A quick update - As part of their review process for the campaign's relaunch, Kickstarter has asked us to change the terms of our Designer's Oath; they want us to make sure backers who choose this add-on pledge the whole $ 320 now (instead of the $ 80 now + $ 240 later as we had initially planned).

We're still on track for a relaunch tomorrow (Tuesday March 12), early morning PST and look forward to seeing many of you back.

@Days of Wonder: "If we can't achieve this (or any other combination that gets us to this goal), then I'm afraid this would mean there is no real market for Small World on these platforms..."

I disagree. All that would say is that there's no market for paying $5 extra for three races and three powers. There could quite easily be a market for the game at $10, which you are not even testing, even apart from the fact that lots of people are not on Kickstarter or would only hear about the campaign after it's finished.

    11. Silvers.small

Creator Michael A Zuhlke on February 1, 2013

I would like to see the old $30 Halflings level (digital expansions: Cursed!, Grand Dames and Be Not Afraid) offered to all. That way you'll get money from iOS users as well as Android and Steam. If you don't, iOS users have no reason to pledge except to pay what amounts to an $80 down payment/reservation for the Deluxe Edition or to simply give their money to the cause helping others get what they want for their platform.

    13. Aluminum_lizard.small

Creator draziL on January 31, 2013

      Dear DoW

Along with the 6 player maps, are you planning to deliver any extra tokens that will be required? I am guessing that there will be more mountain regions both in SW and SWU. Moreover, extra forgotten tribes and monster tokens will be required.

    14. Test.small

Creator Days of Wonder on January 31, 2013

@Christopher, a new empty box won't happen - it would be too expensive to print in limited quantities and wouldn't sell at retail. As for the expansions, they will all be available as in-app purchases directly from within the game, once it ships.

    15. Missing_small

Creator Christopher Cole on January 31, 2013

What I wouldn't mind seeing as an add-on is a new box that would hold SW and expansions plus 6p map and or SWU and extras. Right now I have two large boxes a deck of cards and a small tray with all expansion the tokens/races/powers in it. I do like the levels and add-ons I have seen in the most recent update. Another thought on the recent update would be to have the digital expansions as add-ons too. Maybe have a $30 level that does not include digital game but comes with the digital races/powers and the six player maps. Then those of us that already own the iPad version can add $3.99 or whatever the price was per expansion that we have not purchased yet. This would ensure that the money I was planning to spend would help the project get that much closer to success.

My current thought would be as follows:
Digital races/powers and Six player cardboard maps - base pledge
Be Not Afraid digital expansion - add-on to pledge
Cursed digital expansion - add-on to pledge (for those who have not previously purchased this)
Dames digital expansion - add-on to pledge (for those who have not previously purchased this)
Cardboard versions of exclusive races/powers - add-on to pledge
New fan dangled box - add-on to pledge

Thanks. Feedback would be nice on these thoughts.

Assuming no one but Android and Steam users pledge for anything in this campaign (including the various add-ons which could be of interest to board game and iPad players of the game), and assuming Android tablet and Steam users only care to pledge at the $ 15 level, this campaign will fund if we can get 5,000 backers in each group (ie 5,000 Android users and 5,000 Steam users) to pledge in.

If we can't achieve this (or any other combination that gets us to this goal), then I'm afraid this would mean there is no real market for Small World on these platforms...

    17. Missing_small

Creator Zachary Appanaitis on January 31, 2013

I feel like this campaign is going to be tough to accomplish just based on supporters for the Android/Steam format. $150,000 is most likely not going to happen since so many of the fans use an iPad and have that app already. I think the best way for this to succeed is to get fans of the game to dig deeper in their pockets. And the best way for that is with the Designers Edition. But special edition games like that have one big flaw. Fans of the game that buy it but still want to incorporate the other expansions (or double map with Underground) are left with an awkward blend of high quality components and lesser (albeit good) quality components. So perhaps it would be best to offer more exclusive offers with the Designer Edition. I know I would pledge $500 if I could get even the Underground races and maps in the same quality as the designer edition. Or I'd feel much better about pledging more and getting the Designers Edition if I knew the other expansions would be available for purchase in the same quality at some point in time. I'd like to see this succeed but I think it's going to take those more tangible and exclusive perks to draw supporters in...

I'm with you on this one, Jeff. I'll be curious to see if the extremely vocal Android owners are willing to fund a project designed for them...I sure hope so, because the more people playing Small World, the better the development will be for the game overall.

Yeah, I think they just had lots of ideas and hadn't thought it all through.

For one thing they said they were going to ship at their own cost the print version of the 3 kickstarter races/powers for everyone $30 or more and seeing how postage has worked out for other projects who underestimated costs and the fact that $30 was the most popular tier they could easily have ran into troubles.

    25. Worker.small

Creator Rogue Marechal on January 26, 2013

I think we should not confuse everything... The reason why this campaign was canceled and rebooted is because it was trying to accomplish too many things at once. 190K was their estimate (right or wrong, justified or not) towards funding many physical goods as well as helping swallow the cost of the app development in the last year plus.

I'm not trying to defend DOW, I just think many of the comments I've read, before and during the campaign, often take only part of the picture into account, and reach skewed conclusions, some time in support and other times to accuse DOW.

Maybe I'm not better than anyone else on that aspect, but I think there are few conclusions we can draw from the first campaign, and personally while I think it was ill-conceived there was no attempt to con anyone. Well as long as we accept that DOW is in business and obviously they would have approached it with the expected research for profit when all numbers were added and subtracted...

    26. Missing_small

Creator AJ Harris on January 26, 2013

@Matt - This is only my assumption, but I'm guessing that they are just gonna take the hit financially to make up for the "confusion" of this kickstarter. It seems like they are trying to make the best of a situation that has WAY too much negativity in it, and are basically just apologizing. I could be wrong, but I find myself frequently gawking over the stability and integrity of Days of Wonder, not only in their board game designs, but in their customer care as well. Fans of DoW know that just recently they took another hit financially to reprint and ship out replacement cards for Mystery of the Abbey...so I feel justified in guessing that they are making the iPad update free just out of consideration for this canceled Kickstarter.

    27. Scv.small

Creator Matt on January 26, 2013

I found them buried like 40 posts deep in update 7.

Why something that important to every ipad owner is not made it's own update or posted in the general comment section is a mystery to me. Sorry for spreading false information it just didn't seem logical to me.

But wow that's mindblowingly awesome and a horrible realization at the same time....

DoW for the first time i'm actually very disappointed, and actually a little disgusted in you since my first purchase of your games and since i've basically done nothing but defended you since the beginning of this campaign. If you had the capital to launch the ipad 2 app with all the features for free from the start of this campaign why did you decide it was better to milk your customers for 190,000 dollars to do the same thing?!?!?

I mean really??!? I thought the entire purpose of this initial campaign was to launch a fully featured ipad app and you needed 190,000 dollars to justify that.

I mean i don't usually want to demand an answer to things but I need to know why this campaign can suddenly be made for free when you needed such a huge amount of capital 2 weeks ago. I believe us as your loyal fans and backers of this project deserve and answer. What exactly was the 190,000 going towards if not to fund the ability for you to develop and offer those things for free?

And that's posted where? it's not in the update number 7 it has not been posted on the main page. And i've followed these comments in this section since day 1 and read every single one of them. Not 1 has said they are giving ipad owners everything for free I mean whats the point of running a kickstarter that needed 190,000 dollars if they could simply afford to do that in the first place.

So please tell me where it is located, i don't doubt you i just don't see it anywhere.

Thanks Roger. It's amazing how many people still do not understand what's going on. Small World 2 for iPad IS coming later this year, IS free for existing owners, and IS going to be updated for multiplayer, online play (again, free for owners). It's been repeatedly stated by DoW. A little reading comprehension goes a long way, but with so much false information in the comments, anybody new is probably already lost.

    31. Worker.small

Creator Rogue Marechal on January 25, 2013

Matt that is simply not correct, can you please stop spreading incorrect infomation... If you don't know just say "I don't know" (repeat after me, in your own time). This is acopy paste from a comment DOW made:

' existing customers of Small World iPad will be able to upgrade to the new iPad version of Small World, which will include asynchronous online play and 3-5 player maps, at no cost when it ships. Be Not Afraid will be available as an IAP purchase, not unlike the current Cursed and Grand Dames expansions.
And when we relaunch the campaign, there will be a way for existing iPad players of Small World to acquire the new kickstarter bonus pack of new races and powers that Philippe has designed, even if you're not interested in any other aspect of the campaign relaunch.'

    32. Scv.small

Creator Matt on January 25, 2013

@ Mark M - i think you're a little off. They cancelled this project not because they decided to give everyone Small World 2 on the ipad for free. No right now Small World 2.0 will come out, if you own the game it will be upgraded for free, yes but you will have to pay for the 3 player map, 4 player map, and 5 player map. In addition to all the expansions and potentially online multiplayer.

That was what the 190,000 was for was to make multiplayer and all the versions of the map included in the base games purchase price the expansions would always cost money.

The new campaign will be about funding the android & steam version. I imagine their will be stretch goals to unlock the map content for free for all versions of the game to entice ipad users as well as reward tiers for the expansions and exclusive races & powers to get them to bid before the stretch goal is unlocked.

@DOW I pledged at Flames International level (initially a Halfling until you listened to our pleas for international shipping - thank you) for two main reasons - the primary being the Deluxe Edition and physical goodies, the second being the support for the app development. I don't own any form of tablet so the secondary reason was my "good karma" portion of my pledge.

I am very keen, as I am sure 99% of the current backers are, to see the new pledge levels in the reboot and would like you to know that you have not lost me as a backer. I myself didn't have any issues with the pledge levels of the current campaign so imagine how happy I will be when I see the better ones in the reboot! I would still like to see Small World 2 run as 1 Kickstarter rather than 2 (digital and physical seperate), are you in a postion yet to confirm if it will be 1 campaign or 2?

I know that you said you are working on making things better, I do urge caution though because I am sure that once the new pledge levels are announced us pledgers will be picking through them with a fine tooth comb comparing them to the previous levels. You thought people were moaning now, wait until they work out the new pledge levels are 0.00002% worse off than before! We are a picky bunch after all ;)

Anyway, you had $449 of my cash on your way, I'll be keen to see how much I end up parting with in the reboot. I am still super interested in the Deluxe Edition and Encyclopedia, and if the pc version is an option I will definately being adding funding for that too. Personally I am hoping there is a pledge level very similar to the current Flames one that kind of gave you the lot.

Best of luck with the next campaign :)

@Barrie Cotton I have to disagree with it being them looking like they are greedy because this project was well in way to being funded, in fact as far as I understand it's the opposite as they are going to provide the iPad updates free of charge (which this kickstarter was about funding) and then have the next one focused on having small worlds on other platforms.

I'm disappointed to hear that this campaign has been temporarily cancelled as I want my Designer's Edition ASAP, but am happy to hear that you'll re-launch soon.

Please provide more attention to the physical Designer's edition. I have MULTIPLE friends/colleagues that are interested in purchasing a physical, deluxe version of the game, but were confused by the description and seemingly lack of physical stretch rewards (incentives). I finally pledged at $321 simply due to having faith in DOW's spotless track record of providing quality games with exceptional components.

This time around, please provide more details on the deluxe game. Also, providing stretch rewards for the physical game (in addition to a better description) would have probably swayed several of my friends to back it at $321. I personally know of only 1 person that's interested in the video game. My other friends/acquaintances want the deluxe physical game only.

I'm looking forward to the re-launch as Smallworld is one of my top 10 games, and I own HUNDREDS :)

At best this appears to have been an ill conceived venture, at worse the organisers have seen how willing we were to push free cash your way and have now gotten greedy!

Game players are typically a pedantic bunch, no matter what you did D of W some gamers will moan! Should have stuck to your goals.

In the new release I think you need to introduce profit share for certain levels of contribution.

I wanted the designer edition game as it was going to be a rarity. If the new scheme suddenly makes the designer edition "common place" then, as they say on Dragons Den (google it if not sure) "Sorry, I'm out"

Ill add one comment about the a la carte requests. I say be careful with this. Having add on items is cool and adds a great way to boost pledge amounts. But if every item is a la carte then it will be hard for days of wonder to predict which items people are upping their pledge for. They only find out which extra items we are adding money for with the survey at the end. So not knowing how large a manufacturing run to complete for each item could cause the a la carte pricing to be much higher than if it is just tacked on to a full pledge tier.

Not don't get me wrong I would love to pick and choose everything I want like most everyone here but don't want to see crazy prices or everyone get upset again because they feel the value is off.
