a small town during an alien invasion. With a half-dozen different invaders to choose from and several stock locations to take refuge in, you might find that other survivors might be the more pressing threat...
Any one vs. game for $8. Two vs. games for $15. Or all three for $20.
Want to leave your mark in the game? At a limited $50 level, you get all the vs. games and unlocked expansions in this campaign, plus your character is in one of the games!
THE VS. GAMES
All three games are printed on both sides of a multi-panel sheet of 10pt glossy cardboard stock paper that folds down to a 5.5” square. (Stretch goal expansions are on 5.5” square sheets.) Each title is a complete, self-contained game. All you need are 2-5 players, a deck of regular playing cards for each player, something to write on and with, and about three hours.
Playing any vs. game follows a basic guideline: Reveal a number of cards equal to one of your character's attributes – if any of the cards’ ranks beats a target level, you succeed!
The game system is based on vs. Monsters by Philip Reed, which you can find more about – including downloading a copy of the original game – at http://www.battlegrip.com/what-is-vs-monsters/ .
These games are inspired by the condensed Wild West version of his game, vs. Outlaws. The games offered in this campaign take the same form factor of that one, which drove the game design. “By working within a small (5.5" square, six total panels) format it helps to strip away unnecessary complexity and fluff, leaving you with only what you need to actually play the game,” Phil explained.
The vsM Engine and the vsM Engine logo are trademarks of Philip Reed and are used with permission. Visit battlegrip.com for more information about the designer.
Three content updates! A format update! A graphic update!
Add fantasy races and magic to vs. MIRRORSHADES' MegaCity with vs. MAGICSHADES. It’s the most requested add-on to any cyberpunk game, so I’m adding it to the list right now before anyone requests it. (I want it, too!) Elf and Ork, Dwarf and Troll! Spell casters and spirit summoners! It’s all here!
I wanted to run a mashup of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Pirates of the Caribbean for the home group but we went with something else. vs. DAVY JONES updates vs. PIRATES to create that game – the Age of Piracy where all the legends are true. Cursed ships and treasure! Unearthly monsters and villains! It’s all here!
It's no longer an invasion: now it's war. Up the stakes in vs. MARS with vs. ALIEN OVERLORDS. Fight in the cities against the aliens, lead the insurgency in occupied Earth, or take the fight back to the red planet. More invaders! More plots! More guns! It's all here, too!
A note on the above expansions: if a vs. game's expansion stretch goal is reached, it automatically comes with that vs. game.
Once we hit this goal, every backer gets a printable pdf copy of the vs. game(s) they choose as a reward, including the expansions!
While I have illustration assets that work well with vs. MIRRORSHADES and decent ones for the others, at this level I can add some better and more-thematic artwork to the other vs. games. (Needless to say, all artwork shown is not final.)
It is a time of civil war in vs. EMPIRE. Become a new force of hope in the galaxy as your rebellion strikes back against a tyrannical empire. Outnumbered by the menace of the Galactic Empire, rebels fight for a return of freedom to oppressed people everywhere. You are a hero. You are the Rebellion!
Yes, you can play a space wizard with a laser sword.
Shipping within the United States is factored into the reward levels. Printed material will be placed into a bubble mailer envelope with DO NOT BEND stamped on the outside and shipped through the USPS.
As an individual creator and given the size and weight of the final product, it is extremely cost-prohibitive to ship outside the United States. There will be no shipping outside the United States. I wish I could – I mean, hell, Canada is right up the road from me – but the cost alone for shipping these small letters internationally is insulting to everyone. Sorry, my international friends.
Hey there! Here’s the standard bio I’ve been using and modifying as time marches ever onward:
Thomas Deeny is a graphic designer who specializes in book layout and game design. His layout work can be found in roleplaying games like John Wick Presents' 7th Sea, Atlas Games' Unknown Armies and Over the Edge, MCDM Production's Strongholds and Followers, and Modiphius Entertainment’s Star Trek Adventures. His work on boardgames include WIBAI's Pathogenesis, AEG’s Nightfall and Tempest line of games, and Tasty Minstrel Games' Cthulhu Realms. He lives in a house in the middle of a spooky forest at the edge of civilization.
Risks and challenges
While I have been an official collaborator on seven projects and an unofficial collaborator on seven others (including the 7th Sea, Second Edition Kickstarter campaign) this is the first campaign I have created on my own. My roles on those other campaigns allowed me access to planning and strategy sessions behind several of the fourteen. I have taken that background (and the advice of some colleagues who have launched their own) to help avoid common pitfalls. It is my belief that most of the major challenges and risks encountered by a first-time creator have been avoided or minimized.
I am an individual who will be packaging envelopes and taking them to the post office. Everything should ship on schedule, but things can go wrong with shipping. Because it’s just me doing this, unexpected life emergencies could delay fulfillment of promised rewards.
At launch, all three core vs. games and two expansions have been written, laid out, and have had digital proofs created. vs. ALIEN OVERLORDS is being written. Upgrading the artwork for the vs. games and expansions are dependent on hitting that "more art" goal. If we hit any “and then...” stretch goal, those games will have to be written and laid out. (One is already written but needs to be trimmed down to fit into this format.)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
