David Packer, a ceramic artist from New York, has been studying and researching Moroccan ceramics since 2011. The inspiration for this book was sparked during a yearlong stay in the Fez Medina, both as a Fulbright scholar and a working ceramic artist, Since then, he has expanded his research of Moroccan ceramics to include the country’s major ceramic sites, from the Rif mountains in the north to the edges of the Sahara in the south.

“The souks in the Medina are full of ceramics from Fez, but I also discovered a vast array of other vibrant styles of Moroccan ceramics, such as green desert glazes, slip cast white ware, modern brightly colored contemporary work. The range and variety of these less publicly-known ceramic styles was a testament to Morocco as a country with a diverse culture, shaped by so many different influences over many centuries. I passionately wanted to share this wide variety of Moroccan ceramics in an illustrated book in a broad and inclusive manner: all the regions, all the histories, all the different styles, something that has never been done in English before.

Postcard ($10) and the book, The Earth has Three Colors ($65)
Postcard ($10) and the book, The Earth has Three Colors ($65)

The Earth has Three Colors includes work from mountain villages with roots in prehistory, cast industrial ware from the Modern era and trendy design inspired by contemporary international taste in Marrakech.

“The book is divided into three sections, for the three kinds of clay used in Morocco, indigenous red, traditional grey and industrial white. It is lavishly illustrated, 12” high by 9” wide, hardcover and cloth bound with a dust jacket; there are over 250 photographs and six hand drawn maps by the author. It was written in two languages, English and French.

The focus of this campaign is of course the book, getting it our into the world. However, I am also offering a small curated selection of individual ceramics, representative of many which appear in the book. A full list of all the rewards can be found here.

“Contributing to this project will allow the book to be published and distributed, bringing to light this fascinating component of Moroccan culture. This project has been a long journey and I look forward to sharing this with all of you soon: I plan to deliver this book and the other rewards in September.

“The book has been edited, it has been translated, it has been designed, and the printer is waiting – it is ready for you and the world!"

Risks and challenges

There is always a risk when you create anything, especially with a project that is so public. What happens if no one wants the book? What happens if I do not get funded? I will just do what I always do, work hard and then work harder.
Thanks.
