About this project
Little Magic Books is a new twist on the Classic Children’s picture book. Little Magic Books combines the physicality of the printed book with the interactivity of smartphone apps.
As a smartphone app developer, I appreciate how a well-designed smartphone or tablet app can bring a story to life. But as a new father, I know that nothing can replace the special experience of reading a physical book with your child.
So, I set out to design a printed book for the Digital Native - a book that your tech-savvy toddlers and kids will love.
Little Magic Books is built around a simple design concept that leads to some pretty amazing results.
The reader straps any smartphone into a false bottom built into the back of the Little Magic Book. The smartphone screen shows through cut-outs on each page, while the app animations integrate seamlessly with the illustrations and storyline.
Little Magic Books works with any smartphone! A dual elastic strap secures both iPhones & Androids, regardless of device or screen size.
You can think of the Little Magic Books app as "the brains of the book". The App’s main interface is simple and easy to use: you can launch into your favorite book in less than three clicks!
The app is designed as a Multi-Book Platform and will eventually support a wide selection of Little Magic Books through easily downloadable content packs. When a new print title is released, your digital "bookshelf" will be updated with the corresponding animations, and you can even order new titles directly from the app!
“If You Owned a Zoo” takes kids on a tour of a zoo filled with friendly animals. Along the way, kids can feed a lion, dance with a penguin, tickle a giraffe and interact with a whole cast of other goofy creatures.
The story is written in two part rhyme, making it easy for kids and parents to read along together. The interactivity of the app gets kids excited to read!
“If You Owned a Zoo” is only the first book in the series. We are excited to apply the Little Magic Book design to stories of world travel, underwater adventures, space odysseys. The sky is the limit!
Designing the book and developing the app has been my passion project for the past year, consuming my nights and weekends. I was on a race to complete the first prototype before my own son began reading!
We have now completed a final prototype of “If You Owned a Zoo”. The pages are illustrated, the prototype is printed, and the App is developed.
Now, we need Kickstarter’s help!
Backers’ support will be rewarded with the first-ever set of hybrid print & smartphone app-powered books! We'll be able to move forward with our first production run of “If You Owned a Zoo”, and get the book out and into kids’ and parents’ hands.
Support from Kickstarter backers will also allow us to begin developing the next two books in the series - “Knock, Knock, Who’s On My Block”, and “Treasure Down Below!”. Backers will also be the first to hear about these developments!

I'm a designer, a producer, and an inventor who loves coming up with new creative ideas. Over the last 13 years, I've built a career developing hundreds of digital games that when combined have generated over four billion game plays. I've created titles for everything from Nintendo & Sony consoles, to a wide range of online interactive branded games for companies like Disney, Showtime, Kraft Foods, Wrigley, Starz Media, Burger King, Ubisoft, and others.
I'm excited to bring my experience of the digital mobile space to traditional publishing!

How Kickstarter works.
The following is taken from Kickstarter's info page.
Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others.
Thousands of creative projects are funding on Kickstarter at any given moment. Each project is independently created and crafted by the person behind it. The filmmakers, musicians, artists, and designers you see on Kickstarter have complete control and responsibility over their projects. They spend weeks building their project pages, shooting their videos, and brainstorming what rewards to offer backers. When they're ready, creators launch their project and share it with their community.
Every project creator sets their project's funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers' credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.
Backing a project is more than just giving someone money, it's supporting their dream to create something that they want to see exist in the world.
Risks and challenges
I have been designing, producing, and delivering interactive products for the past 13 years. I've been hard at work on this project for over a year and most of the heavy lifting has already been completed. What I mostly need now is monetary support to help me get started on mass production.
As with every new project there is always the risk of production delay or changes. I will do everything I can to mitigate these risks and if delays or changes happen, I will be sure to keep everyone updated through updates on the Kickstarter page.
Thank you so much for taking the time to learn more about my project. Your support would truly be greatly appreciated.
