∴Phantoms∴ will be Salt Circle Metals’ first official collection. The pieces are inspired by things that echo; phantom limbs, ghosts, memories, doppelgängers, haunted houses.
If you choose to back this Kickstarter, it is the realization of this collection that you will be supporting.
Pieces in the collection will be presented alongside writing by Naomi Washer, a Nonfiction MFA candidate at Columbia College Chicago and the editor-in-chief of the online journal Ghost Proposal. I have known Naomi for about thirteen years and some of the adventures we’ve had together have become deeply rooted and reverberate through our respective work.
a house in which
to live a house from which
i swarm[exquisite dream]
something curious: phantom
corners of the room [memory
haunts] white fingers tossed
into the air:
absorbed in you
I wanted the same thing.
Don't speak: you changed
Upon completion, the collection will include 18 pieces: a mix of pendants, rings and one pair of earrings. The pieces are cast in red bronze with a few in sterling silver. (Closer looks at these pieces will be posted individually in the "updates" section)
Salt Circle Metals
I strive to create objects that show the touch of a human hand. I am drawn to lost-wax casting because the process is intimate; each object has to be meticulously carved in wax before it can be replicated in metal.
In some magic cultures a salt circle is believed to form a sacred space, building a barrier between the self and any dark energy that is summoned. Pieces of jewelry often act as protectors in this same way: they have an unspoken power and their weight on the body changes the way we carry ourselves.
Each Salt Circle collection will be presented in parallel with pieces from a collaborating writer allowing the jewelry to act as talismans within to a larger mythology, and connecting the wearer to this narrative.
Art is what I use to interpret the world around me. I received my BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (through Tufts University) in 2011. In my "professional" life I am a learning facilitator - in 2012 I graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with my master’s in Community Art Education. I currently work with teens in alternative education programs in Portland, OR.
I started lost-wax casting in 2009, and carving quickly became a meditative process for me. I feel especially connected to jewelry as a medium because I believe the way we choose to adorn ourselves is closely tied to our identities.
Where the Money Will Go
1. Molds - in order for the pieces to be duplicated, I need to have molds made. It’s a tricky and therefore expensive process. This will be done through the same small, Portland design and production shop that does my casting, Studio Acorn.
2. Access to metalsmithing equipment - the funding will also allow me to get a membership at Shop People, in SE Portland, where I’ll have access to everything I need to do all required assembly and finishing.
3. Basic Materials - wax, tools, chemicals for patination, casting grain, etc.
Without these things ∴Phantoms∴ can’t exist. The money raised will also go toward the creation of the rewards!
*If I exceed my goal, the funding will go toward casting equipment (like a wax injector) to make my production process more self-sufficient.
I worked hard to make the rewards fun and related to the inspiration behind the ∴Phantoms∴ collection, so hopefully you will see something appealing!
There are eight pieces from the Phantoms collection available as rewards, as well as five pendants that were created specifically and exclusively for this campaign. The Phantoms pieces are all at a $10-$25 discount compared to how they'll be priced after this campaign, so it's a great chance to grab one!
Remember that I only receive any the funding if my full $4000 goal is reached, so any pledge amount is a good pledge amount!
You can find a more in-depth description of the rewards, along with photos, in this updates post.
Check out the "updates" tab for more photos of the collection and the rewards, plus plenty of backer-exclusive content (accessible with a pledge of any size) including animations, some of Naomi's writing for the collection, actual updates, and more!

Risks and challenges
If this campaign is successfully funded there should be no challenges, snags or setbacks! I feel confident that both the goals and timeline that I've set are reasonable.
The only thing that could potentially happen is an extended wait (by a couple weeks) on cast pieces if Studio Acorn becomes especially busy during the period when I'm preparing and sending out rewards. They're good about giving me estimated return times, so if this were to happen I would tell the backers who selected affected rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
