"The thrill of finding a structure neglected for decades is incredible. We want to capture that feeling of walking into a building, where time has stood still for half a century, its rotting walls reclaimed by nature, local artists, and the surrounding community." -Anonymous urban explorer from our team
What our Project is About:
Our city; Richmond, Virginia is changing. Old buildings are being renovated or torn down and turned into apartments and parking lots. We do not want the art, culture, and history inside these buildings to be forgotten. This documentary encompasses the experience of urban exploration, urban decay and abandonment.
Our project began on the foundation of DIY, but as the film developed, our personal resources have been depleted. We need help to bring this documentary to life.
We sit here at a turning point in the project. As students, we have put as much monetarily we could into the project from our own pockets. We have currently taken the term broke college students to a new level. Hours upon hours every week are spent exploring, seeking out other explorers in the community, shooting, and editing.
To get this project finished and up to our standards, we need $3000 to purchase mounting/stabilization equipment, sound equipment, and to finish shooting the film. Any pledge amount will help us as we pursue our vision of finishing this project and every pledge amount receives a reward.
Keep an eye on this page for updates on the documentary. We will be posting photo updates on the film on our website almost daily.

Why Should I Support This Project?
We've put the past 9 months of our lives, along with every penny of extra money from our wallets, piggy banks, and vacation jars into this film.
Every time we go in these buildings, we risk injury to ourselves and our equipment, to show you the underlying beauty inside of these structures before they are gone forever.
Most of the money we are spending on the film is going to be spent locally. Keeping our business local is very important to us.
What Can I Expect to See in the Film?
Expect to see numerous moving images of the beautiful interiors of these buildings. Urban exploration in action is another large part of the film. There will be interviews from local artists/photographers, musicians, urban explorers, city officials, and even police officers. All of the music from the film will be from local musicians.
What are You Spending My Money On?
We need it specifically for camera mounting/stabilization equipment, professional sound gear, some portable lighting, renting the theater for the premiere, editing software, and hard drives for storage.
And of course funding your reward!
What Happens After the Film is Completed?
Our friends at Sink Swim Press, a local publishing company here in Richmond, will be pressing and distributing DVD copies of the film. The release pressing will be a special edition.
If the response to Decayed Richmond is great enough, there could be a "Decayed Virginia" Film in the works.
What is Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is an online threshold pledge system for funding creative projects, also known as “crowd-funding.”
For every pledge of support we offer a reward, so please check out our rewards over there on the right.
Please remember, we do not get ANY funding if we do not meet our goal. Please help us make sure this doesn't happen. On the other end, it is possible for us to raise more than our goal - the more support the better.
How Do I Pledge?
To pledge to a project, just click the green “Back This Project” button on our project page. You will be asked to enter your pledge amount and select a reward. From there, you will go through the Amazon checkout process.
If I Make a Pledge, When am I Charged?
Straight from the Kickstarter.com FAQ's: If the project you’re backing is successfully funded, your card will be charged when the project reaches its funding deadline. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is never charged. That is why we call them pledges.
If Funding Does Not Succeed Do Backers Pay Anything?
Nope. If funding fails, all pledges are canceled. We hope this doesn't happen, but we just wanted to reassure you.
What Song is Playing in the Videos Up there?
Shy, Low - Heavy Hands. Check them out, pick up their 6 song digital album. If you are into heavier influenced ambient instrumental jams, this band is for you.
