This game is an action RPG about strengthening the bonds you already have with the friends in your gaming group, or forming new bonds of friendship, in the face of shared adversity and the greatest challenge. Nothing beats the thrill of coming together to defeat a seemingly insurmountable foe. 5TDM doesn't pull any punches. It puts you through the wringer and lets your group emerge closer to each other than ever. It is competitive, but not toxic.
Small groups of player characters are pitted against each other in a no-holds-barred frenzy of carnage in a team-based, player-vs-player competition. 5th Edition Team Deathmatch is a contest of skill, wits, and luck. 5TDM is about winning the world's most popular roleplaying game.
THIS GAME IS FINISHED! We are running this Kickstarter campaign in order to raise funds for editing, layout, final art, and printing. Backers will receive the fully playable rough draft documents at the very start of the campiagn.
THE GAME IS AMAZING! We've been doing this kind of team deathmatch since 2011, hosting many live tournaments from small shops to the grandeur of GenCon. We are the original auteurs - this Kickstarter will help give us a spotlight on a more grand stage to show you what wonders we've accomplished.

The mission of Defy Danger is to intensify your gaming experience at the table by pushing the boundaries of what is possible in a tabletop roleplaying game. This project takes the feel of platform fighting games, online games, tactical war games, and competitive team vs. team exercises and brings it to the worlds most popular roleplaying game. We have developed a core ruleset with twenty deadly arenas that challenge player and team alike. This product also includes a series of hard-earned tips on character creation, tactics, running tournament, and how to design your own deadly arena.
With your backing, we will deliver a product that will make you rethink what is possible at the table, and fuel the competitive juices within. The design of 5TDM has been put through the fires and is now ready for prime time. You can help us make our dream of this multiplayer RPG game a reality by backing this Kickstarter, allowing us the funds to produce this in a professional way.
WHAT YOU GET

5TDM is inspired by the heart-pounding action of many popular video games and other media franchises put into the form of a new RPG game. Where it elevates beyond the confinements of a video game or board game is the room for creativity and design provided by tabletop roleplaying games. 5TDM also serves as a crucible where you and your closest friends face the utmost trial - a rival adventuring team. This project allows excited referees the tools needed to run their own 5TDM matches, tournaments, and advise on how to start creating new arenas of their own.
The project will deliver:
- Introduction to the style of gaming 5TDM heralds
- Character creation rules designed to maximize both fun and carnage
- Double-page full-color cartography of twenty (20) hellscape arenas of death, along with full page rules. Total. Brutal.
- Speaking of arenas, totally gonzo over-the-top locations that bend the existing rules in new and creative ways; for example, an arena of ricochet pinball pseudo-physics
- Strategy guidance on each arena
- Guidance on running individual matches as well as full-scale tournaments
- Instructions on how best to design your own fighting arena
- Pre-Generated characters as guidelines for solid deathmatch strategy
5TDM is much more nuanced and challenging than simple one-on-one duels. It requires a deep understanding of the core ruleset, strong teamwork and communication skills, and an unending thirst for blood.
Fast, frantic play is encouraged. Dungeoneers deemed to be stalling, delaying, or in any way slowing the game will be killed at the referee's decree.
Tournaments consist of individual encounters called matches. Each match lasts between 45 to 60 minutes. At the end of every match, the number of dungeoneer deaths will be tallied, and the team with the least number of deaths will be declared the winner. Tournaments typically are ladder bracket style and consist of three different maps that highlight different character features or builds.
Death is not the end in 5TDM. Dead (aka “Gibbed”) player characters respawn to come back in on their next turn to take revenge on their enemies and even the score. It is an unending struggle of violence and pain.
Each player’s turn lasts only a minute or so in real-time. Focus is needed on everyone else’s turn to plan ahead in a constantly shifting tactical environment. Players who dilly-dally and waste time are punished for delaying the game.
Pre-made arenas provide unique situations to afford players tactical opportunities to wreak havoc on other players, or gain boons for themselves and/or their allies. Arenas will each have their own special rules, forcing players to develop a deeper level of strategy in order to take advantage of each map they expect to compete on.
The heart of 5TDM is the innovative ways it puts forth for teams to do battle.
Slaughterhouse.A two-level meatgrinder full of nailgun turrets and unstoppable conveyors feeding a central pit of serrated blades.
Dead Simple. The no-frills arena, an opportunity to show off true tactical skill in a minimalist setting.
The Citadel. A dread fortress, home to the armory holding the fabled intelligent sword Blackrazor, and an array of powerful siege weaponry.
Run! A never-ending race through trap gauntlets with bizarre doors and portals.
Collapse. Floating above the Elemental Chaos, this icy arena falls apart in the heart of battle, plunging the combatants into the bottomless abyss below.
Retroverse Arcade. Dungeoneers dial it back to the 80's and plunk a few more quarters into the machine. Wakka-wakka-wakka-wakka!
Pinball Wizard. You’re a wizard. A pinball wizard. Grab an extra ball to keep your allies up as you slam tilt your enemies into the great unknown below the flippers.
Dhakaan Hegemony. The battle over the Lost Crown of Tesh-Naga rages eternally over the treasure hoard of Tiamat, the Dragon Goddess of Greed.
Court of the Storm Lord. The stormlord Xann, god of the skies, rules over this windswept temple. Are you strong enough to control the storms and strike down thy foes?
Team Fortress. In a realm of disorder and horror, we find teams of gladiators. They fight over mystical flags, through a red and blue haze of constant reincarnation.
Lethal Conflict. An homage to the fighting games of the early 90s, this arena pits dungeoneers on a mutable 2D stage ready to chop, kick, flip, and stab their enemies.
Tomb of the Iron Lich. Deep inside the mithril-forged catacombs, Kaldun the Artificer-Paladin Lich pits adventurers against each other in a fight to the death amidst its Souldriver Four-Armed Iron Golem and the dreaded Deck of Mortals.
SMASH. It’s side-scrolling platform mayhem! Jockey over minimal ground, smash each other into the void, and avoid the shifting planar manifestations.
Death Wyverns Crucible. Eight slabs of black marble jut from a lake of hissing dracolisk bile that surrounds this vast wrought-iron crucible. Pieces of bone float gingerly on the surface. A toxic mist hangs around the cages. Winged shadows shriek and circle overhead.
Ambulatory of Sorrow by Sersa Victory. Deep within the Abyss lairs the Succubus Queen, the most fecund of all demons. Run and slay as fast as you can or be nourishment for her next brood.
Vault of the Spider Queen. They who incubate the dark egg of the underworld gain the blessings of the Demonweb Pits, but at a perilous cost.
Astral Ambush. In the grim darkness of the astral sea, there is only death. Grab a plasma rifle fight the invading boarding party. Don't get sucked into the cold void of space!
Strike The Earth. Deep in the adamantium mines, ride the fast-moving minecart and arm yourself with weapons of the highest craft-dwarf-ship to win the day ere the werebeasts get hungry.
Mutiny on the Hellstrider by Roving Band of Misfits. Arrr, me mateys! Sail upon the magma sea and fight over control of the HMS Hellstrider!
Terror Core. A hex-based fight crawling on the walls of a radioactive nuclear core meltdown. Random mutations twist players' character sheets in unpredictable, devastating ways.
5TDM has been in development for several years and has been extensively playtested. To bring this amazing, blood-pumping action to the next level, we need your backing. Your pledges will be used to elevate Team Deathmatch to a real product and the fulfillment of our years-long dreams.
Editing. The game text, including rules for all twenty arenas, is complete. At the completion of the Kickstarter, we will bring Jon Green, author of Edge of the Frontier, as the editor.
Art. Brandon Reinert, artist for titles such as Crush the Rebellion, Eternal Serpent Tower, and The Fortune Teller's Guide to Deathtrap Design, is at the ready to flesh out the nightmare visions of our authors onto the page. This will help us better communicate the fire and fury that is the heart of 5TDM games.
If the game funds, Brandon will be able to complete the art for the book.
Printing. If it funds, the project will be printed as an Executive size style book, with color printing, casewrap binding, 80# paper, and glossy finish, for distribution to backers at the Hurt Me Plenty level and above.
Arenas will also be printed on seperate 11"x17", full color, double-sided cardstock, for distribution to backers at the Ultra-Violence level and above.
Shipping of physical rewards is to Canada and the United States only.
If the project funds, we will be able to offer an online tournament of the game at the start of 2019. This will feature up to sixteen (16) teams of four (4) players each, with the winning team earning physical trophies. This is your chance to prove to the world that you and your friends are the best, that you are masters of this game, that luck is on your side, and that fortune favors the bold. This tournament will be recorded and made public via Twitch for the entire world to see and adore. Winners will have their choice of trophy style:
5th Edition Team Deathmatch is poised to be the forefront of a new and unique way to experience tabletop roleplaying games through eSports. With your help, this Kickstarter can be the spark the lights the fire on a new chapter of RPG games online. We at Defy Danger are already in plans to take 5TDM into the realm of competitive eSports with additional tournaments and other sanctioned events. This is a major watershed moment in tabletop RPGs and your chance to catch the wave early.
This is also the moment where we decide the discourse of this medium as the shining point of light standing against the toxic elements of this realm. 5TDM pledges to be the premier example of good sportsmanship and welcoming inclusiveness in eSports.
After the initial wave of activity of the Kickstarter, Defy Danger plans on releasing additional developed arenas that did not make the first cut for the book. Keep an eye out for an arena expansion pack, to include some classic deathmatch arenas such as Tower of Babel, and new arenas currently in development!
Risks and challenges
There are very little risks here. Our design team has years of experience with this type of gaming with great success, available on DriveThruRPG. We are also the originators of this style of tabletop deathmatch, going back to GenCon tournaments from 2011-2013.
This Kickstarter serves as a source of funding to bring us to the next level in terms of presentation and professional quality. Rules and rough drafts of all artwork, including maps, are already finished and will be distributed to backers immediately. We are using a reputable printing shop whom we have used in the past on other projects and do not expect any problems.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
