WHAT IS GACHA GACHA?

Gacha Gacha is a gooey, disgusting short film from the makers of Cat Sick Blues. Shot in Japan... in Japanese... with a Japanese cast... Japanese locations... and a repulsive, stop-frame animated tanuki! We are ridiculously excited about this film.

Gacha Gacha is about the nightmare of obsession and the short-lived highs of being a collector. That nagging desperation to possess rare things, and how quickly that desperation fades.

We follow a woman, living alone in a tiny apartment surrounded by an enormous collection of Gacha capsule toys. She gets news of an upcoming Gacha of incredible scarcity. She rushes to her local Gacha shop, and, impossibly enough, that ultra-rare Gacha ends up tumbling out of the machine.

A typical Gacha toy.
A typical Gacha toy.

Inside the Gacha ball is something truly odd though. A slimy, potentially living (but just barely) thing slides out. A disgusting, goo-smeared tanuki enters her life.

Deiter's handiwork!
Deiter's handiwork!

Gacha Gacha is not quite a horror film, but it does feature some pretty horrific elements. Prop maker and creature designer, Deiter Barry, has put together a horrific little tanuki creature for the film. It will be stop-frame animated and its slime-drenched, sickening exterior should be a nice treat for fans of practical effects!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF US

Formed in 2012 to launch the release of the short film version of Cat Sick Blues, Phantasmes Video has its roots firmly wedged in the weird.

In 2016, Phantasmes Video released Cat Sick Blues, their first feature-length film. Cat Sick Blues has played at festivals worldwide picking up praise, awards and angry hate-mail along the way. It is available on DVD and blu-ray from Monster Pictures in Australia and will soon be making its American home video debut.

In 2017, Phantasmes Video moved from its Australian home to Osaka, Japan, where director Dave Jackson has started the slow return to filmmaking. In late 2017, he put together a music video for local Osaka band Kawachi Reds.

The music video was made with Daniel Cowan (a prominent crewmember on Cat Sick Blues) on camera and digital effects, and Cat Sick producer Taena Hoshi overseeing the production.

Dave is now keen to move onto shooting short films and, hopefully, a feature shot entirely in Japan (piiiiipe dreeeeeam).

OUR BUDGET

The budget of this film will be a combination of Kickstarter raised funds and our personal investment. Your much appreciated money will go towards…

Props and art direction…  The brilliant Deiter Barry (more on Deiter bellow) has already made us a detailed, disgusting sculpt of the aforementioned gross tanuki. But there are many other props to be created and purchased. We need to turn the apartment location into a collector's den, so every bit of furnishing is important to get the right idea across.

Camera and lighting equipment… As we discovered shooting the music video, equipment hire is not cheap in Japan. Decent equipment doesn't necessarily make a film, but we want this short to look really nice—well, we want it to look gross, but nice too.

A reliable cast… Despite its relatively short production time, it’s important to have performers that are committed to this film.

Locations… Osaka is filled with amazing locations, and we want to make sure we are able to get permission to shoot in the grimiest ones we can find! Japan can be intense when it comes to getting permissions, so money in this department would help us enormously.

Crew... Though many people who work on this will do it out of the goodness of their heart, some roles require payment if this film is to look and sound as good as we want it to.

Catering... No, really. It's important.

OUR TIMELINE

We are currently deep in pre-production. Deiter has completed the tanuki, the script is being polished, and actors and locations are being sought.

The shoot itself will take place over three days in early May or mid May, with post-production kicking in shortly after.

Like we did with Cat Sick Blues, we are giving ourselves some extra time to finish up the potentially lengthy post-production process. We plan to have the film all up in Kickstarter supporters’ faces by late July and physical rewards sent out in August.

Kickstarter supporters will, of course, be able to see the film before it plays at any festivals.

STRETCH GOALS

275,000 yen (approximately $3300 AUD or $2600 USD) is not a hell of a lot to play with. It’s a barebones budget. That means this wil be an intense and tight shoot with limited equipment. We’re used to low budgets, but having more money would mean the world to us. Each stretch goal unlocks a special treat for all Kickstarter supporters.

If we reach ¥350,00, this means…

- We can extend our shooting schedule by a day, which would be a huge deal for us.

This stretch goal unlocks...
- An outrageous tanuki themed desktop background.

If we reach ¥400,000, this means…
- We can definitely extend our shooting schedule by a day.
- We’ll be able to hire more equipment that will make our life way easier.

This stretch goal unlocks...
- A digital (but printable) disgusting tanuki Christmas card designed by Matthew Revert.

If we reach ¥600,000, this means…
- WOW!
- We can definitely extend our shooting schedule by a day.
- We’ll be able to hire more equipment.
- We can secure music rights for songs that we’re keen to use (but realistically can’t afford with our original target).

This stretch goal unlocks...
- We'll announce what this unlocks if we start to get close to the stretch goal (ie: we have no idea yet)!

REWARDS

We want to make sure that each step up is a genuine step up in quality of reward. From the 1000 yen goal upwards, we want to make sure everyone can see the film in an excellent, high quality download and have a streaming option too.

Please don't be scared off by the spooky yen prices! Kickstarter shows an approximate estimate of the reward cost in your own currency and we'll place our own estimates below. Please note, these are based on exchange rates that go up and down regularly, so it's NOT an exact amount.

MEET THE CREW

Dave is an award-winning filmmaker whose work has screened at international festivals. He has directed and written several short films, music videos, TV comedy, and the feature film Cat Sick Blues, a Kickstarter funded project. Previously based in Melbourne, Australia, Dave now lives in Osaka where he continues to make oddball work.

Taena is an interior designer currently working in Osaka. When she is not helping her clients create beautiful spaces, you can find her producing music videos, short films and feature films. Taena was heavily involved in the production of Cat Sick Blues. She not only produced the film, but was also on set almost every day as First A.D., art director and an endless list of other roles!

Deiter Barry is a Melbourne based artist who specializes in bringing imagination to life. Over the years he has worked with many talented artists and directors around Australia on films, commercials, in theater and for haunted attractions. He has also had the pleasure of creating wearable puppets for the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Museum. During his experience, he has gained a wide knowledge in working with a variety of mediums and materials including resins, polyurethanes, silicones, latex and of late, has branched out onto the field of foam latex prosthetics, body casting and special effects makeup. Making the bizarre, wonderful and at times gruesome images that he and his clients hold in their imaginations, is not just a job for him but his passion. It’s this passion that will drive him for many years to come to keep doing what he does, and that is, The art of bringing imagination to life. deiterbarrycreations.com

Matthew Revert is a writer, musician and graphic artist from Melbourne, Australia. His latest novel 'Human Trees' was recently released by Broken River Books and his latest LP 'Being Small' was recently released by Kye Records. Risks and challenges

Making a film is pretty tough. Making a film in a country where you can’t speak the language is really tough. Communication takes longer, which means filming takes longer. However, we have a Japanese speaker as our producer and First A.D. and we see this more as an exciting challenge. This is an opportunity to get special performances that we couldn’t get back home.

Locations are also a tough one. Japan has strict rules about filming. Again, we’re lucky that we have a native speaker at our disposal to tackle these difficulties.

Having a low budget is always rough, but we’ve been dealing with low budgets for over a decade. A low budget is merely an incentive to think more creatively. Big budgets can sometimes zap a film of its inventiveness.

Then there's delivering Kickstarter rewards. This is a big task, but we've done it before on a much, much bigger scale with Cat Sick Blues and we can most certainly do it again!

We anticipate this shoot with a hint of terror, but where would the fun be without that?
