Update #4

Behemoths for Chocolate

By popular request, here's a sneak preview of the new Kickstarter backers Special Powers that will be released with Small World 2.

The Behemoths like mud just as much as we love our chocolate for Easter: Each Behemoth token is worth as many race tokens as the number of swamp regions controlled by its owner.

Aquatic does what you'd expect it to judging from its representation, and we'll keep the Fireball in the dark for now ;-)

Happy Easter everyone!

Why would you answer my question, Ryan? Was it your post? I suspect that it was a joke because the behemoths look super imbalanced especially with this shape of immune tokens.

No. Why would you think that?

Now was it an April's joke posted on the 31 of March???

@Da Mayor: or Behemoth White Ladies (always looking for mud to spoil their white dresses). Seriously though, this game was always a wee bit silly. I don't really mind and actually think it is one of the things that sets it apart from the competition.

BEHEMOTH HALFLINGS... This game may mysteriously become silly.

@Markus that would be neat. Everytime I look at those hippos I keep seeing those ballet hippos from that part in Disney's original Fantasia with the dancing hippos, ostriches, and crocodiles. Then I just laugh.

I'm relatively certain well get a new tray for the races. The spidering level will be designing new races. I'm certain a new mini expansion is being designed

Storage will be a problem, but I'm not going to worry about that until I get the new races, powers and board. Another board added to the box is really going to eat up a lot of space.

Where will we store the new races and special powers. My Be not afraid case will be all full.
Is there going to be a case that comes with it or will we see more updates with further storage trays?

my guess on fireball: you have to conquer a territory as normal (possibly teh fireball adds 1 to your total) but it kills EVERY token in the conquered region instead of just 1.

    12. Nt-crown.small

Creator Rick on March 31, 2013

My guess for fireball: Attacks a region for free but the region becomes scorched earth so it is worth less or no victory points for the rest of the game. And possibly +1 defense for that region. A good way to make a protective barrier around a race.

    13. Nt-crown.small

Creator Rick on March 31, 2013

The token shape is fine assuming they are immune to attacks. However, they need the red circle with a white bar on it to show immunity like the other races/powers that are immune.

The French power is called garou. The French for werewolf is loup-garou; 'loup' meaning wolf, while 'garou' is an old Frankish word that means man who turns into animal.

    15. Grom.small

Creator Jordan York on March 31, 2013

"Fireball throwing-" as a prefix sounds a little long winded in my opinion. I'd prefer something like "Pyromancer-" ... But the name doesn't really matter. Fireball is explanatory enough.

    16. Ossian.small

Creator Josh on March 31, 2013

I'm pretty sure it has its origins in the fact that the foreign-language (or original language, really) versions of the game have the adjectives as a suffix rather than a prefix, although I'm not sure what the French version of the "were-" power is called.

    17. Missing_small

      Creator Bruno G. on March 31, 2013

Maybe the odd use of the term Were was done on purpose. Brother Lupin in the Discworld novel 'Reaper Man' is a wolf who transforms into a human, although the book refers to him as a "wereman". Maybe it's just a reference to this in the same way the game has references to other fantasy works.

    18. Missing_small

Creator JeFF Stumpo on March 31, 2013

Along these lines, the Wallace and Gromit movie _Curse of the Were-Rabbit_ gets the etymology right. :-)

    19. Missing_small

Creator JeFF Stumpo on March 31, 2013

Jabooty_3, are you saying that in reference to Josh's point? "Were" is the Old English for "man." Translated into modern English, werewolf means man-wolf. So were-White Ladies would turn into humans. Were-Orcs would turn into humans.

    20. Sw.small

      Creator Jabooty_3 on March 31, 2013

That doesn't make sense. Werewolves are not wolves that turn into humans, it's the other way around.

    21. Ossian.small

Creator Josh on March 31, 2013

How do you know "Fireball" doesn't mean that the race is literally made of fire?
Either way, it can't be worse naming than the English power "Were-", which is the part that means Man. "Were-Humans" are Humans who turn into Humans when the moon is full.
Were-White Ladies are Ladies who turn into Men when the moon is full.

    24. Meeple.small

      Creator Mark E. on March 31, 2013

Shouldn't that Fireball power be called "Fireball Throwing". Because it makes more sense to have Fireball Throwing Ghouls, for example, than simply Fireball Ghouls. That's just my opinion.

Now I want blank race tokens even more.

    26. Sw2-group.small

Creator Jesse on March 31, 2013

@ Max - that's how I understood it as well. DoW is very careful about their design (one of the many things that makes their games so good) so I don't think the shape of the tokens is an accident or a mistake. We'll see when we get to hear more about the power, though.

    27. Missing_small

Creator Max Serfaty on March 31, 2013

I don't think the hippos are replacement tokens. Rather, you get the 2 behemoth tokens instantly, and at the beginning of your turn, those tokens are worth the number of swamps you control. So, for example, if you own 2 swamps at the time, the hippos will be worth 2 regular tokens, and you need to supply the rest to conquer the regions as needed. It says "is worth as many swamps you control." This doesn't, to me at least, imply replacement tokens.
And judging by the shapes, it's likely those conquered regions are immune. This is strictly my interpretation at least :)

    28. Image-241914-full.small

      Creator Chrisoc13 on March 31, 2013

Yeah from my reading of the Behemoth power shouldn't the token be more like a "hoards" token? Not immune but essentially a replacement for the regular token? The current shape will make the game more confusing as that has always meant immune in the past. Unless it still means that, then by all means.

    29. Missing_small

Creator Kristof on March 31, 2013

@Dean: it's different from fisher in that aquatic gives you a penalty for occupying non-coatal regions.

    30. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Daniel W. Johnson on March 31, 2013

These are powers rather than races. I suspect that the two Behemoth tokens work like the Dragon Master's Dragon token, aside from having a finite combat value.

    31. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Dean Gootee on March 31, 2013

So, Aquatic is just a strictly better version of fisher...

    32. Missing_small

Creator Kristof on March 31, 2013

I agree with Bruno Geerts and Jabooty: the design of the behemoth tokens is perhaps a bit confusing. Regarding the abilities themselves: they look really cool! I also believe the aquatic ability is actually ok despite its three tokens - it is somewhat similar to merchant (?) of the original version, which has just two tokens, but is more powerful. Curious to hear more about the fireball abilitiy!

Creator Jordan York on March 31, 2013

      Wow, that's awesome :D

    34. Missing_small

      Creator Bruno G. on March 31, 2013

Thanks for the update. Are the Behemoth tokens immune though? The shape of the token seems to indicate they are; but then why does the number of tokens they are worth matter? Hope the token design stays consistent with existing tokens.

    35. Sw2-group.small

Creator Jesse on March 31, 2013

Nice!! It's fun seeing what the upcoming powers are going to be! These look interesting and I can see why they will be easier to use in the digital version (like DoW said)...you'll really have to keep track of what you're doing with the Aquatic and Behemoth powers or you might play them wrong or forget something.

I like it! Keep the updates coming.

I'll agree it is a nice visual touch

Actually, the Fireball has caused its "wood" background to turn to charcoal. Kind of fun, actually, though it definitely may confuse people who mix their Small World and Underground tokens.
