Update #5

Giving Credit(s) Where Credit Is Due!

With 6 days to go, we've now reached our second stretch goal; Necromancer Island will definitively be coming back into print!

We know many of you would like to see us add some new stretch goals; unfortunately we have to balance this with some real constraints, namely:

- producing additional physical items such as storage trays, blank races & all, would stretch our own resources too much and risk impacting the things we have already committed too (new map, encyclopedia, Designer Edition...)

- adding new stretch goals to the digital game would automatically increase the work we have to do to deliver Small World 2, delaying the release of the game on all platforms

With our initial goal funded and 2 additional stretch goals reached already, our concern at this stage is more on making sure we deliver quality products for all we've promised, as opposed to running the numbers higher at the risk of biting off more than we can deliver. We're a small team, after all...

So while not real stretch goals per se (i.e. we do not expect, or even really want, anyone to increase their pledge for this to happen), we've decided to conclude this campaign by adding a series of mini-stretch goals of sort, most of which we should hit through the remaining few days of this campaign.

To give credit to you, our Small World 2 Backers, for each additional $ 10,000 in pledges we receive between now and the end of this campaign, we will be adding the names of some of our backers to the Credits section of Small World 2.

If we hit your pledge level (i.e. if you contributed at least this much $ to the campaign, regardless of whether through add-ons, shipping fees or standard rewards), we will list your name in all digital copies of the game!

You will be able to revel in glory and show all your friends - yes, even those you never manage to beat at Small World - how you were there on day 1 for us, as one of the founding dwarf fathers, mothers or whatever... of Small World 2!

And speaking of giving credits where it's due, now is the time for us to properly introduce the team that has been, and will continue to be spending many sleepless nights putting Small World 2 together!

      Designer's Oath Credits (Electronic version)
As per Update 5 will there be a section added in the credits specifically for Designer's Oath backers? Or is it there already and am I just blind?
Thank you for all the hard work! Launching my first game now!

@ Da Mayor - No. Just because the stretch goal was reached does not mean they will add a wooden version of these expansions to the Designer's Edition. If you pledged for the DE, you'll get a cardboard copy of the expansions since you are above $60, but it won't be made from wood and won't come 'in' the DE.

A lot of people complain about all the complaining. I just want to say that Days of Wonder is my favourite game company and I own all their big box games and love them all. I also think they have done a good job with this campaign.

      BUT!

I don't think there's anything wrong with BEGGING Days of Wonder for some more stretch goals and stuff. We all want lots of stuff of course :) And it seems Days of Wonder don't think it's possible because of price and delivery, but they could have stretch goals like "If we get to 300'000, people can add on 30$ to their pledge to get wooden versions of Leaders and Necromancer Island. These add-ons will be delivered 6 months after the initial release." And that way don't have to worry about money or delivery :) Or something along that line.

I also think that a problem with the 3rd stretch goal is:

I am a Designer Edition backer. At $270'000 I got my name in the credits. Being in the credits is much cooler when you are one of 400 than if you are one of 4000, so I kinda would like the pledging to stop before more people get their name in the credits. Not to be selfish or anything, but at least I wont pledge more to get other peoples names in the credit. This might not be a big problem, but I just thought I'd throw it out there :)

I'm stoked for this. I think I remember seeing a lot of different goals/rewards the first time I saw this. I like the new streamlined approach, to be honest. To everyone involved on the Days of Wonder side, I hope you don't let all the demands/complaints get to you; you're offering quite a lot, and I think the majority of people involved on our side are happy with what we can get.

That's all I've got to add to the discussion.

      I love this update.
My major concerns about adding new stretch goals, were their ability to deliever in time.
The more complex a projects get, the less chance it gets for finishing in time.
And lets' face it: To get your name on the credits list, is kinda cool, and it's not big time consumer implementing it for the developer as this is techincally probably a 1 hour job and with the extra money they could pay some kid to do the manual typing of names.

I already feel we're getting alot for our money, and demanding more at this point is kinda greed imho.

Remember they have to produce and add the cost of every new product for every new backer too!

OK, it seems that somehow the argument about this update has been lost in translation: you can't on the one end state that stretch goals won't happen because they'd spread the resources thin and then announce a half arsed line of micro milestones that will incrementally add complexity to the job of assembling something as non functionaly critical as a credit list.
DOW sure Think Different... well I'm convinced about 'different', not so about the 'think' part. Communication has been disastrous on this kickstarter, but I'm glad if the majority is happy how it was ran, more power to them!

    14. Missing_small

Creator Jake Fernandez on April 4, 2013

Also, I don't understand the hooplah over Stretch Goals. They should be considered as "nice-to-haves" rather than "requirements". As long as the developer successfully funds and delivers the original goal, then the KS is an astounding success. Backers should not come into a project expecting to get more than the original product. If you don't think the original pledge amounts are justified sans stretch goals, then don't back the project.

@Roger Marechal, the surveys I've seen for similar projects include an explicit question about how the backer wishes their name to appear in the credits. This question is separate from any relating to the delivery of the rewards.

What, pray tell, do you expect would happen if you backed this project and then entered "Anonymous" at that spot on the survey?

      *sigh*
I have been Extremely supportive in this Kickstarter and the last one. I have tried to advertise this to as many people as I can.
That said, this was a hugely disappointing update.
For weeks people have been proposing new stretch goals and DOW has been silent. Now that we've completed them they're willing to say there's nothing left... With a week left.
Maybe my issue is that I've pledged for games like Kingdom Death where communication was prioritized... In 6 days it would make $300,000.
There is no pressure to give us something everyone wants (neck I didn't want Leaders or N Island), but please give us a reason to keep funding and advertising for you.
I want SW to be as successful as possible, but I feel like this is Dow giving up.
I shouldn't care more about this game getting additional funding than they do. :(

    18. Sw2-group.small

Creator Jesse on April 4, 2013

@ everyone who wants to see Leaders and Necromancer Island as an add-on: think about what you're asking for here. You want to be able to add these on to your current pledge for a nominal amount. For ease of argument, let's say they let people add each expansion for $10. Now your pledge that had been at $25 goes up to $35...does this mean that now you qualify for a second (free) copy of Leaders? Or you want both, so your pledge of $45 goes up to $65...do you get a free set of each expansion? It just doesn't work or make sense for them to add them to the kickstarter as add-ons.

If you want the expansions, they are encouraging you to pledge higher with other items. If you don't want the other things, just be ready to sell them off once you get them.

@ people wanting to buy a second digital copy of the game: why would you want to pay extra $ now for the digital game when DoW has clearly said that it will be cheaper for you to buy it for the platform once it comes out? Why does it matter if you buy it now or later?

    19. Robotechglaug.small

Dunno, but I read a lot of negativity here...so I guess I'll chime in. I'm happy. I like the stretch goals, I like the Designer's Oath edition, I'm looking forward to SW2 coming out. Sure, more stretch goals would be cool, but I guess that's human nature to want more free stuff.

Honestly I have no real use for a 6 player map. Rarely play even 4 players. I really just wanted the 3 new races. (The Royal add on) And wanted the updated Leaders, and also Necromancer Island.

I have decided to buy the 6 player map. (Possibly as a resell). And in order to get to 60 bucks, im doing 2 packs of the Royal add on and not sure what to do with the other copy.

I do appreciate not throwing out more physical stretch goals. That way leads to unexpected funding shortfalls. But I do have to echo others in saying I would have wished for a way to buy a copy for a second platform. That would have allowed me to play it on my PC or on a tablet. And it would have had no impact on your costs.

    28. Ks_hazel.small

Creator Daisy Swaffer on April 4, 2013

I found this update a massive disappointment. I was really hoping that DoW would at least have decided to finally allow the items in the KS to be add-ons, namely the 6 player board and the encyclopedia.
I agree with the earlier posters as well, I would be happy to pay now for digital content that would be released at a later date than the main release and those were the kinds of stretch goals I was expecting from this campaign.
What an anti-climactic ending to a painfully slow kickstarter campaign.

    29. Sw2-group.small

Creator Jesse on April 4, 2013

@ Eric - First off, these are physical rewards only; they are not going to be digital. To get them you don't purchase the Stretch goals at all...they are a free gift. But to qualify for the gift, you have to have pledged at a certain level. To get both Stretch Goals, your final pledge (by the end of the whole kickstarter) needs to be at least $60. You can get to the total any way you want!

    30. Missing_small

Creator Eric on April 4, 2013

I feel like this is a foolish question, but are the stretch goals included at the Orc support level? I mean, do I get a physical copy of leaders as well as necromancer? Or is it just a digital copy? Or am I completely mistaken and it's something to purchase separately?

I, for one, and excited for me Designer's Edition and everything else I'll be getting with this, and I'm glad they aren't just promising the world to everyone with little stretch goals.

Great (I guess), The point though is that this stretch goals will have to have (significant) resources to be dedicated to, regardless of how this info is collated, and tremendous room for error that could open causes for ligitation by any number of individuals.

This update has just ensured that I will not pledge as the last thing I want is my name to be associated publicly with 'funding Smallworld 2', which this KS isn't.
On a sidenote, you complain that your conservatism with the stretch goals is ensuring you can deliver all that was promised, but the credits inclusion will require you to source a disclaimer or permission from every single backer that they are OK with you using their name as part of the product. You are in for very long nights doing this...

Necromancer Island is not going to happen on the digital game, because it would be way too much work for what it would bring. Leaders wouldn't be anywhere near as difficult, but there's a lot of other things we'd rather do first. We're not lacking ideas ;-)

Adding names to the credits is a cute idea, but what I would really like is to be able to pledge for multiple copies of the digital game. Let me increase my pledge in $15 increments in exchange for additional copies. I would love to hand out a copy as a gift to my circle of gaming friends. I also want to play both on my Android device and on Steam. I would much prefer to pledge for those copies now than to make a secondary purchase later. Any chance this could happen in the next six days?

    49. Missing_small

Creator Matthew Gibson on April 4, 2013

I know this will come off as a complaint or some sort of unnecessary criticism, but maybe the stretch goals could be simpler things that you're already making or have but in the digital world.

For example, including the various expansions/scenarios in digital form for varied levels of backing.

Maybe if the campaign reaches $260k, you could throw in the Cursed! races and powers; for $270k, Grand Dames; for $280k, Be Not Afraid; for $290k, Necro Island; for $300k, 6 player map expansions. In all honesty, I think these should have existed much earlier and at maybe lower levels to make them reachable by the community.

Delivering these types of rewards further incentivizes digital backers with digital rewards (though I'm in it for both digital and physical) but without the much harsher demands of delivering physical rewards.

Maybe I'm completely off base with my perception of the level of difficulty that delivering extra digital rewards would put on your team but I would guess it's not all that much.

In any case, there's still time and I think everyone would love it if we were able to get some more cool digital content to go along with our base rewards!

      Thank you!
