About

The 9/11 Ground Zero Virtual Reality Museum

Many heroes took place in the 9/11 rescue efforts but an unseen hero was the "bathtub" of the World Trade Center. Originally built in 1969, the foundation "bathtub" walls were essentially the only structure that survived that day. Even though they were severely damaged, the foundation walls were re-stabilized and the rescue crews were able to go down. My name is Dimitrios Konstantakos, and had a small role in the rescue efforts as young engineer.

We can now capture the experience of the original construction site, the experience of what the WTC site felt like in the 1969 days, in virtual or augmented reality. Time is running out though, we can still talk to some of the engineers that lived through the original construction but not for much longer.

My dream is that we capture the experience of what Ground Zero looked like during the original construction in a Virtual Reality Museum. If we reach our dream goal, we can also capture that experience with augmented reality headsets. This is our way of paying homage, and preserving the memory.

What will you do?

We have already developed virtual reality experiences for underground construction and have won an award for innovation in 2018. We will expand upon the developed toolkits and reconstruct different stages of construction for the WTC bathtub in a virtual reality environment. Using a time track, the VR museum visitors will be able to step at any point in time and experience the site in real scale. These will include illustrations with construction equipment, reconstructing the original site and more, all depending on the level of funding that we achieve.

How will you do it?

We will base the VR museum on an existing Virtual/Augmented Reality platform that we have developed at my company Deep Excavation LLC (www.deepexcavation.com). We will put together historical plans, site images, site drawings, and personal interviews to match the historical conditions as much as possible. Graphical art quality will depend on the level of funding that will be achieved.

Why is your team qualified to do it?

Our team has already received an innovation award for visualizing underground construction. Our CEO has worked in the WTC recovery efforts, is a widely recognized expert in the field, he also serves as the chair of the Technical Coordination Council of the Geo-Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and he also serves as an Adjunct professor at the Civil Engineering Department of New York University.

Why should we back you?

This will be the first virtual reality museum of it's kind, but more important we will be honoring all that served in the efforts. Building such an experience costs as much as developing a small game.

How will you use the funds?

We will hire graphical artists and VR experts to work alongside. Target funding levels:

Level 1, $45,000: Basic virtual reality model of the bathtub original construction

Level 2, $150,000: Expanded modelling and added reality elements

Level 3, $275,000: Top quality graphics, more detailed interactions,

Dream target: $500,000+  augmented reality experiences for mobile phones

How long will the project last?

We anticipate that we will be able to deliver the museum in approximately one year.

Will you charge an admission fee?

No, we will make the museum free for everyone. We will accept donations for maintaining the experience to the latest standards. We will also be donating the VR museum experience to the physical Ground Zero Museum.

Any last words?

This is our way of paying homage to all that served and keeping the memory alive.

We hope you can join us!

Truly yours,

Dimitrios Konstantakos, P.E.

Risks and challenges

The challenge will be in achieving a realistic experience. We will utilize our own resources to a great extend but we can realistically achieve outstanding results if we hit our Level 2 target or above.
