About this project
Writer's Block takes on the playful guise of a giant scrunched-up paper ball. It's a unique blend of form and materials that captures the ups and downs of the creative process.
No, it's a thing! The geometry of crumpled paper is so inherently strong and complex, it has physicists and supercomputers baffled. Writers Block enhances this form using a combination of finishes, bio-resins and 11 secret herbs and spices, capped off with toughened glass.
It's lightweight, strong and ready to handle all your coffee table needs. Plus it looks pretty schmick.
The Dumas is inspired by text from the "The Three Musketeers" (1844), by Alexandre Dumas. It's a favourite of ours and a nod to the country we currently call home.
The Mercury captures the score of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (1975), because I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me.
The Oberkampf was one of those rare finds that presented itself. It's created from a giant advertising banner that was being discarded after display in the iconic Oberkampf district of Paris. It's so large we could create two tables from it! The vibrant colours and unique material means this will be manufactured differently to the other designs, but will look amazing. It's truly an authentic, one-of-a-kind Parisienne piece. That we'll make two of.
While we're on the subject, if you choose the Base Only reward, you'll receive a Writers Block base of your choice, without the attached glass.
Maybe you already have a glass or table-top ready to go. Maybe you'll add a cushion and use it as a foot stool. Maybe you'll buy two bases and make a long bench. It's all good. Your base, your rules.
Tops are made from toughened glass, available in square or round.
The complexity of the shape and hand-scrunching process means every base will have a slightly different height. We'll make sure they land in the 40-45cm (16-18 in.) range.
If we hit our Stretch Goal we'll unlock the option of personalised bases for all backers. It could be text from your favourite novel, your favourite song, or any other black-and-white artwork (book covers anyone?). We're currently exploring the option of using coloured art, and will make a final decision when we're closer to this goal.
We figured some of you might be digging the Writers Block design, but aren't in the market for a coffee table right now. If that's you, we've got you covered.
The Writers Block pendant is the perfect way to get a pint-sized scrunched-up paper fix. It'll be hand-made with love in exactly the same way as the Writers Block tables. Best of all, these will be fully customisable with any design you want, colours included.
Making and especially shipping furniture isn't cheap. If we reach our goal of €2500, over 80% of the funds will go toward material and shipping costs, plus KS fees. The remaining funds will be a start toward developing the rest of the Dash Lucky line. Anything beyond €2500 will go a long way to helping us on that road, so if we've piqued your interest and you're keen to see the other ideas brewing then this the perfect chance to jump on board!
Risks and challenges
Any project has inherent risks and challenge associated with it, so we've spent a lot of time thinking of the most reliable way to carry out these orders, across the board.
All raw materials for the tables are sourced locally in and around Paris, with suppliers that we've frequented often. Each table will be hand-made, so there'll be no waiting on third-parties to get things rolling, pun intended.
As awesome as it would be to get thousands of orders, we're not quite set up yet to handle that. So reward quantities have been limited to make sure we can deliver what we promise, on time.
The biggest challenge has been working out the best way to package and ship these bad boys, such that the glass top and base remain in mint-condition when they arrive to you. We've developed our own custom packaging inserts and boxes, based heavily on the way the glass suppliers provide us with the glass tops. The cost of the packaging materials has been factored into the budget as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
