About

In 2045, a chance discovery changed the world. The location? Asteroid D-34A, later known as “The Carrier”. During a routine mining mission, engineers from the Braelon Republic stumbled upon something. Something not of our Earth. Braelon was a paranoid nation. Fearing their discovery might be stolen, they kept it to themselves. The craft uncovered was like nothing on Earth; and thanks to its technology thousands of scientific advances came from the Braelon Republic, transforming a once humble nation into the world’s wealthiest. With wealth came power. With power came envy. The Braelons executed spies, and the their leader Duzon secured the border with fearsome weaponry. .. Support the project and witness the story unfold first hand in game.

Play Volaticus with or without an Oculus Rift. Volaticus is designed with VR in mind but works perfectly with out one as well. The feeling you get while in VR is what drove me to build Volaticus.

We humans try to replicate that feeling with airplanes and rockets, but even then you’re just smushed inside a metal cylinder hurtling across the sky. You’re nothing more than meat and guts stuffed into an exploding tin can. But what if one day, you could actually fly?

Hell, if I know. But you can start by strapping yourself into an Oculus Rift and plugging your brain into an out of body experience no human has ever felt before, in my genre-defining flight game Volaticus. Volaticus is an open-world flying shooter that combines the thrill of flight with an action packed story to shoot your way through. You will barrel-roll and skim your ass off mountain tops, all to destroy a horde of brainwashed minions who’ve taken over the world and turned your own parents into a streak of red mess.

You play Rex, a reckless hero who must save the day (and a whole bunch of other days) with the help of an extra-terrestrial rocket-suit. As you rain death and destruction down on your enemies, your reflexes and dexterity will be tested like nothing before. And if saving the world sounds like too much effort, flick over to free flight mode and fly at leisure! It’s your game, your choice!

That is just a taste of my game Volaticus, a flying shooter with a thrilling story and tons of potential, specifically designed for the next generation virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift. (Although it will look equally stunning on a huge kickass widescreen and tablets). I want you to have as much fun playing as I have when I’m testing. But if it’s already going to be awesome, why should you fund this project?

Having funded this game myself and built it entirely from scratch, I now need your help to take it to the next level. While the visuals look nice there is room for improvement. A professional designer and modeler would provide this, giving Volaticus’s visual aesthetic a radical makeover befitting a great 21st Century shooter. You know those TV shows where they take a homeless dude and tidy him up with a haircut and suit? It’s basically that. But fancy.

Gaben Mode...?
Gaben Mode...?

This is the landscape you’ll be hurtling through once we’re up and running. We’ve used the Oculus Rift DK2 with native support. Once we’ve added some cunning opponents in the air and on the ground and a few tricky obstacles for you to smash your face into, then by jove we’ve got ourselves kickass gameplay to accompany our kickass concept! We’re developing a non-invasive story to run through the game that will both excite and intrigue you. We think cut-scene storytelling is lazy, so most of our narrative will take place in-game. You’ll be smashing missiles into the side of a tank when your mouth drops open at a stunningly clever plot twist. We will also be incorporating progress trackers and a HUD, but all of these features require time and money to complete.

We also need to throw some cash the way of our audio designers, testers, the story writer, and various other technical staff to make this game look and feel like it does in our heads. This game is going to be huge, and with everyone on board as passionate as I am it cannot fail. However without extra funding the release date will be delayed by quite some time, as everything is paid out of my own pocket, which contains lint, a leaky pen, some old potato chips and a limited supply of cash. It’s going to be a challenge getting it to the level that you and other gamers expect, but it’s one our team of programmers, designers, and sandwich artists are more than ready for. With your help, we can create a stunning virtual reality flight game that will raise the bar of what you can experience on the Oculus Rift. I could also use a few dollars to feed my cat, Joey. Don’t worry, I am feeding him. But he likes the finer things in life. And he does do the occasional bit of programming.

The bugs... they are few
The bugs... they are few

By Joey’s calculations, I need $30,000 to achieve the most important milestones for this game. Here are the other things I could do if I receive above and beyond my total.

In exchange for your support, enjoy these amazing rewards I've put together just for you!

Risks and challenges

Currently the biggest risk to finishing the game is being able to afford to continue paying the contractors I have. There are five at the moment, and they don’t come cheap.
Without Kickstarter, Volaticus will never reach its full potential and Joey will be stuck with boring old cat food rather than the Fancy Feast he craves.
