About this project
Ducklings is a sanguine but rewarding game about loss, empathy, cooperation, family, love, and partnership. As a player, you must work together with your partner to safely move your three baby ducklings to a new home.
However, the path between the two bodies of water is a dangerous place where no bird is surely safe-- where parents will be lucky if one of the two parents makes it to their new home with a single duckling alive!

Each family consisting of two parents are the caretakers of three baby duckling cards. Parents share a responsibility to supervise and keep their ducklings safe. Families start at opposite bodies of water, with one beginning at the lake and the other at the pond, both with the goal of getting to the other side.
On a turn, a parent rolls a die. They move up to the amount of spaces they rolled, and then choose an event card to land on. They will flip this card over and read it's effects.
Each event card has two options. The parent must choose one of the two options. They may consult their partner on what to do, but it is ultimately their choice. Some biomes can cause harm to the ducklings.
When harm comes to the ducklings, an affliction token must be placed on the card. If three afflictions are placed on a duckling, both parents must flip the card so that the picture is face down. This card is now out of play, and the parents must read out loud the text on the back of the card.
If all of the ducklings in your family are flipped, you lose. The family with the most ducklings left alive at the end of the game wins.
More Interesting Mechanics:
- Each duckling has a unique talent that can only be used once in the game.
- The die you use corresponds to the amount of Ducklings you have. The more ducklings you have waddling behind you, the slower you are able move.
- A territorial duck fight will occur if two parents of different families land on the same space. When this happens, both families suffer an affliction.
- Once both parents from one family reach their new home, the Winter Season begins, where the remaining family suffers one affliction at the start of each of their parents turns.
- "1 Copy of The Game" consists of all the items shown above.
- With 2 copies of the game, you can play with up to 8 players!

Additionally the first 25 funders to fund $60 will get their hands on exclusive, high quality, 3D printed hand painted duck miniatures! Shipping prices for all tiers are estimated based on prior projects and our pricing model from our distributor. They are not exact.
All the money you donate will go directly towards handling the manufacturing, shipping, and distribution of the game. It will cost $7,260 to manufacture the game with Ad Magic Inc, the best quote we could find for a high quality product. We have partnered with Quartermaster Logistics to handle the distribution of the game. Both companies have extensive experience fulfilling Kickstarter projects.
Additionally, money will be allocated to fulfilling reward tier and stretch goal prizes such as creating and painting custom 3D duck miniatures, increasing card sizing to tarot-sized cards, changing affliction tokens to possibly cardboard pieces, and funds in case distribution costs rise.
We arrived at an $8,000 goal to cushion errors in manufacturing and distribution. For specific custom reward tier games, manufacturing costs can rise up to $30 per each box through the GameCrafter.
Is shipping included with the reward tier, or is it charged after the Kickstarter launches?
Shipping is included in the reward tier. We need to calculate our final shipping costs once we figure out how many units have been sold, but the shipping number next to the reward tier is the maximum shipping cost we will charge. Your shipping price will never increase past what you paid on your initial pledge.
If our actual shipping costs go down, we will cover the difference with additional project items or will be happy to reimburse people over Paypal. We apologise for any confusion caused due to the wording on the reward tier.
Hey guys! We're Tim, James, and Aimee. We met in college (August 2016) and ever since then we've been non-stop making games together. In October 2016 we started working on Ducklings, and in January 2017 we participated in the USC chapter of Global Game Jam and won the Judge's Choice Best Overall Game Award. We all love each other as teammates and see each other everyday to work on Ducklings. We're like a little family, all sharing the dream of one day becoming great, successful game designers.
We care deeply about the play experience of our users. With the game Ducklings we've done over 114 playtests, where we actually set the game down in front of strangers and allowed them to give blind feedback. We've iterated upon the game multiple times to make sure it's perfect, and emulates the themes of love, family, parenting, responsibility, empathy, and coping effectively.
No matter what happens, even if we don't reach our goal, we promise to continue working hard to make the best play experiences for you. We're just poor, hungry, human, and we love you.

Risks and challenges
This isn't our first game, but this is our first time crowd-funding a game.
However, we have never been more prepared. This game is ready: it’s been through over 116 rigorous playtests, 56 customer discoveries, 3 business competitions, 2 renowned year-length game design workshop classes, and even reviews from critics and game designers deep in the industry. We’ve done all the research and planning, we know our schedule, and we have ensured over 3 different manufacturers.
We will continue to give all updates on production and manufacturing and be as transparent as possible about the process.
