David Benedict has spent the past several years in a songwriting incubation chamber. On August 16, 2019, going under the artist name D. Benedict, the release of The Colors of a Cloud will be the first new recordings from David since 2010. D. Benedict previously released his debut album Ten-Thousand Miles under the moniker The Dump Trumpet. This new collection of songs brings the same indie, folk-rock sound as his previous release but it has matured and aged with his life experiences.
Here is an artist's statement from David:
"For me personally, The Colors of a Cloud is the artistic interpretation and processing of my own experience over the past 4 years or so. Such as life happens, it seemed to me that terrible things were happening all around me. I was unsure of how to process all these intense feelings that seemed to be occurring over and over, time and again.
Throughout my life I have always been involved in playing music, and with my time here in Seattle since 2011, music had not been a priority and was living on the back burner. I decided the best way for me to face all these intense feelings and emotions, was to turn back to music.
The approach of "The Colors of a Cloud" was meant to be one of personal introspection, an observance of the life experience. A means to realize and sort through all the death, tragedies and sorrow that we must ultimately face during our lives.
I started making this record with a bleak outlook on life and so many questions. Why must we have to face the loss of our loved ones? Why must there be so much hatred? So much pain?
This vision or approach would often get lost or forgotten in the day to day task of making a record, but after the final pieces of the puzzle had been put together, after standing back and viewing the project as whole and complete, I am amazed at the transformation of this vision and approach, and what I have learned about myself and about these experiences of life.
The entire process, journey and end result of the completed project ended up having a completely different outlook. I saw that from all the darkness, troubles and tragedy that we face, light exists. From this light can arise hope, life, art, peace and justice. From within the depths of the darkest cloud in the sky, exist every color of the rainbow. Perspective.
To have an opportunity to put this music and experience on a full length vinyl LP, is a dream come true, but for this we need your help to fully fund this project and release.
I am incredibly grateful for all the overwhelming support I have received from my family and friends on this project. I cannot say thank you enough, you all mean the world."
Making this record was an amazing experience and I hope you all enjoy. Thank you!"
To commemorate the return of D. Benedict's music, Nematode Records is putting together a special edition translucent blue swirl vinyl of The Colors of a Cloud. We are excited about this unique packaging for this release with album art by Leigh Buck that really accentuates the unique translucent vinyl color. This vinyl package will also include a limited, screen-printed postcard which makes use of some alternate unused album art, and draws visual inspiration from the lyrics. (See Below)
Stay tuned over the next 30 days as we have several bits of music and info about the album to share with you until August 16th!
Risks and challenges
There are very little risks to funding this campaign as we are running this as a pre-order initiative. This means the records are already manufactured and will be shipping to us around the beginning of August. Even if this Kickstarter fails to fund, we could still theoretically fill orders for all those who pre-order anyway.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
