Three decades ago, many of us were able to experience the thrill of buying what was likely our first role-playing game. Back then, the games often came in a beautifully covered box set. The mysteries contained within were everything we needed to play in a world of fantastical creatures and powerful warriors.
The Spanish game "Aventuras en La Marca del Este" began from the mind of Pedro Gil as a homebrew campaign for some friends in Spain playing the world's most famous game as devised in Frank Mentzer’s (BECMI) Red Box with 9 starter classes and new rules on mounted combat, aerial combat, seafaring and ship battles. Now, many years later, it is one of the most popular role-playing games in Spain. By enlisting incredible artists that are now rising stars in the RPG industry such as A.J. Manzanedo, Jorge Carrero and Víctor Guerra, the "La Marca" team produced an incredibly captivating "retroclone" role-playing game that is an old school experience wrapped in old world flare. The game is published in Spain by Holocubierta Ediciones.
To see more of what this product line already contains in the Spanish game, please check out the original blog, Aventuras en La Marca del Este (en Español), and the community driven Codex de La Marca (en Español).
The Codex of the East Mark serves as an online structured setting that consists of both official content and fan based content. Since community has played a huge role in the creation of this RPG it makes sense to continue growing the setting by including community content. If there is significant response to this project, it is highly likely that an English version of the Codex will be built.
The medieval world of Adventures in the East Mark is a place where magic and the extraordinary are present, albeit, not in evident way to the majority of its inhabitants. In reality only the most gifted, the brave and intelligent and determined adventurers come face to face with this reality while common mortals simply try to survive, put a roof over their heads, work and sustain a family. Adventures in the East Mark is faithful to the canons that define the swords & sorcery genre, given the technological and social components of the civilization described, and the supernatural elements permeating the whole, are only perceivable to a small minority of its inhabitants (the adventurers). It is also true that there are elements of high fantasy in the setting. We could say that Adventures in the East Mark stands at the crossroads of classic swords & sorcery and high fantasy.
Valion is the most important continent in our world. It is home to some of the most representative countries of the setting. Nations such as Esmeril (the Kingdom of Elves), and the Forest Kingdom ( where the East Mark is located that constitutes the eastern frontier of this old and proud human kingdom), Ungoloz and Visirtan. There are two other important landmasses, Cirinea and the Lost Continent or Ziyarid in Dormunder language. The vast oceans that occupy almost two thirds of the world, with hundreds of small scattered islands from the Meridion Ocean, to the south, until the Coral Sea, to the east, where the sailors of Kang are the lords of the waves and the hills. Prominent are the Pirate Islands, in the Sea of the Dragon, home of buccaneers, filibusters and delinquents that look for a place that is far away from the cruel and implacable arm of justice.
UPDATE: Now this project includes an exclusive add-on the Blue Book, a full 248 pages of an immersive setting. Read on to see what this means and how this Kickstarter is bringing both a complete set of rules and a complete setting to start playing upon funding!
Now Pedro Gil, the lead creator of the game, has given his blessing for us to bring this game to the U.S. for the first time ever. We have gotten Tony Reyes, second lead designer and contributing author on the Secret Fire project, to translate the first box set, The Red Box, into English for the first time. Tony has been working hard to maintain the old world voice that was a well-loved characteristic of the original game and he is already over 70% complete in his translation. Also on our team is John Adamus, editor-at-large and "The Writer Next Door", who has previously worked on Fate Core, Marvel Heroic Roleplaying and Becoming.
The Red Box includes everything you need to play the game and so much more:
- The approximately 120 page perfect bound rule book with full color cover and B&W Interior (Collectors edition includes full color interior). In this book, you will find the complete game (Compatible under the Open Gaming License with the Basic Edition of the world’s most popular fantasy role playing game); a bestiary; an introduction to the fantastic East Mark setting; and two adventures to get you started. (8.3" x 10.3")
- A card stock GM’s screen
- A set of opaque crimson red Game Science Dice (un-inked) & white crayon
- A pencil with the Adventures in the East Mark logo
- All encased in a full color box that is sure to stand out on your shelves (11.5" x 11.5" x 1.6")
See some examples of the nine classes included.
Also, we have something that will make this Red Box something truly unique. Frank Mentzer himself, the man behind the Red Box (that sold millions of boxes in 11 different languages all over the world), has offered to write a new introduction for the English edition of the Red Book.
Huge Add-on: BETA access to the Blue Box Campaign Setting Guide PDF
The Campaign Setting Guide, the book in the Blue Box set that we revealed in Update #15 that we are adding BETA access to, is filled with loads of stuff that make up the setting for Adventures in the East Mark.
The East Mark is actually a tiny portion of a huge world. Three continents, Valion, Cirinea and Ziyarid, dubbed "The Lost Continent", are thoroughly explained, including main realms, tribes and cities. The blue book includes both inspirational and crunchy material and it includes two heavy-setting adventures to get you started.
It is by all means the perfect companion to the Red Box. If you want to know more about this superb add-on, check Update #15.
The Moor by Pedro Gil
The exclusive adventure is centered around two “simple” errands ran by the adventurers for the Burgomaster in Robleda. These errands will take them to the swamps, where they will come face to face with an ancient witch, up to a village in the midst of a battle. In the style of all the classic modules, the adventurers will be able to explore the swamps, the forest and the mysterious mounds filled with ancient secrets.
Our plan is for this to be just the first product in the launch of the entire product line here. Future sets will include: the Blue Box, concentrating on the campaign setting; the Green Box, containing the advanced rules and even more character choices; and the just about to be released Black Box, containing the culmination of the overall campaign known as “The Call of the Gods”. With successful translations of those products, we may open the gates to even more products to further fill in the world for you to explore.

We hope that you will join us on this journey as we seek to bring this successful role playing game product line to the U.S. and the English language for the first time.
Risks and challenges
The team behind "Aventuras en La Marca del Este" has successfully produced an entire line of games in their native Spain. This Kickstarter campaign will merely provide funding for high-quality English translations, keeping the old language flavor of the game and produce the initial print run of the products funded. The goal is to prove there is a market for this game in the US.
Our plan has been to have the Rulebook over 70% completed before the launch of this campaign and we're right on track so that we can deliver this product on time.
Adventures in the East Mark was originally published in Spain by
Holocubierta Ediciones, the guys responsible for bringing Yggdrasil,
Z-Corps and Tenga RPGs to Spain and supporting local authors to create
Omertá RPG as well.
Absolutely not- this set includes the complete rules needed to play the game.
Since we are producing the Color version, exclusive to the US market if we are funded, there is no reason not to make the PDF the Color version. We'd be ludicrous not to!
Well, to be honest it is because we are so eager to get this product in your hands. We're already over 70% translated, so nothing would make us happier than get to work on getting these materials printed as soon as possible. As a young company, it is our singular goal to deliver a high quality product to you on time as promised and not get distracted by too many options that we can't deliver on.
Well, the simple truth is that we are so passionate about this game and getting people to play it, we are not seeking profit from it. We just want to bring the game to the US. With $30 we are able to get a very good quality product, ship it with US and leave us with zero profit and that's OK; this is just the start, not a business-oriented KS.
