I want to make a zine about the animals that were sent into space between 1948 and 1969 to study the effects and viability of spaceflight before it was attempted by humans. From dogs to monkeys to rabbits to cats, these guys were unsung heroes and the first real astronauts - help me tell their stories!
What is a zine? It's a small-circulation self-published work (in this case a 28-page booklet) containing original texts and images.
I've already finished drawing and writing the zine. Here are the details:
- 4.5" x 6" (size of the finished booklet)
- 28 pages, black & white printed on cream paper
- 12 featured animals, each one with an astronaut-style portrait and short biography (the list includes: Félicette the cat, Ham the chimp, Marfusha the rabbit, Laika the dog, and more...)
- A brief historical introduction
- A timeline of spaceflight achievements
- A page of real photos of the animals featured
I'm also making an 8.5" x 11" print:
Why Kickstarter? In the past I've always fronted the printing costs myself to make zines & minicomics, which I sell primarily at festivals and online. Honestly I just really like making stuff, but the upfront costs can add up between festivals. I'm using Kickstarter as a pre-order tool so I can cover the printing of the zine and make sure that there are people interested to justify making it!
STRETCH GOALS (ALL UNLOCKED!)
Add-Ons are additional purchases you can make on top of your pledge, which will be shipped to you along with your rewards. To buy either of the pins below, simply add $8 to your pledge* for each pin you'd like to buy. I'll send out surveys after the campaign ends to ask which/how many of each pin you ordered. Right now the $20 and $40 tiers already include 1 pin (in the survey you'll get to choose which one you'd like), but additional pins can be purchased as add-ons if desired!
*Hit the "Manage" button next to your current pledge and add the desired $$ amount to your pledge without changing the reward tier.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter, but I've been printing, selling, and shipping my own zines for a few years now. I'm planning to use a small print shop that I've had experience with before and they've always been great to work with. I'm printing a small quantity and it's a very straightforward job, so there shouldn't be any big issues. In any case, I will make sure you get your zines (and prints)!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
