Hello! We are The Gray Havens, a husband and wife pop-folk duo from Chicagoland.
If you didn't get a chance to watch our U-Stream concert, you can stream the whole thing below!
After releasing our first EP this past January, we were blown away by the level of support and encouragement we received from listeners. We have made many new friends, played lots of live shows, and received lots of emails about when the next album will be made....
SO, we are excited to announce we will begin working on our first ever full-length album this fall!, produced by the very talented Mitch Dane at Sputnik Sound in Nashville.
Right now, the plan is to record 10 songs, perhaps more. A few working song titles are:
- Far Kingdom
- Fire and Stone (we're thinking of using this for the album title!)
- Jack and Jill, pt.2
- The Painter
- Music, They Call Me
- Songs in the Night
Most of the songs have been written very recently, though a few older ones will make an appearance as well, which we've been saving until now. Some lyrics are written in narrative form, similar to our last EP, but many (like Far Kingdom) speak in the first person, which is sort of new for us. We loved writing and recording songs from our last EP, but we couldn't be more excited to experiment with new sounds and arrangements, as well as give more spotlight to Licia's awesome vocals. In short, we couldn't be more excited to record...
This is the scary part.
Including studio time, a producer, an engineer, musicians, mixing, mastering, art design, & manufacturing, we will need $29,000 to complete the project. After that, we are hoping to invest an additional $4,000 into publicity, totaling at least $33,000.
That said, we are setting our Kickstarter goal at $25,000. We know this still sounds like a HUGE amount, and it is, but we are hoping to create an album worth the cost and worth the efforts of the many (we hope!) who will become a part of it together with us!
Take a look on the scroll bar to the right to check out our rewards packages. Hopefully you will find one you like, become a backer, and join us in this exciting adventure!
For those interested, here is a more detailed breakdown of where exactly all the money will be spent:

Become a backer!
If we reach our goal by October 5th, the project will be funded, and you will get your cool stuff! (Hooray!) If we do not reach our goal, you will not be charged, and we will not be able to create any cool stuff to send you.
That said, we're hopeful, excited, and cannot wait to see how the next few months will unfold in making this next album!
Thanks so much for checking out our Kickstarter. We hope you become a backer and share in this adventure together with us!
Ps. Tonight (Thursday, Sept. 5th) is our Kickstarter Kickoff Concert! Come join us as we sing new songs from the upcoming album! Click here to tune in.
Risks and challenges
A potential risk is that recording could take longer than our original goal, thus delaying our delivery dates for backer rewards.
We also risk running into unexpected costs that could pop up (which would also delay things a bit). Hopefully this doesn't happen, but we ran into this during the production of our first EP, and ended up spending thousands out-of-pocket that we did not anticipate. Yikes!
It will certainly be challenging to keep everything organized, from backer info, sending out surveys, shipping, personalization, etc..., though Licia's mom is super organized and will probably help us out (she virtually planned our wedding).
The main risk is that we don't get fully funded. If that happens, we'll get creative with trying a different approach. We could always independently fund the album (which would basically turn into a Kickstarter without Kickstarter's help) or seek a label (which we are really hoping to avoid for now). We're committed to making this next album, so if it needs to happen by pursuing another route, that's ok with us.
We hope you love the next album regardless whenever and however it comes about. Cheers!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
