Delta Mouth Literary Festival is Baton Rouge’s premier literary event! Each year, we celebrate art and literature by bringing some of the most exciting writers from all over the country.
This year's festival will be held April 3-6 at venues throughout Baton Rouge. Now in our sixth year, we're excited to offer our biggest slate of writers ever!
Here's our confirmed Delta Mouth line-up:
Thursday, 7 p.m. @ Haven Listening Room: ALISSA NUTTING, DONALD DUNBAR, JENNY ZHANG
Friday, 7 p.m. @ LSU French House/Grand Salon: WAYNE KOESTENBAUM, CHRIS CHEEK, SHELLY TAYLOR
Saturday, 6 p.m. @ Baton Rouge Gallery: BEN MARCUS, IRAKLI KAKABADZE, OLIVIA CRONK, DOROTHEA LASKY
Sunday, 2 p.m. @ TBA: PAUL LEGAULT, ABE SMITH, CHRIS MERKNER
Since Delta Mouth’s inception in 2009, this volunteer run effort is completely free and open to the public. This can only happen through the generous donations of lit lovers like you!
Every dollar we raise goes to:
- Fly out and put up the writers! (That’s pretty key.)
- Pay the rental fees for the reading and performance venues, as well as A/V costs.
- Supplement the readings with other things people like: food, drinks, music, and art! (Yeah, this festival is free. Can you believe it?)
- Invite all of Louisiana to attend through clever marketing strategies known as “posters” and “print ads.”
You might notice that it doesn’t say “pay our staff” anywhere. We care passionately about bringing free arts events to the Louisiana public, but we can't see our plans through without your support.
Many folks have offered accommodations to visiting writers, as well as other critical contributions. If you are in a position to offer any form of in-kind support, we welcome your donation! Please email through our website.

Risks and challenges
As festival organizers, it is a joy to contribute to our community, creating totally open-access opportunities for all to experience new literary performance art. It is a joy to extend invitations to writers from all over the country, each coming from a different background to share a unique creative practice.
Each year, we rely entirely on volunteers and grassroots fundraising tactics such as Kickstarter to raise all of the funds necessary to bring artists into our community. We face challenges due to the economy in general, and due to state budget cuts that directly affect our colleagues and friends at LSU.
We have grown each year, from a two-day program to this year's four-day festival, featuring sixteen visiting artists.
In addition to fundraising and liasing to bring artists to Baton Rouge, we challenge ourselves to reach people throughout Louisiana and the larger region.
We are dedicated to serving both our geographical community and our artistic community, across all lines of class, place, color, age, and gender! We operate with this in mind on all levels, offering our free events events in non-traditional venues in different neighborhoods around the city, and utilizing all forms of media at our disposal to first garner necessary support, and then to spread the invitation on the wind so that it will reach all potential comers!
