From Silence To Symphony - A Documentary Web Series on Composing, Start to Finish, will consist of five short episodes (ca. 10-15 minutes each) following the creation of my first symphony, from first sketch to first performance. We plan on delivering the episodes in monthly instalments building up to the symphony’s premiere in March 2018. Along with the main symphonic storyline, each episode will also introduce and focus on another contemporary composer, as we travel Europe to dive into the minds and methods of composers of various ages and backgrounds. We’re going to demystify the world of contemporary classical music, finding out what it takes to fill an empty page and open the door to a symphony.
Being a composer, some of the questions I get asked most are: “how do you hear a whole orchestra in your head?” and “where do you get your ideas?” and the always wonderful “composers still exist?”
This documentary web series will be a lighthearted and inspiring journey to discover the processes of composing and give people everywhere an insight into our world, as we take silence and bring it to life.
I am currently the Copenhagen Phil’s composer-in-residence, and as my next project with the orchestra I am composing my first symphony, to premiere in March 2018. Whenever I sit and work on figuring out the babysteps needed to develop ideas and fashion them into anything from intimate whispers to large-scale musical structures, I find myself wanting to share this process in a meaningful and entertaining way.
Speaking with audiences I often come across questions like the ones above and sense a mystified wonder at how music comes to be. I can’t help but think that there is genuine curiosity out there for how something so seemingly abstract and indefinite can be pieced together, where we begin and how we end.
We composers don't all walk the same path and I share the curiosity for how other composers find their own way. Therefore, along with following my first symphony’s complete development from first idea to world premiere, I will be taking you around Europe to find out how other composers are concretising their musical visions. Each episode will introduce you to another contemporary composer - their ideas, their methods and their stories.
Throughout the years, I’ve been asked to speak about myself and my music and, whether talking with school children, holding seminars at conservatories and universities or introducing concerts, I’ve found that my own open and humorous nature can serve as a real barrier-breaker for those that consider classical music somewhat of a closed-off environment.
What The Funding Will Go Towards
The Film Crew - We’ve got the music taken care of! But to get a movie made it takes a dedicated group of individuals who all work in their respective fields to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts. We’ll be updating you as our crew grows to let you know the faces behind the scenes that will be involved in telling these stories.
Travel - The series will take us around Europe, where we will meet composers of different generations and get their individual takes on creating music. But we need to get there first.
Graphic Design & Animation - The hope is for this series to be a window into the mind of contemporary composers and music. We don’t want this window to only be open to the few of us who already feel at home with classical music so a great amount of time and effort will be put into using visual imagery, hand in hand with sound, to communicate the methods of creating music in a modern and enlightening way.
The Composers - Composers need to eat, too.
Equipment Rental - Wouldn’t it be great if we assembled the best crew we could get our hands on but nobody thought to bring a camera…or gaffer tape..?
Post-Production - Let’s bring it all together.
We hope we've managed to convey our excitement and enthusiasm for this project and that it has been contagious. Thanks for your consideration!
Risks and challenges
Scheduling conflicts down the road with the crew could hinder the delivery of monthly episodes, but we will do everything possible to keep the delivery within the monthly range and create a great buildup to the symphony's premiere.
Composers are busy and commissions can come out of thin air, so there may be some unforeseeable changes in the roster of guests. However, we have plenty of backup opportunities so this will not affect the number of episodes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
