About this project
Deep Recovery is a small Boulder, Colorado based company obsessed with bringing you world class recovery tools and techniques. We launched on Kickstarter in 2014 with this project and you can read a summary of our backer comments here.
Early this year, we changed our name from Massage Track to Deep Recovery and that's why we're launching this project with a new Kickstarter account. As you can see most of our products still carry our old logo. Old or new logo, all our products come with a money-back guarantee and lifetime warranty, because they're great quality and we care about YOU!
This project launches our newest product - a set of 4 Inch massage balls designed for large muscle groups like the shoulders, chest, back, glutes, and hamstrings. Please note, we offer free instructional video to all, on our website.
They're made from EVA and the pair weighs 3.2 ounces / 90.7 grams. They come in a mesh bag so you can easily use them separately or together.
How to get them
Become a backer of this project and pick a reward. You will essentially be pre-ordering from us. You'll get a special backer discount, and you'll receive your 4 Inch ball set before it is available anywhere else. Your shipping information and any other specifics will be collected via survey after this campaign has ended.
Our FIRST 500 backers get EARLY delivery (August or September).
When our tools are used following the techniques in our free instructional videos, our customers often tell us they experience immediate benefits. This is what our users love about the Deep Recovery tools (short and long term):
Restores the normal loose fluidity of your fascia and eliminates pain through self-myofascial release.
Gets More Done, Faster
More targeted than a foam roller, these balls allow you to reach in and release the specific tight muscles and tissues causing you pain and restricting your mobility. But, they are also larger than the business end of massage tools with knobs, which allows you to get the work done you need, much faster.
Helps return your muscles to their relaxed state after an intense workout -- shown to reduce the risk of injuries.
Improves Range of Motion
Releases muscle knots and constricted fascia so you can move more freely and restore flexibility.
At the end of a long stressful day, your muscles are tight and begging for release. You may drift off while releasing your neck or lower back...
Balance is key to healthy body mechanics and all our tools are designed to work bilaterally. Every massage ball set comes with a mesh bag for this reason and our tracks are also designed with multiple bilateral spacing options. The tracks also allow you to apply pressure from an angle which you don't get from the mesh bags.
Our project video contains excerpts taken from these videos:
Researchers at McMaster University reported that massage following an intense workout actually causes muscles to enlarge and grow new mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells and are responsible for converting nutrients into useful energy.
For an athlete, energy is everything.
The study found that deep-tissue massage increased the size and number of new mitochondria more than exercising without massage. Increasing mitochondria can improve endurance performance by increasing the rate that muscles utilize oxygen.
To the body, oxygen is everything.
The McMaster University study also found that massage therapy increases the range of motion in muscles and decreases recovery time between workouts or athletic events.
Massage is beneficial to more than muscles
Muscles might be the richest benefactors of a massage, but, most people report a feeling of pure relaxation, reduced anxiety, enhanced attentiveness, and improved mood following a massage.
Athletes may find an edge in these psychological benefits, making massage a double-duty treatment; a mind and body therapy. Various bodies of research compiled by the National Center for Biotechnology Information indicate that massage therapy:
- Reduces heart rate. Lowers blood pressure.
- Reduces recovery time after an injury.
- Rehabs an injury. Lowers anxiety.
- Improves mood.
- Increases blood flow throughout the body, bringing vital oxygen and nutrients all over.
- Relieves muscle pain and tension.
- Improves connective tissue healing, which promotes muscle elasticity.
- Stabilizes cortisol levels (a stress hormone, similar to adrenaline).
- Improves muscle flexibility, which reduces and prevents injury.
- Improves the quality of sleep.
Everybody can choose one (and only one) reward level to back this project. You cannot choose 2 reward levels. Just one. You will get all items in that reward—you cannot swap things that you don't want for things that you do want. See the FAQ for why we can't do this.
Our first Kickstarter project was in 2014, so we have an established supply chain and quite a bit of experience delivering top-quality massage tools over the past three years. All molds have been made long ago and we've laid in some inventory so we can deliver rewards to our first 500 backers early, as in August to September.
We plan to deliver rewards to backers after the first 500 starting in January, but if we can deliver sooner, we will!!
It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention. I learned this firsthand suffering from Lyme disease for the last 15 years which, among other “nuisances,” causes tightness in the muscles and connective tissues.
Any repetitive motion like walking or typing can give me tendinitis, and before inventing the Deep Recovery (formerly Massage Track) massage tools, I would sometimes pull a muscle just getting out of bed in the morning. I lived with pain for 15 years before I finally became desperate during the spring of 2012. I had pulled a muscle in my lower back, and normally, I heal in a few days, but this time, three weeks went by and I was getting worse.
My normal routine for dealing with a muscle pull (foam rolling and gentle yoga) wasn’t working and my back pain was interfering with my work, so I went in for a couple rolfing sessions a month later. Rolfing is a type of bodywork which I had found helpful in the past. And while the first two rolfing sessions were useful, especially in identifying the culprit muscle (quadratus lumborum) and the specific therapy that would heal me, I had already spent $250 and was still having difficulty driving and sitting in an office chair.
I felt certain another ten Rolfing sessions focusing on the inflamed muscles and the surrounding areas would heal me completely, but I didn’t have the money for it. I knew daily massage would also provide healing (I mean, if it works for professional athletes, it would work for me, too, right?), but again, financially, that was out of reach.
That’s when the idea for Deep Recovery came to me–when I absolutely needed an immediate, cost-effective way to heal. I’ve used the system almost every day since I invented it, and have not had a serious muscle pull since. Occasionally I’ll feel tightness somewhere but after rolling with the Body Track, it’s gone.
I spent two years developing our deep tissue massage tools, gathering feedback from experts, and launching the first Kickstarter project 3 years ago. The response from around the world has been very exciting and today my massage tools are in 40 countries.
As you probably know, having a massage therapist work on you can do wonders, but really, it's critical to scratch the itch right away—not next Tuesday at 1 PM. And, what I’ve discovered is that giving yourself therapy early, when you first feel tightness, prevents a muscle pull from happening in the first place.
My body has been the ideal sandbox from which to develop world-class massage tools (and techniques). When I think about all the people who have told me they’re using my massage tools every day, I feel blessed. I love helping people heal and getting the best performance their bodies are capable of delivering!
We believe crowdfunding is the best way to bring new products to life and that it's not just for starting a business, it’s for growing a business too.
Kickstarter connects creators directly with customers who share their passion. As a 100% crowdfunded company, the only “board of directors” we listen to is our backer and customer base. We get to spend our time making tools that improve lives - and not spinning our wheels applying for loans or reporting to investors.
A crowdfunding project is a big life event like a wedding with very sharply defined dates which forces you to do planning, preparation and execution that a slow launch doesn’t require and you emerge from it with videos, testimonials, contacts and a customer base some businesses don't achieve with five years or more of operation.
And above all, the Kickstarter community is golden, truly a special group! This is why we hope to bring one or two new recovery tools to Kickstarter every year.
Risks and challenges
This is Deep Recovery's 2nd Kickstarter project. We've got some great experience under our belts on how to manufacture high-quality goods and fulfill orders for them. We've also been blindsided before by unexpected issues and always dealt with them in a way that leaves every last customer happy with their purchase and proud to support our company.
In short, we have a few years experience doing this, and you should be confident that we will deliver what we say we will, as fast as we can. We experienced a lengthy delay in our first project (as most do when launching a new business) and have taken steps to avoid a repeat.
And should unforeseen issues come up, we will handle them with the utmost transparency and care for you, our backers.
Supply Chain Risk: We're happy with our supply chain, and have a lot of confidence that we can make what we say we'll make. But sometimes shipping containers of product get stuck outside a shipyard for 3 weeks. We pad our schedule for these unknowns, but sometimes not enough...Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
