“I used to believe the purpose in life is to find happiness. I don’t believe that anymore. I believe we are all given gifts from our Father, and that our purpose is to offer them to Him. He knows how He wants us to use them.” — Francine Rivers, Redeeming Love
Sometimes the most dedicated people, the most inspiring voices, go unheralded and unheard. Talented, hardworking people who show up and give their best day in, day out, often never see a minute in the spotlight.
Dean Newkirk is one of those guys - a regular guy with exceptional, God-given talent who has been pursuing his passion for music on the sidelines for years.
It all started when Dean was seven, watching a Christmas show on TV, then walking over to the piano and plunking out the song he’d just heard. He’d never played piano. Never had a single lesson. But every key he tapped was spot on, and something woke up inside him. A stutterer from a young age, Dean joined the chorus at school the next year and discovered that in music, his speech impediment seemed to disappear. So he began singing and playing and hasn’t stopped since.
Inspired by his Southern Gospel roots, along with big voices in pop/R&B like Peabo Bryson, Luther Vandross and Michael Bolton, Dean spent the better part of a decade performing in school plays, church musicals and at local nursing homes, sharpening his skills on the keyboard and developing his vocal style. But it was while he was in college at UNC Wilmington that Dean discovered his love for and calling to local church ministry. “God knew all along that I was created for ministry through music,” Dean says of the career path that has captivated him. “For over 18 years, I’ve been using the gifts God has given me to minister to people, and all this time it has been the desire of my heart to record an album. People ask me all the time, ‘Do you have an album?’ and the answer has always been ‘No.’ But I’ve given my talent to God, and I believe with all my heart that the time is now.”
So this is where YOU—friends and family and complete strangers alike—come in.
Wouldn’t it be great to see more ‘regular guys,’ more ordinary people with extraordinary talent finally get their moment? Wouldn’t it feel good to see a long-deferred dream come to life? Better still, how great would it be to invest in talent that is used for a greater good, not for fortune or fame, but simply to inspire and change lives?
It takes courage to pursue one’s calling. Courage coupled with prayer and financial provision. So that’s why we’re here on Kickstarter, raising $25,000 to record and produce a first-class, full-length solo album for one of the most talented, unsung artists around —Dean Newkirk.
Check out the pledge rewards in the right hand column and thanks, in advance, for your generous faith and support of this project!
Why should I contribute to this project?
Because you believe in God-given talent and in the power of music to bring hope, grace and encouragement to those who hear it. I’m just an ordinary guy, but I believe God has placed this passion, this gift in me for a purpose. This recording is the fulfillment of that purpose and will be used to help others and glorify Him.
What types of songs will be on this album?
I grew up listening to the hymns of the church and fell in love with the incredible harmonies of The Gaither Vocal Band, the piano masterpieces of Stan Whitmire and many other Southern Gospel groups and musicians. While my heart is deeply rooted in Southern Gospel music, I’ve long been inspired by big voices in pop, jazz, country, R&B and gospel music. The songs on this debut album will introduce you to some brand new melodies and include a fresh approach to several classics that hold great meaning to my life, and I’m super excited to share them with you.
As an independent artist, I have no record label supporting this project financially. The good news is I have the unique opportunity to reach out to friends, family and fans just like you to essentially be my record label.
Major record labels easily spend $50,000 and beyond when producing and promoting a new album. My goal is to use $25,000 to fund licensing, recording, producing and some promotional costs involved with the creation and sales of my album. All songs will be recorded, mixed and mastered by some of the best producers and engineers in the industry and will feature some of Nashville’s best studio and orchestral musicians.

Risks and challenges
With almost 11 years in production coordinating and management in the music business, I have found great value in ensuring that all of the pieces to any project are produced with excellence and released with exceptional quality. While I don't foresee any production or delivery delays, should those arise I believe that communication is key and I am completely up for the challenge and ready to see the finished product come to fruition!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
