About this project
Hello friends! Thank you for checking out our Kickstarter page. With your support and involvement, we’re going to continue the long-time tradition of sharing stories through a very unique method of collecting and inspiring them. We will curate a collection of short stories, rants, dreams, hopes, and anything else that our contributors wish to share. All written (on amazing vintage typewriters) and submitted by anyone from cool locations all over the US.
We support a lively human tradition of passing along stories from generation to generation, which throughout time has also contributed to some of them gaining recognition as tall tales. In spirit, it’s about the story and more importantly the way in which the story is told and passed along throughout time. Dear Hank wishes to continue this age-old passion for storytelling by gathering the most well formed and perhaps sundry stories and sharing them in the smartest way possible.
Dear Hank is a shared publishing concept that incorporates storytelling in a written, traditional sense. The idea is that we will place vintage typewriters all over the US in businesses and destinations of interest (Barber Shops, Hotels, Restaurants, Bars), parks (Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park), and any sort of location that people will have a little spare time to type while they are inspired. The typewriters themselves shall spark curiosity as to what and why they are there. Placed next to the typewriter will be a description of the project, a ream of vintage paper, and a return stamped envelope with our address to be mailed and returned to us for consideration to be included in the book. We hope that inspired people will take a minute to share any story they want to share: tall tales, secrets they may wish to finally get off their chest, fictional pieces, a description of the day. . . anything that comes to mind. People are storytellers by nature, it's how we entertain each other. We've reached a day where nearly everything is electronic and fast. We believe the process of manually typing on the vintage typewriters, not having spell check, and not being able to edit easily is a mostly lost but great process that allows the writer to only be concerned with the story or take more time. After all the letters are complied, a selection of stories will be chosen and we will put together a limited run pressing of the book, which shall be limited to 1,000 copies. The books will be off-set in traditional printing and binding methods, hardbound, deckled edge paper, incorporating vintage typesetting methods. We want the book to be as beautiful as the stories that it will contain. We wish to capture spontaneous, written inspiration. The idea, in the end, is to motivate people to stop for a minute and step out of their lives to create something unique while giving the opportunity of reaching a larger audience.
The project is completely not for profit. The 25K needed goes directly into the production and shipping of the book and materials. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please participate.
