In May 2016, my next CD, "Spinoza's Dream" will be released.
If you follow a dream, you can reach the stars. The new CD "Spinoza’s Dream“ is actually my dream coming true; a philosophically themed collection of new song, featuring fantastic musicians, all of whom played on some of Al Stewart’s classic albums. The CD was recorded by a Grammy-award winning producer, Martin Levan, in Wales/UK. With your help this special album can reach a wider audience.
What is this all about?
As an independent musician I have to do all the things a label would do. So far I have been able to do most of that. My early recordings were self-funded and sold at gigs and online to my fanbase. This project has the potential to reach a larger audience and could help build my following – the key will be promotion. Labels often spend as much promoting an album as they did to create it! I probably won’t be doing that, but would like to have some marketing budget to give this one a chance.
This Kickstarter campaign is only 30 days long, and some of the rewards are limited in number, so will go to the first people who claim them. When we started this campaign, we set a goal of $10,000 to make sure we reached it. I was blown away to receive that and more in under 24 hours. We are now aiming for a stretch goal of $20,000. All donations count!
What's been paid for so far?
Here are most of the items that were covered by our original budget (which was just designed to get the recording done).
Catering for musicians and “crew”
Additional engineering for remote recording
Here are the items that were not in our original budget, but which are going to be necessary for this CD to be successfully released.
by Colin Elgie, who designed the cover of Year of the Cat!
Duplication and printing of the CD's so we can have physical copies
Shipping of the actual CD's once they are made
Publicity campaign (hiring a publicist or possibly two, for a minimum of three months)
This one has a story!
To get the media interested in an album, there usually has to be a story, or something more than just a good collection of songs. “Spinoza’s Dream” has several stories, and they tie into the somewhat unusual story of my life and career. To put it briefly, “former philosophy teacher and Al Stewart fanatic makes a philosophically themed CD with the musicians that he grew up listening to.”
Here are the three main threads to the story:
Philosophical theme (it's almost a concept album)
The musicians (and the connection to Al Stewart and the Royal Albert Hall)
The producer (Martin Levan and his amazing history, for info see www.martinlevan.com)
So how did this come to be?

Why should you get involved?
Join this campaign to get a copy of the album before anyone else. You should receive it in March if not before! And you can know that by doing so you help to get this CD out and publicized. Join for the cool rewards and rare items (see list), and join to be part of a team and growing community of friends and fans who keep me making music.
When will it be ready?
We are hoping for a release date of May 2016, but expect that backers of this project will be able to receive a copy by late March if not before!
Risks and challenges
Because we are mounting a publicity campaign, there is always the possibility that even with a great publicist who has wonderful connections, the media may not take an interest in the project. It is simply impossible for any publicist or PR firm to guarantee results. It is also possible that even if the media picks up the story and broadcasts it to a wider audience, that wider public may not take an interest in the story or the music. We plan to use a multi-tiered approach, aiming high, but being prepared to fall back on smaller media outlets if the larger ones don't work out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
