In Zanziar, dwarfs dedicate their lives to society. Everything is done for the communal good and dwarfs stoically sacrifice their time - and their lives - for others. Not all dwarfs are created equal though - some are honoured and valued for their greater contributions to dwarfkind.

In Dwarf, you will explore the halls and mineshafts of the mountain as you seek metals, with which to forge spectacular weapons and insignia. Other races are jealous of the dwarfs’ success, however, and you will also have to help protect the Mountain from these monstrous invaders.

Dwarf is a worker placement game played on a dynamic board - each turn sees two of nine available placements change randomly. This ensures that the game is far more tactical than other worker placement games and that every game of Dwarf is unique. 1-3 players can play a game of Dwarf using 1 copy of the game, lasting 30-40 minutes. Alternatively, up to five players can play a game by playing with two copies.

On your turn, you will place your workers to mine metals, defend the mines, or forge metals you have already mined into items. You will compete to accrue the most metal and items but this must be balanced against your responsibilities to society - enemies that are not defended against rob all players of resources. Defending against those enemies, instead of selfishly pursuing your own wealth, not only gives another route to victory but provides opportunities for powerful alternative moves in the game. Will you cooperate with your fellow players and seek glory on the battlefield? Or abandon society and hope the efforts of others protect your riches?

Dwarf has spent many years in development and has been available as a PnP game for much of that time. We're happy to let you know that you can still download an art-free version of the game, for free, from BGG. Thanks to this development time, the rules for the game are now well established and we can also provide you with  a preview of the print rulebook. Finally, if you want to try playing Dwarf before backing and you don't fancy the idea of PnP, you can also play the game using Tabletopia or Tabletop Simulator.

Stikfa-Mations has prepared the official rules video for Dwarf and done an excellent job. Note, however, that some changes were made to the rulebook which were too late to include in this video. Most notably, the resolution phase has now been streamlined. Where rules in this video and in the rulebook are different, the rulebook takes precedence.

We’ve heard that adding miniatures will make any Kickstarter campaign successful. We believe, however, that when we offer you a game it should be a complete experience and - further - we don’t believe in adding things just for the sake of it.

All of the stretch goals for Dwarf are material and aesthetic upgrades - such as more unique art for the cards. This means you can pledge on day one, knowing exactly what you’re going to get in the box. It also means that your pledge contributes to a more varied and exciting table-top presence for the game.

In the past, we’ve had social media goals, in addition to stretch goals. In theory, this is a great way to reward our backers for spreading the word about a game. In practice, it’s been difficult to track both the progress and the impact of social media activity. It’s also difficult to cost social media goals. We will not have any social media goals for Dwarf but we sincerely hope you still tell others about the game and its campaign - after all, the more people who pledge, the more regular stretch goals we unlock.

This Kickstarter is for the English version. The game uses symbols in such a way that there is no necessary in-game text. We will also run a Spieleschmiede campaign for a German version.

Production & fulfilment will be combined for these language  versions. If the Spieleschmiede campaign is successful, you WILL have  the chance to select the German version, instead of the English version,  if you back this KS campaign. At this time we do not have the resources to make Italian and Spanish versions but we aim to run separate crowdfunding campaigns for them in the future and are open to co-publishing arrangements for all other languages.

We aim to keep shipping costs to a minimum for you. For this reason we will dispatch all copies of Dwarf from our distribution centre in Germany, by regular post (without any tracking information). This may sound risky but we have now done this for three previous Kickstarter projects - Darwinning!, Perdition’s Mouth: Traitor Guard (both of which have shipped already) and Perdition’s Mouth: Cannibal’s Howl. Our experience suggests that very few problems have occurred and, where they have, it has been an easy issue to resolve with you - our fantastic backers. Tracked shipments are available as an option for an additional US$3-4.

The Dwarf box measures 25 × 148 × 210 mm and will fit through most letterboxes, ensuring that you do not need to be in to receive it.

If you add any other items in the pledge manager, they will be dispatched from our regional distribution centres in Germany, USA and Australia by a tracked service.

The world is changing rapidly and if previous Kickstarter campaigns have taught us anything it’s that shipping costs have become one of the harder aspects to accurately predict. For this reason, the shipping cost charged during the Kickstarter campaign is a best estimate made at the current time but final shipping charges will not be confirmed until closer to shipping. Please note that orders may be subject to top-up shipping fees before the pledge manager (Backerkit) is locked.

Yes, we are using BackerKit for gathering survey data after the project funding period. It will make your life, and ours, easier.

Risks and challenges

While nothing in life is without risk, this is neither our first game nor our first Kickstarter campaign, and we are confident in our ability to make a good job of it. Black Hat (2014), Perdition’s Mouth: Abyssal Rift (1st edition, 2015), PM:Traitor Guard (2017), Perdition’s Mouth: Abyssal Rift (revised edition, 2017) and Darwinning! (2018) have all shipped to backers, so are proof of our ability to deliver on our promises. PM: Cannibal’s Howl (2018) is on track to ship this October. We’ve been here before with similar products, we know what can be achieved and we are prepared for any hiccups in the process.

Component quality is very important to us, as owners of our other games can testify, but so is delivering value for money. The distribution will be handled by established partners with whom we work closely to ensure that all packaging and handling is done properly.

We are committed to ensuring that all of our backers receive their copies before the game reaches retail stores, and May 2020 is written in stone as the final deadline for availability. As breathing room, we’ve added two extra months to the production schedule to handle any unexpected delays, so there is a chance that deliveries will be earlier than announced. We know that this detail is of utmost importance to our backers and we’d rather deliver early than late!

Our team has earned a good reputation for being responsive on BGG and Kickstarter and we plan to keep that reputation intact. We are also aiming for total transparency during the production process. We intend to provide regular updates throughout the production process on tasks as they progress, including any delays or roadblocks that might come up.
