I’m Debra Mann. I'm a jazz vocalist, pianist, performer, and songwriter, based out of New England. I also teach jazz voice at Brown University, Wheaton College, and at my home studio (voice and piano) in RI.
I’m really excited to record a new CD of the music of Joni Mitchell. For the past five years, I've been performing her music with my band, with unique arrangements that express our jazz sensibilities, while still keeping intact the original feeling and intent behind each song. Audiences have been overwhelmingly receptive, and we've noticed a profound effect that touches them, and us, in a deep way.
I’ve had an enduring admiration for Joni Mitchell since I was a teenager. In fact, it was her music that inspired me to become a professional musician. Performing and recording her music these many years later is completing a full circle for me, and inspired the project’s title.
Since the release of my last CD, Home, I’ve been homeschooling my sons, while balancing gigs and teaching, in between. It’s been a journey of love and learning. Now, I’m ready to focus my creative energy on recording, once again.
THE BASIC PLAN
With your help, I plan to go into the studio with my band this summer to record this beautiful music to share with you, our fans, as well as reach a broader audience.
A recording project is a pricey endeavor, so I’m sharing this with you in the hope that you will be interested in the opportunity to help move this project forward. Being supported by people that I know and care about means the world to me.
Be a part of this project with me. Take a look at the awesome rewards that I’ve put together on the right side of this page. Select one that most inspires you and become a backer, today!

Initial Goal - $6500 . . . (Funded!)
Although the total budget for the project is $24,000, my initial goal of $6,500 will cover expenses for recording and mixing six songs with the full band, as well as paying the musicians. I will also be investing some of my own money that I've been squirreling away for this purpose.Stretch Goal #1 – $12,000 . . . (Funded! On to stretch goal #2!)
These funds will be used to record four additional songs (for a total of ten) to make a full length CD. It will cover costs for additional studio time (studio engineer, mixing, and mastering), the musicians and, ultimately, produce a finished product that will bring a deep warmth and beauty to the recording. It is really a game changer for the project.
Stretch Goal #2 – $16,000 . . . (BACKERS NEEDED!!)
These funds will cover costs for album artwork, CD manufacturing, and mechanical licenses (which are fees paid directly to Joni Mitchell for the use of her songs).
Stretch Goal #3 - $20,000 . . . . . PR Campaign - Radio and Press
This is a HUGE deal. I will be hiring a music promotion firm to get my CD heard on the radio, place stories in blogs, papers, and magazines, and to help me share “Full Circle" with a larger audience, but I can't do it without YOU.
Stretch Goal #4 - $24,000: Website Redesign . . .
Coordinating a redesign of my website with the CD artwork is the final piece of the pie, and will bring it all together to serve as the mouthpiece for the project, and a home for my fans and newcomers to learn more about me and the recording.
Additional Support . . .
Any additional support we receive, above and beyond the total budget, will allow us more time in the recording studio to tweak the smallest details to make the best sounding recording possible.
Note: Kickstarter and credit card fees, as well as reward fulfillment costs, are factored into all of the above figures.

Risks and challenges
I have successfully released three recordings, and am prepared to meet all of the challenges that may arise with this one. I will be collaborating with phenomenal musicians, artists, and friends, recording at a great studio, and doing what I love to do.
Quite frankly, I think the biggest risk might be to my ego, fearing there may not be enough people interested in backing the project, and not succeeding in getting the needed funding. But, as the old saying goes, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”. So, with a song in my heart, a plan in hand, and the support of the many talented individuals surrounding me, I am very excited to forge ahead and realize the vision.
